I stop 100% of the time when I cross the border from Louisiana to Texas. Usually clean bathrooms. Safe, at least during the day, as it is staffed. The main reason I stop is to take a walk on the elevated board walk that goes ~200 meters into the swamp. On any given day you will see alligators, snakes, turtles, and so many different bird species. When most people think a Texas, they think of big glass cities, vast plains or dry mountainous terrain. East Texas is swamps and pine forests. Very different than most tv or movie versions of Texas. It is equally awesome. Make a stop and enjoy. read more

They have done an impressive job on making this travel information center accessible and a fabulous entry with a beautiful building, a great walk over the bayou, clean restrooms and friendly folks who sincerely want to help. I visited the Texas Welcome Station this past week during a trip to Austin. I had left a day early, so I knew that I was going to need to find some things to do for a day before the conference I was attending was to start. The station is quite nice. The facilities are clean, there are plenty of displays describing the various areas of Texas, and there are lots of pamphlets for each of those areas with things to do. If you are looking for something to do, they probably have something there to satisfy you. Since I was heading to the prairie and lakes area of Texas, I looked through those pamphlets and found a couple of places that I figured would be interesting. However, the star of the show is the staff at this station. They were very helpful because of the questions I had, and they were able to fulfill those answers wonderfully. Great work! read more

It has a huge big cool star which is why I give it three stars, but there are not any food options and it's nothing special. Great rest stop off the I-10 when entering Texas! Super friendly staff + free maps, postcards, and other info pamphlets = happy traveler It's so nice to have a pleasant place to stop for cold drinks (they have vending machines), restrooms, and just a place to stretch your legs while on the road. Not only does this place meet all these requirements, but it goes above and beyond! They have soooooo much information about places and events all throughout the entire state of Texas, and they have super friendly and helpful staff! Plus there's a swamp outside with a walkway! Welcome to Texas, Orange, Texas. This stop and visitor center is Relatively Clean. Friendly. Staffed. Built for high traffic. The parking lot is organized in narrow rows, so you may have a considerable walk in, but the view is nice of covered picnic tables to stop and enjoy a packed lunch. Also in this same area are grass mowed patches of green to walk Fido. (Prominent signs advise to keep an eye out for wildlife, aka snakes.) The entrance has a considerable covered ramp. There are two sets of bathrooms (one via the top of the covered outdoor ramp) and one in the actual Welcome area. Vending is also accessed via the covered ramp. The indoor welcome center is a large room: overstuffed with brochures, several walk up booths / stations and big picture windows overlooking a large decking area complete with a viewing area of alligators. (One is a sculpture on the deck and the rest are lurking down below in the water) The attended guidance stations inside will spot and greet you amidst the considerable volume of brochures. (Admittedly, personally have not engaged their guidance, but my spouse was handed several brochures and a plastic Texas bag to tote said brochures away.) I've been here a handful of times and the place seems to be a pretty well oiled machine as it's able to accommodate a lot of visitors whether strolling on the outside decking, checking in with the guidance staff, or folks making a bee line for the facilities. Given the volume of visitors this stop has, the staff is ready for you. read more

Just like TX, it's big! Lots of information to take about the cities and state in general. Maps and motorcycle information. Signed in at the visitor log. Walked the 650 foot walkway. Saw dragonflies, a red eared turtle, and flowers. I could hear, but did not see, the birds. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were well stocked and clean. We usually stop by this rest area in our way to Houston because the place are always kept clean and there are two separate restroom area, vending machines with snacks and drinks and all the flyers and brochure and booklets for surrounding Texas attractions. I would have gave them a 5 stars but today the main lobby was closed. I usually like to go thru the main lobby to take a stroll behind the building where you can walk thru and admire the swamp and nature at it best and snap pictures. I usually travel from home early and be at the rest area around 8 to 9am and they were always open. Not sure why they were closed but atleast the other side of restroom were opened. There are plenty of parking and even an area for you to walk your pets and let them do their business. There is also a cool area where you can also take pictures with the Texas flags and cutout shape of Texas or large Star. read more

I never would have thought to review a Welcome Center before but after stopping here to make sissy a few times. (Ha! I wrote "Make Sissy"), I realized I could check in. So like any good Yelper, after checking in and making my bladder gladded, I scoped the place out. The 1st thing is the bathrooms are clean. The only issue with it is the stall walls are like 5 ft tall so any weirdo, pervert or freakishly tall guy can check you out while you drop the kids off at the pool. (I am loving all of my potty humor). The whole short stall walls creeps me out big time, I need my privacy when releasing the dirty squirrel into the wild.....OK OK that's enough. The rest of the Welcome Center is great! Plenty of shaded picnic tables out front to eat a sammich and chillax, a specific dog area so they can go make.....no more euphemisms but you know what I'm saying. There is a huge star to take you picture in front of and the "Welcome to Texas" sign is on the Welcome Center grounds to also take a picture with. The inside is equally great with lots of brochures, maps, and pamphlets as you'd expect. This one however is extremely organized. Each brochure area has a map above the station highlighting the area of interest. The wait staff is extremely friendly. There is also a 1/4 mile boardwalk into a swampland directly out the backdoor of the visitor's center. There are plenty of signs identifying the types of trees, plants, birds and other animals that you may see. My home state of Louisiana should drive across the Sabine River Bridge and check this out. Their Welcome Center could use some interior work. Well done Tejas! read more

We visited a lot of welcome centers on our road trip. We drove across 8 states in 8 days. Texas was one of the better ones. It was large and the worker had a lot of info for us. It looked clean and shiney. There were some great photo ops outside the welcome center. read more

Always have to stop at the Welcome Centers. Love them. Being full time RV'ers these places can be a godsend. Being right at the Louisiana Texas state line at I-10 this center gets tons of traffic. It is quite large and fully staffed. Staff was helpful in finding some brochures on some of the smaller areas we will visit. Loved the big Texas star at the entrance. Was able to get information for all the areas we will be visiting. This trip we will be going all the way through on I-10. Love having information in advance of places we will be stopping. And with all this info we may end up with a few extra stops. Restrooms and parking areas were very clean. Quite a few truck/rv parking spots. read more

According to some of the literature I picked up inside, this is the busiest welcome center in Texas. There are numerous rows of travel brochures and magazines for cities across Texas. Plus, they're logically ordered by region. The staff is very helpful and friendly and won't hesitate to help you find what you need. However, the main attraction is the swamp boardwalk outback. It's a lovely way to stretch while taking in the unique beauty of the swamp. As an added bonus, there was an alligator visible today! read more

The eastern gateway to Texas!! This is a great rest stop! Huge parking lot and nice bathroom facilities! The giant star that you see from the highway is a must have picture! This rest stop was very clean, not to mention full of brochures detailing the many exciting places to visit in Texas. I was interested in the presidential libraries (for a future visit), and one of the employees provided me this information and showed where it was on a state map. In the exterior, there is a long boardwalk along with signage detailing the history of the Blue Elbow swamp. Very informative, and I noticed many families showing their children this Texas beauty. Inside, you can find clean restrooms, and more brochures than you could ever want. They have all of Texas covered at this info center. You can get maps of places like Orange to El Paso and everywhere in between. They have a walkway that juts out over the bayou, where you can see snapping turtles, alligators, and dragon flies. It's a beautiful walk! The welcome posse is an incredibly nice crew that have that East Texas drawl, and friendly Texas attitude that we're known for. By the way- What's with all these 4 star reviews? You're entering the best !$!@% state in the union! There are nice flags flying outside and a great big star proudly representing the Lonestar state. They have a scenic little walkway in the back with some great natural views. It has all of the requirements with a nice reception building and wooden walkways to walk out over some of the nearby swamp area. The big Texas star out front offers a great photo op for visitors. Wow what a hidden gem! The center is packed with Texas brochures of this and that. The wooden pathway leads to the depths of a real swamp. Great way to experience a real swamp, the stillness of it, the beauty of it, the danger of it. There is wildlife you have to watch out for but the wooden pathway is brilliant! You don't have to spend money on taking a tour. Just walk down the pathway and admire the serenity of it. Listen to the swamp sounds. Interesting to know there were native Indians that lived off this particular swamp. Out in the front there is a photo opp to take a pic next to a "Welcome to Texas" sign. This location is right on the border of Louisiana and Texas. read more

Nothing nicer than a welcome center when you're entering a state. It offers a place to strength, rest, a bathroom break and more importantly, a place to obtain information on the state you're driving into. This place was clean and friendly and offer you a lot of information. Weird that it offered more information on El Paso than Austin or San Antonio. In fact, it was disappointing. But I found some information and utilized it when I entered all those cities. read more

After a week of driving across the country and visiting multiple welcome centers, the sight of my hometown welcome center was a sight for homesick and sore eyes. As I walked into the center the stench of urine hit me like a brick wall. I was mortified to see so many people walking around wincing at the odor and holding their noses. The women's bathroom was completely out of toilet paper and dozens of women were commenting and flashing disgusted looks at each other. All I could do was walk out and drive to the nearest gas station. I was actually embarrassed to be there. So many people excitedly taking pictures with the Texas sign and the beautiful star but then probably completely turned off at the state of the bathrooms. I think I drove several miles before I got that smell out of my nose, it was that strong. Please, please, if this review reaches those powers that be, please don't let this be the norm at this welcome center. I love my home state and am proud to be a Texan. We deserve a better representation than this. read more
