When you are her patient, it is not the best time in your life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was recommended to me by my surgeon Dr. Bonefas. I told my BFF who I was seeing. Low and behold, my BFF had taught Dr. Joyner's children. Small world. After meeting her, I could totally see myself hanging out with this woman. Her personality is delightful and she has a great sense of humor. I know you would not think that at a time like this your doctor would be cracking jokes. She wasn't, it was me. My humor kept me going. When it reached a point that I could no longer take the pain to go to work, Dr. Joyner wrote a note so I could work from home. No one needed to hear me moaning and groaning. I really was hoping that I could make it the entire time and be in the office. Yeah not so much. In addition to her being so knowledgeable and kind, her staff is amazing. From the receptionist, her nurse Suzanne, the techs (sorry guys I can only recall one name) Dale and the two gals. Everyone was great. Going to radiation therapy is no walk in the park whatsoever. And Dale was on the money when he said it will get worse before it gets better. Good golly! I called and spoke to Dr. Joyner and she is going to write another note. She made sure I had meds to help with the pain and gave me further instructions on what to slather myself with. It is a journey. If you are looking for an oncologist/radiologist, I cannot imagine anyone in the Houston area any finer than Dr. Joyner. She is a doll and knows her stuff! 1,000 Halley puppies wag their tails and look for the techs and yell "Who's Deanna?" (FYI - I said a line from The Walking Dead each day before I was zapped to signal that I was ready. I tried to keep my sense of humor going even under adverse conditions.)

For almost a year, we have…read morestruggled with delays in treatment and an ongoing lack of communication from his doctor's office. He has had several hospitalizations, yet only once has anyone from the doctor's office reached out to check on his condition. He was supposed to begin chemotherapy about a month ago. We informed the office that he had been hospitalized, and a doctor from another location saw him in the hospital and told him that once he recovered, they could begin chemotherapy. It has now been about three weeks since then, and we still have no treatment scheduled and no meaningful follow-up from the office, or just a call for a check up. Communication has been extremely difficult. Nurses often do not return calls, and it is nearly impossible to speak with someone directly. Today, I called around 11:00 a.m. because I had an important question regarding my father's medication and symptoms. I was sent to an answering service, and by 3:00 p.m. we still had not received a response. My father is currently unable to walk, so simply going to the office is not an option. We are also told that appointments are required to be seen. The hardest part of all of this is seeing my father lose hope. He has told me that he feels his doctor has given up on him. As his daughter, I didn't know how to answer him. At this point, our family is facing very difficult decisions and is desperately trying to find someone who will listen, communicate with us, and help us understand what options are available. If you are considering this practice, I strongly encourage you to do your research and understand how communication and follow-up are handled. When someone is very sick, timely communication and continuity of care matter enormously. I sincerely hope no other family has to experience the uncertainty and helplessness that we are experiencing right now.

When we found out my wife had breast cancer our PCP referred us to Dr. Hude for Oncology. We went…read moreto one visit (office) where he told us we would need to start Chemo therapy and do a PET scan. My wife did not feel good about this doctor so we found one that she felt comfortable with. After 1 visit we find out that she is not as bad as we had been led to believe. After bloodwork we find out that Chemo would not have even helped my wife's cancer. So instead of going with Dr. Hude's opinion, we saved my wife the damage of Chemo, had breast conserving surgery and is only going to need 4-6 weeks of radiation treatment. Please be careful and trust your feelings when they are telling you that something. This one guy could have made the rest of my wife's life much worst by predisposing her treatment, however we have a much more effective Oncologist and a much brighter future thanks to his open mind his ability to treat the cancer according to its properties. Not gonna say that money was a factor in any decision but the difference between them is astounding.

This entire time in my life is one big flash and I cannot decipher one day from the other. It all blends. Thankfully I have a wonderful husband (BTW we were not married a year when I received this diagnosis) and a magnificent medical team by my side. Dr. Ellis is so down to earth. He tells you everything. I'm telling you it is a total blur. I am still going wow--breast cancer, huh? How about that! After he tells you the down low, he draws pictures and goes over it again. Each time I saw him, he did this. The man knows, all doctors in this field know, that you are scared out of your mind because you are dealing with the fact you were told you have the C word. I have no family history because I am adopted. It was unlikely that I needed chemo, but all of that was based on "opinion." I cannot recall the name of the test, but it was at a genetic level and it was not the one that everyone kept saying oh yeah the blah blah blah. It took forever to get the results back. Name confusion since I was recently married and one place had me under my maiden name yada yada. The results came back--no chemo. He went the extra mile to make sure that I did not need this before sending me to the next step--radiation. That's when I went on my way to see Dr. Joyner. If you need an oncologist because of breast cancer, this is your man. I could totally hang out with him too. Great personality. I kept my sense of humor throughout the entire ordeal. I had been…read morediagnosed with stage 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with no lymph node involvement in August of 2007. I had 4 rounds of Adriamycin/Cytoxan chemo, followed by 33 whole breast radiations. My local oncologist decided to scan me following my treatments and found that my cancer had spread to my liver DURING treatment. That's when I went to Dr. Ellis. He literally saved my life (I was not expected to live past April of 2009). He worked hand in hand with my local oncologist so that I could receive my treatments (directed by Dr. Ellis) locally, rather than have to drive the almost 3 hours to Siteman. His bedside manner is impeccablem he truly cares about his patients, and he is brilliant. He was recruited to Baylor in Texas in September of 2014, and that is where I will travel to when/if my cancer spreads (I'm in remission). I can not say enough wonderful things about this man. If you have breast cancer, I highly recommend Dr. Ellis.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is extremely stressful and traumatic. Dr. Miltenburg was able to clearly explain her approach so that I could understand, and feel confident about her recommended procedure. Her vast experience goes a long way as well. Given my age and other health conditions, I was very reluctant and nervous about doing a double mastectomy. Now that I am on the road to recovery, that was the best decision ever. Our experience as an international self-pay patient was deeply disappointing. Before traveling to Houston, we repeatedly requested a written cost estimate by email, phone, and MyChart. **We never received one.** Instead, we were forced to rely on verbal discussions regarding the expected pathology costs. The final pathology charges were approximately double what had been verbally communicated, with **no revised estimate, no advance warning, and no consent before the additional costs were incurred.** After we challenged the billing, later statements reflected the previously discussed self-pay discount that had not been clearly shown beforehand. Even more concerning, **a provider name that appeared with one of the major pathology-related charges in the original MyChart billing was no longer identified on the later itemized statement -- yet the charge itself remained.** That discrepancy has never been adequately explained. The billing was only part of the problem. Before our visit, we submitted professionally translated Hungarian diagnostic records. During the actual consultation, we discovered that **a major portion of those professionally translated records apparently had never been incorporated into the review process or meaningfully considered.** We discovered this while sitting with the doctor. At the physician's suggestion, we recorded the consultation for future reference. Therefore, the discussion regarding the missing medical information is documented. The interpretation service was also far below what we expected from an institution treating international cancer patients. We effectively handled much of the Hungarian-English communication ourselves during the consultation. We formally raised all of these concerns through MD Anderson. We were eventually told that their decision would remain "as it stands," yet our requests for the actual written findings and substantive explanation went unanswered. The matter was ultimately escalated through legal counsel. That correspondence has also received no substantive response. We did not expect MD Anderson to automatically agree with us. We expected a respected medical institution to **answer documented questions, explain billing inconsistencies, account for missing medical records, and respond professionally when serious concerns were formally raised.** Instead, we have been met with silence. We went to one of the highest-rated cancer institutions expecting the highest level of service. **Our experience was the opposite.** **In our experience, once the required deposit has been collected to be able to secure an appointment, recovering disputed funds becomes impossible, even when legitimate questions regarding the charges remain unresolved.**

After trying to reach my doctors in Austin immediately after the diagnosis, I couldn't get a hold of my referred to thoracic Surgeon, who, as it turns out, it was in the middle of switching practices. They did finally get a hold of me a couple weeks later, but by that time I had been to MD Anderson and was feeling very confident that was the right move as even my oncologist said Austin medical system has not kept up with the growth! I was very discouraged, but then enter MD Anderson and next thing I know they have appointments set up for me all day long on Friday to meet my new Thoracic Surgeon and oncologist and I felt so much better and relieved. they had set up several tests that day as well so that my traveling back-and-forth between Houston and Austin is minimal. I just had my first chemo session and I'm back home in Austin and I'm very grateful to MD Anderson as I've had nothing but a marvelous experience so far ! They take care of you. They set everything up and you can stay at their on site hotel, The Rotary House, which they make affordable if you're from out of town.
