Sunday was the launch of XP at the Mockingbird Theatre. This is a geek themed event held once a night and is a bit of a mecca for all things board game, computer game, quiz and film orientated. Naturally we had to go. I am currently on a bootcamp scheme (see http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fit-body-bootcamp-birmingham for info), meaning I am on a strict diet of proteins, fats and No carbs. After consuming a smoothie for my breakfast and a salad for my lunch, I was starving hungry by 5pm. Everyone seemed to be either ordering pizza (a major no-no for me) or heading to Subway for their tea. I thought neither of these would be an option before a helpful person mentioned that Subway did salad bowls, problem solved... Or so I thought. Despite having all of the components of salad, Subway in Digbeth DON'T do salad bowls (and their staff are pretty unhelpful too). In a major grump, I left the store to see what else was on offer on the street. Right next door I came across Mother Clucker. Firstly, they scored a point for having a name that made me snigger, secondly... They couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. After a quick peruse of the menu I opted for lemon and herb chicken (which is served without skin). I asked if I could have some salad with this, after looking at me strangely for a minute - the guy said "Sure, we can do that. It'll be no extra charge". Winner. The chicken was cooked fresh for me as I waited and I requested some lettuce, onion and chillies (all I could have). I was even warned that the salad might be a bit rubbish as it's predominently meant for burgers, but I thought it was sweet that they warned me. My diet friendly feast was a budget busting £3.50. The guys that did end up going to Subway ended up pretty jealous of my dinner after all. This new kid on the block is sparkling clean, very friendly and super helpful. Will I be back? You can bet your bottom dollar I will.

The sandwich toppings were sparse and the cheese was not up to par - a little bland. Five Guys quality usually stipulates a heaping helping of toppings that drip off the bun with a delightful mesh of flavors. The lettuce was wilted too, which ruined the textural balance of the sandwich - all mush - no crunch. Fries were sadly undercooked and grainy in texture. On a positive note, the location is bright and very clean. I like that the soda machine is the same as in the states - any combo of flavors you want and unlimited refills. If you're going to a 'Fatties R Us' place like Five Guys, you've got to have free refills.

This wasn't a problem as we filled the time talking about how he got started in the burger business and what was different about his food. Honestly, if you ever get a chance to chat to him - do! He's a lovely chap. My burger looked amazing! Unfortunately I ate it before I thought about getting a picture, however, it was meaty, cheesy and just fantastic. The bun was soft, the meat tasted and looked fresh and the cheese was the perfect accompaniment. It was one of the best burgers I have had in Birmingham (and I've tried most of the greats). The meat is juicy and full of flavour and the marinade is Vindaloo style hot; it quite literally takes your breath away.
