Everyone knows I have a crush on Bill. His Brighton home wooed me from the moment I met him there and discovered his macaroni cheese. I then uncovered the amazing desserts, wonderful wines and charming service. All of that under one roof in a fabulous old barn. So when hearing that Bills was opening up in Reading (which is about as close to my home town as you can get) I squealed with excitement and insisted on taking the parents out for dinner there. The building again is amazing. Bill has a way of choosing places with real character and this old house is the perfect setting. Upstairs there are two private dining rooms one with an enormous farmhouse table perfect for sitting large parties all together. The food is again, wonderful. I feel that the desserts didn't look quite as amazing as they do in Brighton. They were a bit mean on the fruit front, they also charge you per portion of bread, even though the portions are tiny. My final whinge will be that the didn't let us book as we wanted to eat at 6.30 but when we got there made quite a bit of a fuss about the fact the hadn't booked. The staff were all very confused. They had a lovely selection of drinks and I enjoyed a very modest Hedgerow Fizz which was a mere £3.501 In this area, you will not find better food, ethically sourced anywhere else. It really is quite wonderful. They also have a food store here and do hampers for gifts with goodies like Berkshire honey and Bill's homemade chilli jelly. Pretty standard breakfast fare. I stopped in for a quick breakfast. It was my first full English, seemed right... Runny Sunny eggs with toast, streaky bacon, sausage, beans and tomatoes. Amazing place for brunch, with the most delicious pancakes! If you're brave enough, go for the 5-stack, and make sure you request more maple syrup (trust me, you'll need it in the end). A nice place for breakfast. The service was great and the decor was lovely. I got myself an avocado toast and a latte. The toast was nothing to boast of. It's your usual toast that you can make yourself at home. 8pounds was a bit pricey. However the latte was the best I have had in UK until now. The eggs Benedict is the one to order and get your money's worth. This place leaves you will a very friendly vibe and a great start for your day especially if you are a tourist. Centrally-located in Reading, Bill's is a trendy, rustic restaurant/bar/shop hybrid. We went there for a Christmas meal, so I'll forgive them a few gripes. The place is populated with bare lime-washed wood furniture and punctuated with character accessories such as jars, cans, ropes of dried chillies etc. in a style very similar to that of Jamie Oliver's "Jamie's Italian" restaurants. They say you should judge a venue by its bathroom. Well the bathroom in Bill's was pristine - clean and crisp. Good start. The food was good. We were eating from a set Christmas menu, so I'll assume that food from the regular a-la-carte menu would be a little better. I chose the meat starter platter, lamb shank and chocolate brownie. The meat plater was a collection of cured meats, pickles, a few leaves, toast and a espresso cup of delicious tomato soup - very tasty and a great combination. The lamb was less appealing - clearly churned out due to the sheer number of dishes. It was cooked nicely, but served with an incredibly salty mashed potato and a blob of red cabbage. Others in the party opted for the roast chicken option, which oddly came with no vegetables - just a roasted chicken breast and small roast potatoes. The brownie was served with ice cream and predictably gorgeous. The service was variable but friendly overall. The dishes were delivered to the diners by name, but drinks and cutlery were unceremoniously dumped on the end of the table for us to distribute. Price was reasonable - three courses and wine cost in the region of £30 per head. read more

I've only had breakfast here but let me tell you, I'm a fan. The dishes are quite simple but mmm delicious. Try the eggs benedict with salmon or the eggs florentine and top it off with a strip of bacon. Pair that with a nice glass of fresh squeezed orange juice and you're golden. This place is quite strategically placed as I always pass Bill's on the way to the train station, and every time I walk past, I feel a craving creeping up. Will pop in some time in the future to try their lunches. Wait staff was pleasant and the interior had a very homely feel to it. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the price. It's not the cheapest place to grab a bit to eat but for the occasional meal, I can't think of many places better. read more

We went here as a group. The food was a standard menu: burger, chicken dish, and steak. The food wasnt anything to write home about, it's the standard over priced underwhelming Reading food. However, the staff was wonderful! They were friendly and cheerful, even though we were a larger party and it was a bit late. We won't be back for sometime because of the food but Bills will make the rotation faster because of their service. read more

I'm not sure how long Bill's has been around but there are an increasing number around the UK. They all have a similar theme but quite different buildings - I've been to Reading, Guildford and Westfield. The menu is quite broad but I really haven't done it justice. I tend to go for Bill's Breakfast if I'm early enough or the FSI pie later on. Both are excellent and the burgers are very good too. Neither the burgers nor the breakfast are at all greasy which can be a problem. The ambiance is good - you are surrounded by a huge range of products that you can buy but there is no pushy sales chat at all. Staff have all been very friendly and will work on seating you ASAP when they are busy. Wi Fi is free but you need to enter the password which is written up in a board. Definitely a string recommend! read more

Reasonable food, OK prices, pretty slow staff. We've been to the Bill's in Oxford and the food and service was great so thought we'd try the one in Reading when we were in town but sadly it was a little lacklustre. The servings were quite small - particularly the salads, which are pricey for what you get. It took 2 or 3 goes to order food and get drinks. It was busy, perhaps too busy for the staff to handle. Would be willing to try again. The location and setting - particularly the outside seating in the summer - is lovely. read more

This cosy and comfortable restaurant is located a bit away from the bigger highstreet chains and the Oracle shopping mall. But it is definitly worth a visit. The decoration is very nice and done with love, the staff is welcoming and very helpful. Also they had some issues to prepare our food in the usual time they offered free drinks as an apology for the long waiting and everything was very easy and not annoying at all. During the waiting we used the time to explore this nice restaurant, had a look at the enclosed produce store etc. When the food arrived it was nicely presented and very tasty. Portions are very generous, freshly made and perfectly seasoned. Overall we spend and enjoyed a very nice evening in a relaxed atmosphere and a very much recommendable restaurant. My husband and I had breakfast here while we were in Reading, and we're fans! Expect a short wait, but its totally worth it. The breakfasts are English staples, but very tasty and reasonably-priced. My husband had the English breakfast with delicious Cumberland sausage and a rasher of bacon, while I had eggs and smoked salmon on a toasted boomer (toast for us Yanks). Make sure to order tea, which is a great complement to breakfast. read more

Excellent cafe/restaurant combined with produce store. Small and popular, so crowded, but lots of seats outside in fine weather. Probably the best burger in Reading. Lots of variety and lots of veggie (if you like that sort of thing). Generous 'snacks', so you need to be hungry. Great breakfasts all morning. read more

Found by chance on a rare visit to Reading. Apparently they have a few other branches and were obviously well known by the locals. 10 mins after we arrived at lunchtime on a Saturday, there was a queue out the door. This is an historic old building on the outside in a nice quiet spot off the main drag facing a churchyard. Plenty of tables outside. Inside it is all exposed brick and steel downstairs with high wooden shelves packed with jars of stuff to buy in one room, an open cooking area and the overall impression being of buzz and colour (the decor, the packaging of the things they sell and even the sample Bill's cookbook on the table). Up a huge old staircase and there's more seating with exposed floorboards. Quick pitstop for a bacon sarnie and coffee, and Mrs B. had a beetroot salad thingy with mozarella and thyme. Bacon sandwich right up there with the best. It's all in the details. Good bacon, lovely fresh bread and the bacon filled hot into the buttered bread. Yum. Very very good (though Cafe Coho in Brighton still my fave). I don't like beetroot all that much but Mrs B's lunch was delicious too (see the pic). Service is good and staff seem happy which always helps. read more

Really enjoyed this restaurant. I went back a second time. The peri peri chicken burger with yam fries was excellent. The half chicken in herbs was also incredibly good. I had a dessert called an Eton Mess? It was something mess, meringue, raspberries/strawberries? with whip, just dreamy. Great setting and excellent service. read more

The food at Bills is pretty good, with good flavour and variety. Coffee is barely acceptable, but most coffee in Reading (most of UK) is that at best. Prices are ok, but staff are rude and make you feel like you wish never to see them again! read more

Awesome food and friendly staff. The interior is colorful and u cant stop looking at every detail. I had the burger which was decilicous and my friend had the piri piri, grilled chicken with rice and raisins! It also tasted great. We had pavlova for desert which was one of te best non chocolaty dessert i have ever had. I also had breakast there a few months back. It was a nice typical english breakfast but i would recommend to go there for lunch. They gave more choices. read more

First visit and very impressed. Funky, relaxed interior with happy staff, I had Bills Burger which was lush and my girlfriend had the fish finger sarnie which was even more yummy! The pink lemonade and vanilla float was the best bit though, highly recomend for a nice shopping lunch pit stop. read more
