So many memories here. In my younger years, I would take bus from DC to here. Don't let the appearance of the exterior fool you. Inside there's shops and good eateries. My favorite is Brooklyn Deli. I love the convenience of tap to pay. You dont need a card. You tap once when you enter. Unlike DC transit system. Tbh I feel safer using the subway here than in my area. However be alert and watch your surroundings. Watch out for scam artists, and guard your belongings. read more

I docked my Citi bike outside the Port Authority Bus Terminal after a 24 minute ride, drenched in sweat as it was going to be a buzzer beater finish to determine whether I made my 8:30am bus upstate or not. I was on an all out sprint through this bus terminal that felt like it was more fit for a movie set for a film to take place in the 1980s than a currently operating terminal, my black backpack bouncing from my right side to left side on every stride, frantically looking for gate 403. After climbing 2 flights of stairs while following my north star of signs that read "Gates 401 to 421," I finally saw the "403" sign at 8:28am. I changed my sprint to a slow, nonchalant speed walk. I couldn't afford to lose any more aura points than I had already given up. I walked up to the attendant at the gate, and he must have seen the look of quiet desperation on my face as the words "You made it!" left his lips. I scanned my ticket and was the last person to get on the bus to beautiful Vails Gate, NY. I would go on to consume 5 rotisserie chickens in one day before taking the 3:30pm bus back down. Quite large yet easy to navigate. Connected to the subway system for convince, and located in Manhattan close to Midtown. It offers bus ports that take you all over the country. Specially for Boston you can travel to and from South Station or Logan Airport. It is 4+ hours but at half the cost of a plane ticket. read more

In its current state I don't know who would like the experience in Port Authority: crowded, loiterers and shady characters, and not much in terms of stores/foodstuffs. However, the chaos feels more manageable than Penn Station and they have made some improvements over the years like getting monitors that tell you what gate to go to. Few want to hang around in Port Authority so you go in, catch your bus or subway and then get out. The lines for the buses can get quite long, meandering and mixed together, and unless you're a regular traveler you will likely have trouble knowing exactly where to go. There also never seem to be a lot of employees to approach to ask questions, unless you go to the ticketing booths. Bathrooms leave much to be desired as well, better than a port-o-potty at least! There are a Duane Reade and Starbucks, as well as a few other places but the transportation center certainly can use some modernization and cleanup. Location wise, an easy walk to touristy spots like Times Square, Broadway shows, and the iconic bustle of NYC. read more

Parking for New York City, New York... My friend reassured me that she parks at Port Authority Bus Terminal when she goes to "the city". Ok. We parked close to the elevator, on the 5th floor, caught the elevator to the ground floor, and walked out to the Theater District and Times Square. It was very convenient, safe, and relatively clean. Parking totaled $49 for about 8 hours, including tax. We could have stayed up to 12 hours for this price range. read more

It's no surprise that Greyhound often has delays, but on Thanksgiving Eve the buses were especially behind schedule when my friend and I take few years ago. What's more disappointing is that this year, they don't seem to running any buses from NYC to Atlantic City after about 5:15-5:30 p.m. I have been checking their website since the summer. I'm not sure when they canceled the later service. I know not many people travel there on a regular basis, but I would have expected them to keep the evening schedule on Thanksgiving Eve. In past years, the buses still ran but with delayed. But people definitely took them, especially since many travelers can only leave after 5 p.m from work. Hopefully they bring back the evening buses, at least during the holidays. I know Atlantic City isn't as popular as it used to be, but there are still concerts and events happening. It would be nice to have the option to go directly from Port Authority again. Now it seems you can only take Nj transit to go there. read more

Other than the rude bus driver (#164 - 3/15/25) that got us here -- and the lingering putrid odor of rotted urine from the dude who asked me for change -- this place is fine. The staff here is extremely helpful and seem to know that there are many of us who are tourists. By the way, for the price, which was just more than $7 from Glen Rock, NJ to NYC, the NJ Transit Bus can't be beat. Not only do we not have to endure the road rage of people who need counseling and perhaps a prescription or two, we also don't have to deal with parking and the associated costs. About our driver... I was listening to audio from a LinkedIn post on my phone, and the dude had the gall to yell out "Is somebody using speakerphone?!?" First, the decal posted on the ceiling illustrates a boombox and basically says "radio silence." There is nary a sign that says speakerphones are prohibited. Besides, a there's a huge audio difference between the speaker from a phone and a boombox, but I digress. Though our driver gave us some advice about buying tickets vs. using our credit cards, he just seemed angry. He stopped (and delayed us) at one point to yell at a guy who was parked on the side of an avenue, which partially blocked his way. Our driver was actually good at driving. Very good. His people skills, on the other hand, could use a major overhaul. -- I'm married to a wonderful woman who was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx and NJ. Further, I even bought her a T-shirt that says "I'm not yelling! I'm from New Jersey!" But the driver on this bus wouldn't appreciate such raw, honest humor. I understand that the folks who work for NJ Transit are in a union and wouldn't get fired or even corrected without intervention from God. Still, these drivers. To the locals, tourists, and those of you that wish to read my review, the "Port Authority Bus Terminal" is one of the major bus/subway stations that are in the heart of Lower Manhattan in New York City. In fact, it is the biggest in the entire United States. The other two terminals/stations, "Penn Station" and "Grand Central Terminal" are also major connecting points in Lower Manhattan that are in close proximity that have transported millions of passengers dating back to the mid-20th century. However, since I am focusing specifically on Port Authority, I will state the details of this gigantic terminal as well as all of the pros and cons that one can experience. First and foremost, this terminal is absolutely huge; almost to a point where it can be a rather daunting and intimidating task trying to navigate around here. From past experiences, my advice is to download the MTA app while putting exact directions in your phone prior to your destination. This will definitely streamline the entire process. I do want to add that many connecting buses go from here and travel westbound to New Jersey while the subways connect through Manhattan and beyond to the neighboring boroughs; Queens, Bronx, & Brooklyn while you can connect to a ferry in case you need to travel to Staten Island. My advice is to definitely have an OMNY (One Metro New York) card which makes getting through the ticket gates much easier. Since the Metro cards are being phased out by the end of 2025, OMNY is the primary way to get around; at least in New York City (but not New Jersey). I do want to add that this place offers a ton of food/drink options that are specifically in an enclosed underground environment. This includes "Hudson" (which offers everything a small convenience store would carry). In addition, you have your typical cafes, bakeries, and major well-known businesses such as Dunkin', Jamba Juice, a Yankees team store, a beauty store, a U.S. Post Office, and much more. Restrooms are available and are open 24 hours a day; much as the way the trains run in this big city. The look and feel of this retail, food, and entertainment space almost mimics that of an airport. All in all, "Port Authority Bus Terminal" is a monstrosity of a place and my review didn't even scratch the surface of how big this place is. Keep in mind that during the busy rush hour commute times, you are bumping shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds in all directions. Just take a deep breath and get to where you need to go. It is New York City and passengers can get irate on any given day. With that said and done, I am going to say that this place isn't all fun nor is it a big letdown. Which is why I am going neutral by giving this an average 3-star rating. read more

I'm a Jersey girl and taking the bus is my primary form of public transportation getting in and out of NYC. I refuse to support Uber and its shady, overpriced fees. As soon as I step into Port Authority, I try to get in and out of there ASAP. I keep my head low and wiggle through the crowds of people. It does the job of getting me from NJ to NYC and vice versa, so thumbs up for that. It is nowhere near as safe and clean as people dream of it being, but it's gone through a good number of renovations. The interior has improved a lot and there are more shops and food options. If it's your first time at the terminal or if you're not used to taking public transportation, I highly HIGHLY recommend doing your research ahead of time to avoid any chaos. The website (panynj.gov) contains information about maps, routes, and carriers. Download the NJ Transit app and get familiar with the bus lines, stops, and zones. There are employees at the information desks to help you out, but it just helps to plan ahead of time. For the seasoned travelers, there's self-service ticket machines. You can also purchase tickets on the app. The terminal is always bustling with crowds, but the signage is helpful in getting you to where you need to be. I've had positive experiences with the bus services. They usually come on time with little delay. I guess I'm lucky lol. I do wish there was more seating and space at the bus gates, but hey.... I'm not gonna knock it because a $5.50 bus ticket beats driving and paying for the ridiculous bridge tolls and congestion fees :-) read more

Ok, the late night buses change gates, and they don't update the digital signs for some reason, making me late for one bus that was supposed to be in the 200s, and ended up moving up to the 300s. I had to ask a staffer on the 3rd floor (why there were none on the 2nd floor as of those who were looking to find one there couldn't...). Boarding was efficient, at least. Anyway, at least the bus service is closer to the Lincoln Tunnel with dedicated lanes out and in for rush hours. It's close to Times Square for more trains. And it's crowded and a little smelly. Seriously, update your signs, folks. Do better. read more

Bus hub connector to other cities from nyc. I will say the buses usually leaves on time. Good amount of AC inside bus. The terminal has food options and convenience stores. But if you step outside there are other better options. Yellow signs shows you the gates. Make sure to ask staff that you are at the right gate. Our gate got moved because of a soccer game and lucky we were there earlier. There are also elevators and escalators. I think it's second level where you can attend to a staff to buy a tickets and right next to it is the bathroom area. ACE train lines get you directly to this bus terminal. read more

The daily commute hub for thousands of people who come to the city for work from tri-state area. It is the destination for NJ Trasit, Greyhound, Peter Pan, Lakeland and many other bus services. It has A C E B D F M N Q R W S 1 2 3 7 subway lines. There's taxi stand right outside the terminal as well. The terminal has ticketing booth and kiosk. For commuters and passengers there's Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Jamba Juice and few other stores. The authority tries their best to maintain the terminal, but it's pretty old building. The boarding gates for buses got some renovation few years, so they are not as bad, but subway stations are so bad. In summer hot humid air wraps the N Q R W platform. Often the escalator in 7's platform stops working. A lot of homeless people, random preachers and street sellers crowd the ramp platform to main floor. Despite all the short coming this place has been successfully serving millions of passengers each year. Hope it gets some funds soon to overhaul its current infrastructure. read more

What an absolute freaking dump this place is. Decided to take a bus from Manhattan north, and I never imagined NYs bus station in Manhattan out of all places would be this horrible. What an absolute cesspool. From the condition of the facilities in this place, to the staff that work here, absolutely no one cares. I have been to third world countries that, take more pride in their bus terminals. This is by far, the worst bus terminal i have ever been to. This terminal is ideal for me whenever I go to New Jersey. The employee at customer service is usually kind and helpful. Some of the lines are very long depending on the time of day you arrive for your bus departure. Therefore, it's important to arrive early for your bus. Once you're at your correct terminal, there's not much seating areas available or charging stations. This terminal needs a full renovation/upgrade. Although it's convenient to get to another state without taking a flight, you do encounter some rude people and homeless people. Fortunately, this is not a terminal that I utilize often. read more

Train is connected to the terminal so easy to get to. I wish there were more signs to know where to go but i love that there are many workers and police around always willing to help. This was the bus terminal that we used to return home to Baltimore. This was a very busy place. I was surprised that I didn't locate any places to purchase food inside. The however had a liquor store. Lol. We were in line for return early however, the busses were running late. There is not much sitting room in the terminal. Pretty interesting experience. read more

Have been here multiple times. The biggest pro is it's a fast in past the Hudson River and often a faster out than driving. There is a decent amount of stores and food vendors but not quite as good as Moynihan Train Hall. The big con is it is very confusing and often the same bus routes leave from different bays and floors. Also there is not much seating for waiting for a bus. read more

I think we all know entering PABT that we are going to encounter a lot of people, panhandlers, rude people, and the worst of what NYC had to offer. Basically I'm only here for when I'm traveling to NJ for either Jersey Gardens or MetLife Stadium. I would say just be aware of your surroundings and give you take game extra time in case there's a delay, which happens here frequently. read more

Go there early at least 30-45 min to find a location. It's complicated to find a bus stop. A nice man at the port authority, he showered me where's my bus stop is. According to my email/ bus website, it just said the address. So I thought I should wait on 8th ave. My stop was under ground. LL2. I'm glad I got there at least 45 min advance. Around the port authority, restaurants, inc Macdonald so it's better to be in the area early to eat and be there as k mentioned 30-45min advance. Bathroom is an available. It's a little confusing as far as to where to get your bus and all but luckily there are friendly people that work here and they guided us to the correct place in order to board the bus . They have clean restrooms and some vending and places to buy snacks from. It's good , I enjoyed my visit . read more

When I arrived, the gate had been changed to the floor below. No biggie, I thought - just another two minutes in a transportation center that resembles the 'Murderous/Psychotic' wing of a state mental hospital. Then I saw the elevator doors open, pushed aside all instinct to take the stairs and stepped in. As soon as the doors opened, there were spinning and whirring noises aplenty coming from just around the corner, as well as cheering. I turned to find what the youth call a B Boy, spinning ferociously on a cardboard platform. The spectators cheered him on as the human tornado spun so fast, my mustache nearly blew off, all to the crowds cried of 'GET EM CUZZZZ' This encounter is the reason for my one of five stars. The four absent stars in my one star review relate to everything else one experiences at PABT, from rampant stray animals eating peanuts from overflowing trash cans to hissing bus conductors, staring and leering as they entice you into taking their ride to the afterlife. I have included the BBOY selfie I took that would later be shown to my immediate family right before Easter mass as proof that Hell has been on Earth since 1950. It's conveniently located between 8th and 9th Avenues on 40th and 41st Streets. read more

I find the terminal to be in the best location. In my opinion, it was in walking distance of everything I needed, including hotel. It does appear to be dated and could use some remodeling and does appear to be kind of dark and dirty but overall it serves its purpose of allowing travelers to go to and from destinations via bus. I did not need to speak to customer service so I'm not sure how helpful they are. read more

On the way to American Dream, route 355, NJ TRANSIT, it was fast, and smooth. But on the way back, the bus staff told me that it was a Sunday schedule and another one told me it was a holiday. I searched it up and it said today was the Sunday schedule. So, we left American Dream for a 6:26 scheduled bus. But, no buses for almost an HOUR. Please get more buses. We had a Greyhound bus scheduled from NY to Hartford at 1am. The bus driver of this bus never showed up for work - the supervisor of the platform let the travelers know that they would be attempting to get in contact with the bus driver for 30 minutes and to standby. After the 30 minutes elapsed the information desk representative told us that the driver would not be arriving and that they were going to change our tickets to a Flixbus. Some travellers decided to do this and after about 10 minutes of waiting in line, suddenly the information desk representative stated that the bus driver was now on their way and that we can wait back in line. After about another 20 minutes, the supervisor came over to let us know again that the bus driver was NOT arriving and to switch our tickets to the flixbus. And after about another 15 minutes of frustration a different supervisor came over to let us all know that another bus driver was coming in 20 minutes. All in all, we did not depart until 2:30am, after a grudgingly long day in New York the emotional toll of going back and forth between 'are we getting a hotel, are we paying for an uber, are we purchasing a flight, are we sleeping in the bus terminal, is there going to be a bus driver or not' - Multiple passengers breaking down from frustration while the information desk attendee smiled and laughed at the passengers confusion and anger at the situation. And then when I called your support representatives to get a refund I was directed to email an email address that also refused a refund- this is simply unacceptable . The amount of time and frustration that has been spent talking to Greyhound reps is ridiculous and while I understand this all stemmed from a bus driver missing his job shift - the way your staff handled the situation was insane. One of the biggest travel hubs in the world and you don't have on-call drivers, or at least trained staff who can communicate? Then when we finally boarded, the supervisor whispered to the driver that 'he caught him sleeping' - I don't know if he was the original driver or if they just decided after an hour and a half to wake up their emergency backup driver but honestly - what the hell. read more

"Due to Covid, we no longer do any transactions from the booth/attendant. All Metropass purchases need to be done at the kiosks.". MEANWHILE... 1) The majority of the folks live, move and operate through here as if there is NO Covid. The Media continues stating that the pandemic is over. So is this inconvenience/"safety measure" in place truly for Covid or for other reasons? 2) If you want us to use the kiosks, then have them properly set up to give paper cash change and not with a strict $9 coin change limit. This was my first time being at Port Authority in about twenty years. I had to get to jersey quickly and didn't have quick access to my car after work . Oh boy has it not changed. I did not expect it to be clean at all but it was so dirty :( I got my tickets on the NJ transit app but there are plenty of kiosks to go to if needed. I had trouble figuring out the zones but my daughter called and figured it out for me. One thing I loved is the group of people watching the World Cup together on the big screen. I love NY and how we can come together like this! Also the driver was amazing. It was the day before thanksgiving and they were plenty of delays / traffic but she got us there in no time. read more

As a native New Yorker sometimes I visit New Jersey for events and I have to walk through here. Please be alert while you are walking. The bathrooms are not the cleanest. The shops are a bit pricey. For example the Walgreens in this location charges a little extra. Do yourself a favor and walk to the Walgreens on 44th street and save a couple of dollars. read more

I've been coming to the Port Authority Bus Terminal for years and it has always tried to do a good job at getting commuters around the tri-state area. I always see uniformed police officers addressing issues and on patrol. It always gets hectic during inclement weather. During those times when there's an accident on I495, or there is a disabled vehicle inside the tunnel..... you better have a snack, or a sandwich, cause you might miss a meal or two before reaching your destination. I keep hearing that there is going to be a major overhaul to the entire site, but I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime, I enjoy the new displays that they have installed at the lower level gates, which tells you the bus line, and departure time, for the next bus. As long as you're patient, the PABT will serve your needs and transport you to your destination. read more

My buses from Boston always end up at the Port Authority, this station/terminal is somewhat sketchy and needs to be renovated which I think they are working on. It is outdated and homeless people are everywhere. Staff are nice but terminal and signage can be confusing. read more

Taken the bus here a couple of times...yes the PA Bus Terminal is huge. Easy to get here by train - will come up one entrance. Main entrance from the street is 42nd and 8th Avenue...Hudson News and Dunkin donuts when you come in... get your bus ticket and check the schedule for the gate the bus is leaving from on the upper level. Restrooms one flight up from the main level along with Hallmark (if you need last minute card/gift, McAnn's sports bar if waiting awhile to catch your next bus. There is free wifi for 30 minutes if you connect to the PA terminal free wifi... restrooms also on the 2nd floor. If you are coming into the station, look for the signs that will take you to public transportation - trains, the train to the airport or another bus. Easy to get your bus ticket ahead of time online or at the machines...pay attention to peak and non-peak times for travel... It's back to peak/non-peak given travel is back to pre-pandemic levels. Just like any mode of transportation, pay attention to your surroundings and stay safe. I have taken the bus into NJ and back via PA Bus Terminal - nice ride and fairly easy to find way around the terminal. read more

I took my first bus ride from Port Authority to NJ for the first time in several years and was reminded why I don't do this more often. The signs in the terminal or pretty confusing, and aside from individual operators (like Greyhound) which posted their own departure schedules on screens (ie. destination, time of departure, gate #), there is no place for the average rider to figure out what gate your bus is supposed to leave from, or even which bus line you should take to reach each destination. You even have to know the bus line already prior to buying a ticket at the ticket machines, I'd already looked up the info online prior to arriving so I know the bus line, but had I not done that it would be extremely confusing and daunting to figure out. Once I bought my ticket it didn't show which gate I was supposed to go to, I had to them line up at a ticket window with live support to ask which gate I needed to go to. Thankfully the line wasn't as long around 11am on a Saturday morning and the agent was helpful and knew right away which gate to go to and gave me clear directions. But this whole process makes so little sense I'm annoyed/angry how inefficient this is.... Had I not arrived 30 minutes early, I might have missed the bus and been extremely late to my appointment. Above doesn't even mention how there's no way to learn when or why your bus is delayed, and whether the next bus will arrive on schedule. There's a basic website/app that shows total departures from Port Authority, but the schedule is just at the whim of whatever the current traffic situation is. read more
