I would go here again if i wanted a special meal but not on a normal night out as it is too dear. Its popularity is due to the fact that it presents hugely tasty traditional Indian and Pakistani cuisine in unpretentious surroundings (true, it could do with a bit of a refurb but it works for me). The meals are very reasonably priced to say that it is clearly cooked by highly talented and experienced Indian chefs, and service is very fast and as polite as it should be. I decided to bite the bullet and went for a chicken madras, which is more spice that I can usually handle, but it went down a treat, especially when washed down with the bottled Indian beer. The naan breads were glorious too. This place really is a cut above most of the rest. I'm a big fan.

I have visited here on a number of occasions, and over time tried pretty much every vegetarian option on the menu, and each time have found the food, service and atmosphere faultless. A few people I know have complained to me that the décor is a bit dated, and it certainly won't win any prizes for interior design, but if you're capable of ignoring a bit of peeling wallpaper you'll be rewarded with one of the best - and best value - Indian restaurants in town.

Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

The decor is very modern inside the restaurant, and instantly, you can see that it is very popular with both locals and students alike. The menu is wide, offering your standard curry favourites, as well as other 'specialities'. I opted for a special, and I was certainly not disappointed. The flavours were good. There was just one thing that I and my boyfriend were not really sure of about the place. It certainly wasn't the lack of custom, nor the staff- who were very welcoming indeed. It may well have been the lack of complimentary popadoms at the start of the meal. It is slightly more expensive than your average curry (only just), particularly being so close to Hyde Park. Although the food is clearly made with more care and very tasty, my dish tasted very similar to my boyfriends, prompting the thought that they use the same sauce for everything. With that in mind, I would suggest that you go in a group, to disprove this theory, or to the buffet they serve up on Sunday night, to sample more of their flavours.

Second time I've been to Akbar's and loved it both times…read more Unlike many Indian restaurants which tend to be dark, cramped and not very up marker, Akbar's has a bright, spacious, clean and just generally nice atmosphere. There are tons of seats but it works with the layout. Staff are friendly and timely too, which is always a plus. And now... the food. Amazing Indian food. I'm basing this mostly on a butter chicken curry to die for. Basic, but brilliant. The naan is also great and it hangs on a upright stand which is interesting. I also had a daal and some onion Bhajis to start. Both pretty decent. The papadums are no different to other good Indians but are equally good. A classic British curry house doesn't exist without a good range of beers. Akbar's is no exception and is great for groups. There were two birthday groups while we were eating and the music suddenly swapped and started playing some Birthday music. Not the biggest fan and made the place seem a bit tacky. All in all, a great place to come for a cheeky curry, with a group of friends or family but not so great for formal or special occasions.

They don't have a booze license, but they almost encourage you to bring your own, or, as the place is surrounded by pubs and bars, you can always nip out and bring some back from any of the nearby places. The chicken korma I had was delicious, and my (much more adventurous) friend was singing the praises of the liver starter dish for the rest of the night, so it must have been something special. Moghul's don't just play it safe - they offer less traditionally stereotypical dishes such as fish and the aforementioned liver, and for this they must be praised. But most of the praise must be reserved for the prices - scandalously low for such fine cooking.

Very standard affair but well made and just about spicy enough for me. The foody to my right was a little concerned about the origin of his meat. I guess when you buy duck and don't recognise the taste you.... (cry fowl?) sorry. But despite reservations over the taste everyone did enjoy the food. Its a little small and on a day like we've been having recently, incredibly hot inside.
