Stopped in for a late supper after getting to Safety Harbor. A bit of nostalgia as this place was a drive in a zillion years ago when I was little. I know the Whistle Stop has been around for 30 years but it was my first time in. What a nice transformation! Excellent use of the space. Less creative folks would have just bulldozed the drive in but thankfully they've transformed it into a fun bar with delicious fish I can say for sure. The grouper sandwich was perfect as was the fish and chips. The fish spread was good as well. A great selection of truly local beers ontap and a full bar. I've been to Whistle Stop before and I will be happy to point out that not every restaurant is going to be on point every visit. We had a fine time. We were absolutely hungry and we got food. Last time we went, the food was significantly better, but this was fine. Service was good, although the kitchen was incredibly backed up. I should have stuck with bar food, but the seared ahi tuna salad sounded so good. It's rare that I don't love a meal, but this was one of those times. The tuna was fresh and fine, but the rest of the salad was dull and missing some items, and it just didn't hit the spot. Other meals at our table looked (and tasted) much better, including my husband's salad, so I know the food is good and won't negatively review over it. Next time will be better! read more

I visit Whistle Stop once or twice a month as I work in downtown Safety Harbor. The service is always great - especially the really friendly and accommodating lady with red hair (sorry I don't know her name). When my pup comes with me, the server always brings water for him right away and turns the portable AC unit his direction (he's a husky so he and I both appreciate the thoughtfulness). The tap menu is solid with several local craft options. The food is really delicious as well from the hummus, to the Salmon blt, to the steak sandwich. I also love the corn nuggets! Have gone here several times with and without our dog. We've used to love seeing the bands and have always loved that you can get a seat anywhere.. However, going to think twice about going next time. Before entry, we were told that dogs weren't allowed (even though we've had our puppy in several times). The host was a little snippy with us as well which was uncalled for. We are locals and have been coming here for several years. The new menu has changed for the better and we love the food. We went a week ago with out of town guests and we were absolutely disappointed in the service. This was saturday at 5:45pm and I mean the service was truly sad. After being quickly seated there was a looong wait to be even be acknowledged by the waitress. After initial drink order there was no interest getting our empty drinks refilled as we waited for our food. So we sat with empty drinks and waited for the waitress who never came by. So about the food. Someone who was not our waitress brings out our dinners and 1 entree is missing. She leaves the table without comment. We assume the missing entree is on its way so we wait, and wait, and wait. And guess who else never stopped by to check on our meals? yes the waitress. Couldn't even make eye contact with her. So we flag down the hostess and tell her we're missing a PBR Bowl entree and she goes to find the waitress. Wait another 5 very long minutes and the waitress brings out the PBR bowl and apologizes and rushes off again. Manager was standing around chit chatting with staff the whole time. When the check was dropped they had taken off the late entree but strangely the waitress never points this out to us. On a positive note, the food was great. read more

Pecan pie a favorite. Don't judge by the size and look of this old timey ice cream shop, the Whistle Stop serves quality, popular dishes. I stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner. I was alone and wasn't made to feel awkward, however I received a phone call from home so I decided to take out. Love the ambiance, the open air breeze. Enjoyed performance by musician Josh Plummer. Small parking lot; had to park several blocks away but didn't mind the walk on a comfortable evening. Server Mary Lou was excellent. Enjoyed the key lime pie and sangria but not my veggie bowl. The rice and black beans were fine, the grilled red peppers were excellent but there were very few of them; the few carrot slices were OK; most of the vegetables were green and yellow zucchini and there were bland and boring. Maybe that dish would be better with an added protein, but I felt it needed a tasty sauce. The only herb or spice I detected was salt. And a bigger variety of vegetables would have pleased me (Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, onions, broccoli?) Will definitely return because I love the ambiance, but will order something else. Stopped it today for a quick business lunch. The weather was perfect. A wonderful open air restaurant with a great Breeze blowing through. The atmosphere was relaxing and perfect for a business lunch. The menu had such a variety of choices that I had trouble deciding. I settled on the Taco shrimp Bowl! It was Fabulous. My Lunch partner ordered Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese with chicken she absolutely Loved it. Honestly we couldn't finish our food it both dishes were healthy portions. Everything I ordered tasted amazing. The blueberry margarita was spot on with taste. It wasn't too sweet and didn't have an overpowering taste of the tequila. The corn fritters and fried green tomatoes were perfectly fried. They didn't taste soggy as some places might. I feel like I'm full of 3 star reviews lately. Gotta be honest with my Yelpies though. I've visited here twice and enjoyed both times but I feel there is something lacking. I must say I really enjoy the staff. Everyone has been so friendly and it feels like they are family to each other which is refreshing. There's tons of menu options so likely something for everyone in your party.. The food I've tried were the famous Fried Green Tomatoes. Let me caveat this by saying I'm from Middle Georgia where the original Whistle Stop Cafe is that was featured in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. This ambiance is nothing like that and I don't think they're affiliated at all, which is odd to me. They're rendering of this dish is just not it. The tomatoes were tough, no seasoning on the batter whatsoever. They do have an upscale version that offers balsamic and goat cheese which may be better, but I'm not writing home about it. The hummus was freshly made and pretty decent. It's all covered outdoor seating and it's never been packed when I've been there but there's always local patrons at the bar. I actually don't even think they have music playing in the background which would add to the experience so much. Lots of room for improvement but I understand they're under new ownership/management. It's always fun going into Safety Harbor & trying new places. Our work staff decided to try Whistle Stop for lunch. It was crazy hot outside, but we dined outside with the help of a huge fan that kept us cool. I ordered a burger that came topped with a fried green tomato, & a side of onion rings. I requested the burger be cooked medium well, & it came out perfectly. The fried green tomato was good, but what really stood out for me was the burger. It tasted excellent, was decent size, & somehow was not dense. The meat was light & almost airy, & I don't know how they did that. Anyway it was a good meal, although the onion rings were dull & greasy. My only picky complaint was that even though prices everywhere are rising, the prices here seemed maybe an extra dollar too high. read more

Wonderful Time with a Long Wait! I've visited Whistle Stop many times over the years and have always enjoyed the food and ambiance. This previous visit was during Safety Harbor's 3rd Friday event (which I highly recommend if you love a night market) so the restaurant may have been a bit busier than before. I ordered the Fish Taco Bowl as well as a Wicked Tea for a drink. The bowl was a large portion (I couldn't even finish it) and was full of delicious flavors and ingredients. I got my fish grilled and it had an incredible spicy flavoring. Unfortunately, the drink wasn't very good, but they remade it for me and was excellent the second time (taste just like tea!) The wait took a lot longer than usual with other tables ordering after and receiving their meals before us, however it was possible it took us longer due to the items we chose. Overall, I love Whistle Stop and if you don't mind waiting a bit longer for your meal, you're going to have a delicious and delightful experience! read more

This place is very close to our home and it's under new ownership so we decided to check it out. Boy am I glad we did! Everything was five stars. My husband got the ribeye Philly hoagie. I got the shrimp po boy. Just look at the pictures! Lots of steak on his hoagie and my po boy was full of shrimp. We topped it off with a piece of salted carmel cheesecake. We sat at the bar. Bartenders very friendly. It was a beautiful night so weather enhanced everything. They also had open mic night so we had music on top of it all. Came here on a Sunday with three friends. They were not busy at all but when our food came, my one friend did not get his and the other two had stuff missing from their plates. I drink bourbon along with my friend. Both of the pours were very weak. I don't even think there was an ounce of bourbon in the drink. The waiter smelled heavily of weed and at one point said I don't even know where I am. When they picked up the plates to clear the table, he spilled cheese on my shirt and pants. I don't know if the owner knows what's going on with the staff, but if they continue to act the way, they acted the night we went. This restaurant will not stay in business. Poor customer service. Wasn't super busy, but it was impossible to get our servers attention. Waited an excessive amount of time to pay our tab. She made eye contact with us 3 times and saw the card was there to pay, but would never come to the table. Eventualy we had to get up and find our server to pay, and even then she tried to walk by as I was trying to hand the check to her to pay. Appetizer was good, even though small portion (fish dip).
