I thought the phone map was lying. Surely the Lincoln Center-Jersey City route would involve Columbus Circle or a jaunt along or under 14th St. Yet it recommended going all the way down to WTC via the 1. I have occasionally gotten too arrogant about my geographical knowledge and spurned apps, but now I'm secure enough to listen the opinions of the phone and Google Maps. In this case, the phone was playing some moneyball and was probably adjusting for off-peak transfer times as well as the proximity of the 1 to the WTC PATH stop. It's not an express but it's not the G train. It hits many stops but doesn't linger at them. Someone you might be willing to spend a few extra minutes on the trip in exchange for getting a seat, and the 1 makes that choice relatively painless. read more

Over my years living in NYC I have taken the 1 train many times as it serves the west side, from South Ferry in the Financial District to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx where I ran a few 5K's. It's a pretty consistent line with decent service but as with the MTA has it's delays and problems at times. The 1 train line has been around since 1904 when the IRT covered parts of the original line from City Hall to 145th Street. Yeah, it's pretty old. read more

I rode this train every day to work for almost 6 years. I took it after two other trains each day. It was the final leg of my commute from Grand Central Shuttle down to Houston. I never had any trouble. It's slow local service that stopped every station. Today I took it from 168th down to 96th and Broadway. Smooth ride, no crazy people on board this trip. It's a subway. Nothing much else to say. It was clean today. I did see a rat on the 168 Street platform. It was as big as a small dog! At least it wasn't on the train creating panic! read more

With my new found chapter, I make my daily trek into Da Bronx via 1 Train. Connecting at 168th Street to catch the 1 train undergoes a labyrinth of long and windy stairs and passageways including an elevator ride. The 1 train is local therefore the ride itself will feel like an eternity. This train runs elevated above the ground beginning 125 Street into the Bronx. It crosses the Harlem River Ship Canal between Inwood in Manhattan island and Marble Hill (originally part of Manhattan island but separated by the ship canal; it is still part of the borough of Manhattan). The 1 train (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line) crosses Broadway Bridge above the road. Immediately to the north of the bridge along this rail line is Metro North's Marble Hill - 225th Street station. The rail cars are narrow in width compared with the A train. read more

3.5 stars. I've been taking the 1 train for the past 17 years... pretty much since I moved to New York. I never really realized how reliable it is until I moved apartment and was forced to trade it for another train about a month ago. Service on this line is solid. No matter the time of the day, you never seem to wait long for this train. Weekends are obviously slower; however, the most you usually have to wait is about 10 minutes (give or take). It's not great, but it's still better than being stuck on a platform for more time you can remember. 1 trains are usually well kept. They do get often rerouted on the express line, but this almost never happens in weekdays. There's one exception to this review, which is the basic reason I can't give it 4 stars. During countless weekends, service on this line above 137th street gets interrupted, and passengers need to either embark on a painfully slow shuttle bus or take the A train, a 6-10 minutes walk away. This is beyond inconvenient for those people living above that line, especially because it seems to happen on a regular basis. read more

The 1 is my home line and I really have few complaints. The A is a joke (especially on weekends, thanks Sandy you bitch for flooding the Cranberry tube necessitating reroutes to the Rutgers tube - aka when the A runs via the F from W4 to Jay Street) and I avoid it at all costs unless I have to...i.e. those lovely weekends when the 1 is suspended north of 137 or 96. In the summer the R62 cars (the stuff that runs on the 1) have some really hit or miss AC...aside from that it's usuallg a decent ride...and don't fall for the jumping on a 2 or 3 express at 96 or 72...I've done that too many times and gotten screwed by rail control holding the express for the 1 to go ahead. JUST STAY ON THE 1...THE FEW EXTRA STOPS AREN'T A BIG DEAL! The 1 is subterannean from South Ferry to Dyckman Street with the exception of 125th Street because the topography of Manhattan actually FORCES the route to become an El for that little stretch. Dyckman north to Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street is all above ground. Of note...now that they've finished the remodel of 168th Street (the ceiling collapsed onto the tracks several years ago) jump off admire the brilliant restoration work of the tilework and light fixtures (look up!) and the cavernous feel of this station. read more

1 star for the 1 train. I'm not bitter, I try to give all trains the benefit of the doubt for reasons they can't control. For the 1 train, the only thing it has going for it is its route, which is the only reason why I ride it (or has a star in this review!). There aren't many alternatives for 7th Avenue trains, minus buses of course. This train stops at 18th Street? That's awfully cute. Then there are all the other reasons. I used to think the 1 train was literally *one train* because it was perpetually slow. 2 / 3 trains whiz on by with ease during the weekday rush hour but the 1 clunks along with its cars nearly filled to capacity by all the other straphangers who have been patiently waiting only moments before. Is the weekend service any better? When in service perhaps, sometimes construction (as deemed by the MTA) disrupts the service and the 2 / 3 are forced to go local, resulting in more crowded and slower service. Then there is the actual train itself. Even the A/C/E trains went from grime to glimmer with the R160 new cars, I guess all of the extra money we've been milked from hikes and such haven't made their way to the 1 Train just yet. Just means we'll have to tolerate another dirty train line till the next best thing comes along. read more

We met the milkman the other day. Well, not really. We only call him the milkman because he carried around a kids' milk carton. The straw came out a few times, he wiped it right up on his dirty clothes, then put it back in his backpack, then took out another straw, dropped it on the dirty floor, then put it right into the milk carton. Then some milk dropped on the floor, which he wiped up with his gloves. "Better not waste any milk!!" Siipp! Just a foul-mouthed crazy dirty-looking dude who peppered every other word with those of the four-letter variety and proceeded to blabber nonsense to a poor unsuspecting group of Dominicanos while a woman glared with the anger of a thousand suns at this dude, and the rest of us bystanders looked and, unfortunately, listened on. Crazy Milkman to the Dominicanos: "Ya boys drankin your MILK!?" They didn't say much. They smiled and nodded their heads and laughed a couple of times, most likely AT him and not WITH him. Meanwhile, my son was having a ball because there aren't many colorful characters like Crazy Milkman where we live. But not my bro. He kept whispering to me, "Is this our stop? Are we getting off now? Oh man.... We leaving yet?" Lol. Despite crazy dude, this is a great train. It covers such a huge distance north to south. 1 train is awesome actually. I don't really use it that much lately. It is pretty convenient comes sort of frequently, except really late at night. I guess I don't use the train anymore, I have not been dating women that live in the Heights anymore or I don't even travel to the Bronx that frequently these days. I also have not been making my usual tv show appearance circuit in the past few years, I use to go to show like Regis and Kelly and a bunch of other that tape in the ABC studios area (1 train to 66th street). Happy I live so close to the 1, and the fact that it gets me most places I like/need to go. Xfer to the 2 or the 3 helps kill some waiting and bypass some touristy spots on the way downtown. Comes often and reliably, despite constant MTA e-mails about incidents on the line, which are always resolved quickly. 4 stars for all this, & -1 for being part of the MTA system. ALWAYS have to wait @ 96 St for a WHILE, though, especially late night. Cars need to be newer, or at least get some A/C, and track work needs to occur during the week. The fact that it's predictably Hot As Ballz leads me to believe that the numbered lines are ranked In Order Of the unacceptableness/inappropriateness of the temperatures on board. read more

This is the line I used the most during my two day stay at the big apple. I had access to both the 1 train and A since I was in between them were I stayed but the 1 train was way closer. This got me to all the destinations I wanted to go starting at 103rd Street towards downtown through Times Square, Penn Station, Columbus Circle, 72th Sherman Square, and to the South Ferry. It was good that it went to the ferry. So it went pretty much to all the places where I wanted to go and see the city in Manhattan. I also recall saying "Vous allez prendre le train número un. C'est le rouge" when helping some French speakers at my hostel; it was fun helping them. That's probably why this line for me is so memorable. The trains here in NYC are very cold so it's good for a hot day and for me since i have E.S.D(Excessive Sweating Disorder) and they're faster than BART. It's similar to the one in L.A. but better and bigger and wider. read more

Happy 100th review to me! I've felt ownership of a few train lines during my NYC residence -- D train when I went to Fordham. 6 train when I lived on the UES. 4 train when I lived in Battery Park. But my husband went to Manhattan College (located ironically in the Bronx), so I've been a 1 train rider for quite some time as well. You know the song "New York, New York?" As the lyrics go, "The Bronx is up and the Battery's down," and one complete ride on the 1 train will take you from the Bronx to the Battery in under two hours. Enjoy scenic Van Cortlandt Park. Take in a lecture at Columbia. Get yuppified on the UWS. Revel in the chaos of Times Square or Penn Station. Chill in the Village. Be too-cool-for-school in Tribeca. Stroll the promenade in Battery Park, or go all the way to the last stop and then continue your NY expedition on the free Staten Island ferry. Yay for this Broadway thoroughfare. read more

i remember taking the number 1 train when i worked a summer intern job near lincoln center and the train was always crowded and the stops were many as its a local train line .from the lower west side of manhattan to the upper side of the bronx the number 1 train will get you there but it will take a while so bring a book , listen to some tunes or take a nap. the number 1 train will take you to van cortlandt park in the bronx and in the opposite direction to the south ferry in manhattan . glad i got the boot from that summer intern job cause i hate slow moving crowded trains. read more

The last stop of the 1 train is near the board between Bronx and Westchester County and the first stop is South Ferry but they are still in construction due damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy. The M20 bus makes you appreciate the 1 train; I am astounded at how slow the M20 (runs parallel with the 1, 2, 3 to Lincoln Center) is. By contrast, the 1 train runs very regularly and if I have a choice, I always take the train. (Psst, guys: the 1, 2, and 3 trains *are* the 4,5, and 6 of the west side. The IRT trains--interboro Rapid Transit--were the first subway lines in the city and all run on narrower tracks than the IND--Independent--and BMT--Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit trains. The Good: ~At any time of night there will be a crowd of people on this line. ~Because my stop is so close to the end (or beginning depending on how you look at it) of the line, I always get a seat. ~It's scheduled to run more frequently than other lines.* ~Runs more regularly than the average train line. * ~It's cleaner than average. * The Bad: ~It's more likely to breakdown. * ~You're less likely to hear a train announcement. * ~And you people (not me b/c I live on the end of the line) less likely to get a seat.* The Ugly: ~There are 3 stations on the 1 train line that require the use of an elevator to enter/exit the train: 168th, 181st, and 19st Street, because of it's near seclusion there are a lot of homeless people in these stations. With the worst being 168th Street as the station is poorly lit and the ER always bring an interesting group of people to the neighborhood. Even though there are police officers always in the station, they'd be assholes if they threw them out of the station on cold, rainy nights (and despite popular belief not all cops are assholes), so it always stinks. The "Red-line" 7th Avenue trains (aka 1, 2, and 3) are pretty much the West-side's equivalent of the "Green-line" Lexington trains (aka the 4, 5, and 6) on the East-side. Having to get to certain parts of the UWS (Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, ABC Studios, etc), I end up using this train more times than I'd like too. Riding this train can sometimes feel like a "throw-back" experience. For those NY'ers here in the 90's and earlier, you know what I'm referring to. For those NY'ers who weren't, here's the rundown: - Ridiculous wait times (see below). - It's a train that gets more crowded that it really should be. With idiots who decide to stand in the most inopportune areas with bags, and not step aside to let you get onto the train. I usually make them step-aside. - Older cars that make you reminisce about the older #4/5 and A train rides. - Worn down shock absorbers that really let you experience a NYC train ride (circa aforementioned 1990's). I advise you to NOT eat before riding this train. - Poles, and bars that are not placed well...making straphanging less effective (especially when the train's crowded and jerks about). For the most-part, a lot of the stops along this line are in much better shape now than they used to be (and much better than some other train line stops), and some more are undergoing further renovations and "facelifts" (see my review of Columbus Circle Station here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/columbus-circle-subway-station-new-york#hrid:Bt504Wqy3985eUURt4recQ ). Naturally I'm biased for this review. I think the 1 train is possibly one of THE WORST trains in the MTA. I've had to ride it from mid-town to 238th form almost 4 years. And although transferring to the 2 and 3 express trains save me some time, it's not nearly enough time to make up for the agony that i experience on the 1. It's not as frequent as it should be during rush hour in mid-town, and as a result it's almost always packed tighter than a can of sardines. God forbid you're getting on at one of the smaller stations (like 50th st)--cos' there's a good chance you'll be waiting 20 mins or more, thanks to delays. I'm giving it 2 stars, because in all fairness, it will take you to stops where there's limited commuting options (even if some of the stops are only 6 blocks apart). I've lived everywhere and had to take all the trains in this city, the 1 has an upper hand on most and usually funny (not dangerous) things happen here. I love this train. Sure, it's not the fastest of trains, but it's a local train. This place gets me everywhere I need to go... I've been gone, taking the A/B/C/D trains recently (sorry 1... it's not you, it's me.) but I actually miss this train. At night, it always shows up, and it always gets me home. It doesn't look like I'll be taking it much more in the future due to my recent move, but it'll always be close to my heart. Given the choice, I'll always go for the 1 train. I try to avoid this one if I can since it stops at every single flipping stop in Manhattan (the 18th Street stop bugs me most). I'd rather take the 2 or 3 if I can help it. As far as subways go, this one doesn't have anything particularly special about it. This train will coach you into New York's brutal seasons : Winter and Summer. There's only two temps on this train; jungle fever hot and teeth-chattering cold. There's no in between and you it's a Russian roulette everytime you board. Other than dealing with the occasional booby sweat or nose drip, the 1 train is pretty reliable, hence the three stars. For a local train, the ride is normally smooth and runs every 3-5 minutes during rush hour. read more

God help you if you live north of 96 street trying to take this train downtown in the morning rush hour. You might have to wait for a couple trains to pass or muster enough courage to get in on the human sandwich. They need those people with cattle prods at the doors like they do in Japan... Also chronic "construction" on this line, be prepared for impromptu mid-day express 96-157 to tie up your day. And forget about going south of 14th street on most weekends. read more

So not a big fan of the 1 Train. I lived on it for a couple years and tolerated it. Then, moved so didn't need to use it so much - thankfully. But, now I'm back on the 1. Luckily, my new crib has alternatives only a few more blocks away. Some of the stations, especially uptown, are filthy, dilapidated, and in overall ill-repair (wait, is this a review of the whole transit system or just the 1 Train?). The trains are narrower than the A/C/E line, so crowding is an issue. I've had way too many harrowing experiences on the this line too. Random stops, sudden declarations of skipping stations, coordination with express trains, the works, man, the works! When I ride other lines, I feel a little jealous of the people who get to take them regularly (well, not trains like the G or JMZ - who takes those anyway??). But, yeah, I feel like the 1 Train is the red-headed step-child of the MTA. read more

Even though I am a fan of the express this is still a fast local train and most often it is on time. Also it is faster than the C which also goes local downtown and when I have to get to 64th street it is the best option as it is actually faster than the A train and me having to walk up to 64th street. I therefore disagree strongly with the ones that claim it is a slow local as I have the opposite opinion. I do not like how loud it is though. Because it is not one of the newest trains on the block the sound inside the cars are at times overwhelming. Sometimes even so much that I can not hear the music that I am listening too and that is not always that much fun. Another thing I do like about the train is that is most often only 4 minutes apart at times 6 minutes which makes it one of the most frequent trains in the city. read more

This is one of the better lines in the city. It runs regularly, services the entire West side of Manhattan, and the stations all have clocks (and the Subway Time App) so you know when the next train is coming and can plan accordingly. It's also pretty fast, and goes nearly as fast as the 2 and 3 even though it is a local. Negatives: although the train runs frequently, every train is pretty much packed from 5 pm until 11 pm on weeknights. Also, these cars are old and noisy. If they used the new 456 or NQR trains on this line, it would be hands down the best in New York. read more

Out of all the subway lines, the 1 is probably my least favorite. And even though the Houston St. station is, literally, right in front of my office - I've switched to taking the A/C/E and walking a short distance just to avoid this awful train. It is CHOCK FULL of tourists, more so than any of the other lines, from what I've encounterd, mostly likely due to the fact of it's South Ferry stop. Hello, Statue of Liberty! Whenever I am riding along this stinky train, and I see the random out-of-towners running from car to car at station stops, in order to get into one of the first five cars, I secretly wish the doors will close on them before they re-enter. And then they run from car to car while the train is moving and laughlaughlaugh because, obviously, it's so hilarious...maybe those doors shouldn't be able to open from the outside so they get stuck out there. While a terrible thought, isn't crossing between cars illegal anyway?!?! Fanny packs and white socks with black sneakers should also be illegal, but that's a whole other subject. The 1 also has the highest rate of panhandlers. Why? Because tourists love to give them their $$$. read more

Yeah, I ride on the 1 more than I ride any other train in New York City. It's just so damned convenient to the places where I like to be which are, conveniently enough, mostly on the West Side. Unfortunately it's usually crowded, has a lot of panhandlers, and often you'll be stuck with a mediocre musician while waiting for your train (although, sometimes you'll get someone awesome.) This line doesn't break down too often and when it does, it's usually back relatively quickly. But sometimes, it goes down and it seems to take forever. read more
