We had an American Five Guys in California [reviewed previously] and it was the best burger I'd ever had. I was delighted (although a little skeptical) when I heard that they had made it across the pond and that they would be opening in Guildford, one of my favourite shopping haunts. We visited in December and it was just as good as the burger we had in the American branch - excellent. We had learnt from our previous mistake and only ordered one small fries to share - this was more than enough. We got the plain ones because even though we love spicy food, their spicy fries just don't hit the spot. My only complaint is that it was quite expensive. We paid £25 here for two burgers, one fries, and one drink and $22 (£14.50 in today's money) in America for two burgers, two fries, and two drinks (more food + drink). So it is quite pricey compared to America AND of course expensive for a burger, but it's not somewhere we will go to more than two-three times per year, so it's worth it. I was pleased to see that the decor was the same, the help-yourself peanuts were present, and the 100+ varieties of help-yourself unlimited drinks machine was there. It was all very authentic. It's in a quieter part of town and far less rowdy than the one in Derby. Iced tap water used to come in large jugs, but now you are given a small glass as you are sat down. Service is mediocre but fast, the clientele move in and out of the restaurant quickly. They serve a decent range of aperitifs, nibbles, starters, pizza (includes calzone), risotto, desserts, wines, coffee and spirits. I've tried many dishes here and most are not that special except for their pizzas (pizzas range from 6.50-9.50 GBP), they are thin, crisp and light with the main feature being the topping (as it should be). Here are my favourites are: Pollo al Rosmarino - Marinated chicken, mixed roasted peppers, goat's cheese, mozzarella, tomato and rosemary. Trentino - Smoked mountain ham, buffalo milk mozzarella, fresh oregano, oven roasted cherry tomatoes, rocket and grana padano cheese. Calzone carne piccante - marinated chicken, meatballs, Bolognese sauce, mushrooms, chili, mozzarella and tomatoes The best dessert on the menu here has to be the "banana con cioccolata" - caramelized banana with toffee and chocolate sauce on a Belgian waffle, served with vanilla ice cream (4.75 GBP).

Usually sweet potato fries tend to be a bit on the soft side with no crunch. These were scrumptious with a little crunch on the outside and soft and steamy inside. Yum! The slaw was also a hit with me. The dressing was a bit different than what I'm used to, but I couldn't figure out why. Nonetheless, it was a vinegar base that went well with the chicken and had a nice jalapeño kick to it! The sauces were good, I tried them all, but the chicken didn't really need any sauce. I will note that the mustard based sauce was unlike any I've tried but I am not fond of mustard base sauces to start with so I've not tried many. The service was good, our server was pleasant and it was nice enjoying BBQ in a rustic pub atmosphere. My only complaints are the slaw serving was a bit small. It was just the right amount to put on a sandwich but to me it wasn't enough for a side; and part of the chicken breast was just a wee bit on the dry side, but not enough to really detract from the meal or make the chicken tough. I've smoked enough chicken to know that chicken breast can go from moist and juicy to cardboard pretty quickly so timing can be very tough. Overall I found the meal delicious with some great smoked chicken and superb sweet potato fries! If we're ever back in the area I'll be back here for a meal!

For a few hours, except for the British accents of the servers and paying the bill with Pounds. As country music played in the background DH and I shared a half rack of pork ribs, fries and coleslaw. We also had Cokes from the 'imported' American drinks on the menu. The ribs and fries were just right. The only odd thing was that the coleslaw was dry - it contained no mayo. I thought too late that we might have asked for mayo and mixed it in ourselves. The toilets were upstairs, and clean, and the upstairs dining areas featured views of the palace.

I admit, I was very frustrated with the long wait, and mumbled under my breath about how long it took to make a coffee. Unbeknownst to me, the server was right behind me and heard my remark... needless to say, service was prompt and efficient after that! I ordered the Plant Plate and was absolutely blown away at the huge portions, also how delicious everything was. I'm American, and my spouse is British, so I always thought it was strange to watch him eat baked beans for breakfast over the years... but surprisingly, it's pretty good and I'd definitely have it again. My spouse had the Pancake Stack with fresh fruit and really enjoyed his as well. The dining room is bright, airy, comfortable, and clean. The toilets are clean as well. I sat at the bar stools which overlook the river and shops/restaurants below, nice view and great for people-watching. Here's where the experience started to go downhill a bit. The lady behind the counter mentioned that they would call my number once my food was ready, but the music was blasting so I couldn't hear them. One of the six or so staff members standing around idly could have easily walked it over to me (there were about 10 other people in the restaurant and I was the only one without food so pretty obvious it was mine). I can kind of overlook this though, guess it's half my fault for not paying more attention. By the time I finally walked over and got my meal, it was a bit lukewarm. The portion sizes are good, I got the "little" burger and "little" fries and both were pretty hefty. The burger was really tasty, had no issues with it, same as I remembered. The fries were pretty limp, which was disappointing. My whole meal came out to £10 (drink included). Overall I was satisfied, but probably wouldn't come back to dine in with the annoyingly loud music. Good burger though, I might get just the burger (hold the fries) to-go in the future.

My final whinge will be that the didn't let us book as we wanted to eat at 6.30 but when we got there made quite a bit of a fuss about the fact the hadn't booked. The staff were all very confused. They had a lovely selection of drinks and I enjoyed a very modest Hedgerow Fizz which was a mere £3.501 In this area, you will not find better food, ethically sourced anywhere else. It really is quite wonderful. They also have a food store here and do hampers for gifts with goodies like Berkshire honey and Bill's homemade chilli jelly. It's worth eating here if you're in the area.
