But as far as prices are concerned it's usually one of the cheaper offerings in Bolton (although Tesco often match the price and their loyalty scheme is better). The good value doesn't extend to the confectionery, however which is, as always seems to be the case for petrol stations, horrendously over-priced.

The shop holds most items routinely required while on the road and the fuel seems no dearer than elsewhere. At the present time, there are roadworks making all of this stretch of Winwick Road difficult to access, but it is still possible to have up to eight vehicles refuelling at the same time. They often have special offers on chocolates, crisps or novelty and useful items (de-icer last week!) and I would recommend anyone using them regularly to ask for a Shell Driver's Card as the benefits mount up over time.

The store is open 24/7 as you'd expect, they have a Starbucks Coffee machine inside and a small range of food/grocery items, some items were reasonably priced for a petrol station and not ultra-expensive, but obviously, you wouldn't want to buy food items from here unless you had no other option as they still end up costing considerably more than nearby supermarkets. Petrol is, of course, a little expensive here as you'd expect. The overall service station was pretty clean, I liked how they have a clear pathway from the street for pedestrians who want to access the store which is handy, although it is a good walk from Burnley town centre and even Barracks Station, so I would say to come in a car if you're able too. Sadly, there are no Amazon Locker facilities here, although a nearby Texaco garage/service station which is just under a mile away does offer them, I do think they're missing a trick by not offering them here, however, as there is a lack of them in Burnley as a whole. 4*

I had trialled Home Delivery with them once before and one smashed-vinegar-bottle-covering-my-shopping later put me off trying that again. Several months down the line and I thought I'd try the C&C service instead. After the usual online shopping, you choose a collection slot (typically two hour periods) and drive to the petrol station, parking in one of the spaces over to the left hand side. The set-up is pretty novel, there are several large chiller/freezer units outside the forecourt shop which contain customers' shopping in trays. You pop into the shop, confirm your name and one of the employees accompanies you to your unit (as this was my first visit, I was told that they usually give customers the unit's key and you're left to your own devices). I was surprised that there wasn't more of a check on whether you were the legitimate customer or not... The unit is opened and you remove the packing trays from the shelves to get at your shopping. For those with an 'eco' mindset, be prepared for a ridiculous number of carrier bags. There was one with a solitary box of Cook's Matches I'd ordered, another with three bananas. Not pleased about that at all. In fact it's probably that which will dissuade me from shopping this way again. That being said, the employee who showed me the ropes was thoroughly helpful (she was actually on her meal break but still came to assist me). Tip: If you can, choose a collection slot before it's dark as it's difficult to make sure that everything has been delivered and that you're happy with any substitutions they've made.

The concourse is clean and looks good, it looks very similar from the outside in comparison to Burnley Barracks Services, also operated by Euro Garages so I presume this is the new format they are looking for with their service stations. Part of the main concourse felt like a construction site, it was bare and unclean. It wasn't motorway service station level, but there were a few brands here including a Sainsbury's To Go, Greggs and a Starbucks Coffee machine. They also have one of the UK's only Cinnabon locations and a new drive-thru McDonald's, the latter is brand new and opened in March 2021. The petrol station is provided by Shell, again this is typical Shell prices, the same as the Shell Petrol Station just meters away. They have toilets inside the main terminal which is friendly, service seems a little impersonal and the prices are a little high, there's little excuse for paying their grocery prices given the fact there's multiple supermarkets just down the road (Aldi, Lidl and Asda), and even more a mile or so away if you head into Bolton town centre (Sainsbury's and Morrisons). 3* - Not too bad, I would have liked to see a Subway or Starbucks location here, but I presume they decided against that as both brands have stores nearby on Manchester Road, I do feel access as a pedestrian from the main road could be better without having to walk onto the forecourt (moving cars = dangerous!)

The services are 24 hour, and are located near Runcorn, just past the city of Chester. The services are quite small but have an ample car park. On the outside of the services in a seating area, and a small grassy verge with trees, separating the area from the motorway. At the entrance to the services is a dog bowl filled with water and an AA stand. Further inside, there's a Wimpy, which is closed at nighttimes, a Costa coffee bar, an ordinary cafe area and a WHSmith, which has the usual stands outside filled with books and special offers, such as camping chairs and waterproof jackets or fleece jackets. Behind these are the toilets. The toilets are clean and there are many of them. Before entering the toilets there is a useful area containing boxes of leaflets for local attractions, and a mobile-phone charging station, which allows visitors to charge their phones, securely. The WHSmith is quite impressive - it stocks a range of foods and drinks, magazines and newspapers, CDs, maps and books. They always seem to have a lot of special offers on too. The Costa coffee is a bit hit and miss, though. Because it's often quiet, they tend to use the chairs to separate areas, which means going outside on the terrace is sometimes not allowed. On a few occasions the coffee has been lukewarm, and once, they had run out of ice, and a customer was given an iced latte that wasn't even cold (I overheard them complaining about it).
