It was built by Virginia Hernandez (Bailey) Tucker (1844-1931). She was the daughter of William James Bailey, a colonel during the Second Seminole War. He was stationed at nearby Fort Brooke in Tampa. Colonel Bailey purchased the land and nearby natural springs in 1855 and made the spring waters available for public use! I know the Whistle Stop has been around for 30 years but it was my first time in. What a nice transformation! Excellent use of the space. Less creative folks would have just bulldozed the drive in but thankfully they've transformed it into a fun bar with delicious fish I can say for sure. The grouper sandwich was perfect as was the fish and chips. The fish spread was good as well. A great selection of truly local beers ontap and a full bar. Lauren was a delightful server on a beautiful night to enjoy the weather. I'll be back!

Spanish explorers visited this area searching for a waterway across Florida and seeking the legendary fountain of youth. Ultimately what they found were indigenous tribes at war with each other. Settlements were made but everyone disappeared, Christianity was spread, disease was spread as well, and ultimately the original local tribes suffered as Europeans settled. All of this started in the 1500's believe it or not! Imagine life back then and being the first Europeans to visit Florida or being a native resident and having the heavily armed Spanish show up suddenly one day in a ship! Life is good when you appreciate history!

If you're a runner or walker, you'll love the Best Damn Race and Best Damn Leftovers Race held here each year. Safety Harbor seems to be a very pet friendly area, too. The Chalk Fest and street fest Fridays are so much fun. The shops on Main Street are super cute and walkable, and views by the pier and off Bayshore are memorable. I can't wait for my next visit!

Love the fact that I moved to Safety Harbor and I discovered the local Legion. I have been a long…read moretime member of the American Legion since my time in the Army. A few Legion posts just are plain boring with monthly meetings, but this post is the exception. My wife and I went in on Wing night / Karaoke night and had a blast. Granted, you can not come in here if you are not a member, but if you are a friend of one they can sign you in. This is a classic 80's style Dive bar, and the average age here is very much Viet Nam, and older Vet's, but for me (Persian Gulf, Bosnia, etc) it wasn't a big deal. I love hanging out with Vet's of all ages and love coming here for cheap drinks, great conversation and slightly scary karaoke :) Glad I'm a member and I moved into this town. This post is very connected to local charities, city events, and people that know people to get things done around. For example, my new house needed a kitchen and at least 2-3 members of the post owned companies in the area that can do just that. Can't wait to go back!

I do like these historical markers that try to preserve a bit of history, even if the original building was moved and then ultimately destroyed. Odet Philippe was one of the first European settlers in the area. He gave the "honeymoon house" to his daughter and son-in-law around 1843 and it was later moved to this spot. Believe it or not, this suburban land called Grand Central Avenue was the original center of town! Now, it's residential and Main Street is where all the businesses are located. This spot and building was the town's first post office as well as general store! There was also a large dock here while the current Safety Harbor pier and harbor is a bit south for this location. Thanks to the Safety Harbor Museum for researching this and establishing this marker!
