I made plans to visit a girlfriend in Austin, and she had the genius idea to arrange for us to do a foodie bike tour for the afternoon. She contacted Texas Bike Tours, and Deaton spent a lot of time working with her to create the perfect customized itinerary just for us. We rode about 8 miles and hit up all the best foodie spots, saw some of the most beautiful and historic parts of the city, and had an incredible time eating tacos at Vera Cruz and doughnuts at Gordoughs. The bikes we rented through Mellow Johnny's were great, we were provided with fresh baked granola bars, lemon water, helmets and bags for our stuff. The weather was perfect, and I can't say enough good things about our guide Katherine and Texas Bike Tours. She was incredibly knowledgable about the city, history, and architecture. She's also an excellent photographer! She snapped pictures along the way, and all the pictures are uploaded to Dropbox for us to use as we please. Upon our return, we were given hot towels to freshen up, and hugs (optional, but I like hugs). Whether you're visiting Austin, or you're a seasoned local, if you like being outdoors, you should check them out! Such a memorable afternoon and such fantastic customer service. Had such an AMAZING day with Texas Bike Tours! When I found out my friend Kellie was coming to Austin to visit I wanted to find something active and fun and FOODIE related for us to do! Because that's the kind of people we are... We workout. And we EAT! I consulted with Google and stumbled upon TXBT. Two weeks away from Kellie's planned visit, I sent an inquiry. (Mind you, this was the week of New Year's Eve and only a couple of days after Christmas.) I received a prompt response from Deaton whose description and enthusiasm about riding was very contagious. I will admit I was not very excited about a bike tour in January for a few reasons. 1) the weather in Austin had been crappy and depressing. 2) I know how to ride a bike and am very active but I am by no means an experienced rider. And 3) I usually work night shifts and am slightly antisocial lately. Deaton and I worked very closely for the next two weeks to come up with a perfect day. Truly, I cannot say enough about the experience I have had. Deaton is just phenomenal! She has such incredible insight and attention to detail. I mentioned a few things I liked and wanted to experience on a bike tour and she/they seriously knocked it out of the park! "Fun, unique, eclectic, colorful, flavorful," to name a few. I expressed to her my concerns regarding weather and *ahem* my lack of experience. And she really took those things to heart! We anticipated a Saturday trip, pending weather. Deaton insisted that, regardless of the rest of the weekend, Friday would be the best day to ride. And she was right! The weather was perfect. Slightly chilly but we were able to plan accordingly. She even suggested ordering our meals ahead at our destinations in anticipation of the lunch hour! Needless to say, we had an enjoyable, leisurely ride, and finished right on time. A few other things that were just icing on the cake: 1) our "pathfinder" Katherine was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and an absolute sweetheart. She made sure to take her time with me until I felt comfortable riding the bicycle in downtown Austin. Not to mention, an excellent photographer and extremely professional. She didn't eat because she wanted to be on her A game and I even saw her decline to be in a photo with all of us. To me that said the experience was not about her, it was just about us, even though she was clearly enjoying herself. I thought that was very thoughtful and respectful of her. 2) Mellow Johnny's bike shop in downtown Austin hooked it up with the bikes and helmets and even had bags for our stuff. My bike was used but the brakes were perfect, gears changed easily, and my tires were aired up well. We had no issues whatsoever with equipment malfunctions or failures. Thumbs up to those guys! 3) The food trucks! We stopped at Veracruz All Natural in east Austin for tacos. I had the fish tacos and they were, hands down, the best I ever had. Then we stopped at Gordough's food truck on south 1st. There are no words for this one. Perfection, maybe? Last stop was at the Picnic food truck park near Barton springs. Needless to say, we were a little too full from the previous stops. BUT that area is gorgeous and the ride there was challenging and fun. 4) At the end Deaton had warm hand towels for us, small gifts, and I forgot to mention had given us homemade granola bars. Overall, both ladies really took their time getting to know us to ensure we got the most out of our time with them. And we certainly did! My husband and best friend organized a bike tour for my 30th birthday during a recent trip to Austin. It was the HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP! We had the best time -- learned a lot about the city from Deaton, our knowledgeable guide and leader, and had huge smiles on our faces the whole time. We rode leisurely and comfortably (this tour is suitable for novice bikers like me) and the tour was customized to our small group. My boyfriend lived in Austin over a decade ago and this was my first visit. We wanted to begin our adventure with a tour to give us a good overview. We corresponded with Deaton via phone and email, and before we even arrived were experiencing some wonderful southern hospitality. We met, Deaton had lemon - mint water ready to go and sunscreen. We rode up a couple of big hills in some nice residential areas and got to Mount Bonnell where we got to take in beautiful views. Rode down to Mozart's Cafe, stopped at a preserve and saw some preening peacocks, and a few other stops, with our final being a picnic at Zilker Park. She also had some frozen towels to help us cool off. Our pathfinder, Rich, was awesome. He's a friendly,  easy going and funny guy. He let us go at our own pace and encouraged us to explore the stops...  Other tours I've been on were like  "Here it is, you can come back later to check it out." Highest recommendations for the best bike tour in Austin! I used Texas Bike Tours 3 times, so I don't even need to say how much I love it :) Whenever I have guests this will be on 'must do' list. Deaton is amazing, and I always have feeling that her priority is not to earn money but to have happy clients. She always have prepared snacks, wet towels, sunscreen lotion, water etc. I moved to Austin less than 2 years ago and on these tours there is always something new to see and learn. I signed up for a the September texas bike tour. It was the perfect Sunday Austin experience. The bike route was not too challenging and remarkably, the group stayed together and saw all the best places in Austin on a beautiful day. We were greeted at each stop and I learned something new even though I've been living in Austin for years and seen Mt. Bonnell, Laguna Gloria, Mayfield Park, Umlauf Sculpture Garden (and more) many times before. I would highly recommend this as the perfect activity for entertaining your out of town family/guests. The tour attracted friendly people and the support team was very attentive. And the food was excellent!! This bike tour was a real treat with excellent attention to details. The best Sunday I have had in Austin! I am relatively new to the City and wanted to do something special with a visiting friend - we chose the "Romancing Austin Tour" which was absolutely delightful! First off, It was great to have the valet service drive my vehicle to the end destination so we didn't have to worry about that. The ride was leisurely and each stop along the way had a fun surprise or unique element the tour incorporated - they are a very creative team! The entire staff was so kind and accommodating and you see some neat spots throughout Austin that you normally would not take the time to check out. Some of my buddies were coming to town for Memorial Day weekend. We travel often and like to experience a destination from different cultural/historic, culinary, and scenic perspectives. Deaton planned an amazing and unique bike tour for me and my 3 college housemates to explore the artistic and unique side of Austin. This was only the second time my housemates and I have gotten together since we graduated from college in 1982. We were all meeting in Austin, and I wanted a way for us to have fun, see the city, and get exercise. The bike tour was the perfect way to do that. The highlights of our tour: the H. O. P. E. mural gallery, which I had never seen before, the Pfulger Bridge over Town Lake, Green Pastures for the peacocks, the Austin mural, South Congress area, an artists residence, then a stop at Barton Springs. Deaton made sure we rented outstanding bikes, and then had us practice riding them before the tour to make sure the seat was adjusted properly. She provided water, helmets, a food treat, and sunscreen when we needed it. My friends enjoyed every minute of the bike experience. We had beautiful weather which made everything absolutely perfect. I had't been on a bike in 10-15 years and I had never tried riding in traffic. When I read about Texas Bike Tours, I had the idea that maybe a bike tour would be a fun way to break the ice. I wrote to Deaton and explained that I was very rusty and nervous to get out on the road. We agreed to do a "Get Used to Riding a Bike" tour the same weekend. It was so much fun! Deaton had a few bikes available for me to try, and I found one that was a great fit. She had a helmet and water bottle ready for me to use. Since I needed a refresher, I started out riding loops on a quiet street while Deaton reminded me how to switch gears. Once I was able to get around without too much wobbling, we went on a ride with Deaton leading the way. It was fun! Deaton used clear hand signals so I could tell what was coming next, and stopped at intervals to explain when we were approaching a tricky traffic situation. One of my goals was to ride to the Hike and Bike trail, so we rode through downtown to the Town Lake Trail and Zilker Park. It was a beautiful day and a great adventure. Getting out on the bike felt so good, I ended up buying a bike the next day and now I'm riding it to work! Now I feel like I have cycling adventures in my future. My wife and I took a bike tour of Austin last weekend with Texas Bike Tours. Adam, Catherine, and Deaton showed us around town and really gave us a good feel of the city. I felt like this was the perfect way to get a good feel of what Austin has to offer and how the city is laid out. In addition, we were able to add on 20 minutes at the University of Texas's campus with a retired professor who told us some of the history of the school. The tour was capped off by a trip to Torchy's Tacos which put a nice exclamation point on top. The bikes were also in very good repair, and there was no issue riding them around town. We moved to Austin only a few months ago but never really had the chance to truly discover Austin. Being Dutch we love to ride bikes and figured it would be great to have a guide who could help us explore the city. Jacob was our guide and he did a great job! We loved biking through the city and felt completely safe at all times. Riding a bike is something we do every day in the Netherlands, so we felt comfortable biking while wearing flip-flops - I guess that was a first for Texas Bike Tours! i volunteered for the july 29th texas bike tour after hearing a friend talk about this wonderful new small business in austin. the whole experience was enchanting - from the volunteers to the participants to the coordinator/owner. the tour route is by design accessible for all ability levels, and so well-staffed. when one rider took a tumble, she and her bicycle were delivered by car to the green room at the botanical gardens - the luncheon chef put a bandaid on her knee and we served her lemoned ice water and white wine while she waited for the others to arrive! the event in its entirety made me smile; i've recently returned to austin from a three year stint in a delightful small town, and texas bike tours is just the kind of business that makes austin seem personable, kind and welcoming again. read more
