The negatives- The bathroom was tiny and outdated. I'd encourage the owners to spend a few pounds to replace the ancient hair dryers which burnt our hands and look at other options to modernise the loos. The owner, Doreen, was so kind and accommodating even in our email and telephone exchanges before we arrived. She was very welcoming once we got there and gave us helpful info and tips about the city as well. The B&B is a lovely townhouse, decorated very elegantly and kept clean and tidy. Our twin room was small, but very reasonable for an old Victorian city house. The high ceilings and nice furnishings made it quite comfortable. Breakfast was excellent - my friend and I agreed, the best bacon we've ever had! The dining room was decorated charmingly for Christmas and it was lovely to chat with Doreen in the mornings. We left early on our final morning, and Doreen arranged a cab for us the night before and left us a cold breakfast tray of fruit, yogurt, and pastries that helped us through our long train journey home. I'd recommend the Star Villa to anyone!

Several times I was going to be leaving very early prior to normal breakfast hours and owner had the cold (ie cereal or fruit or both) breakfast tray outside the room in the morning with my order. Cold milk, cereal, hot tea, sports drink, sandwich crackers, fruit, granola bars... most which went with me for nibbling during the day. Very accommodating. The room key doubled as an outer door key to get back in after hours.

We had a great afternoon tea at The Scotsman so with that in mind, my little gang of gluten free amigo's were long overdue a catch up, so I figured afternoon tea would be something different. After a debate on the price of booze, we opted for the Edinburgh Residence as it had the edge on the price of bubbles. I had heard a couple of positive stories about afternoon tea here - there was mention of a butler, old fashioned hospitality and an awesome afternoon tea (and a GF version available) so the consensus was to give it a shot. Big mistake. £17 to eat prepacked GF cake's from the supermarket (Waitrose, Sainsbury, Asda - insert appropriate supplier), bread was the 'not so good generic one' so sandwiches were dry. Either take the crusts off or leave them on - not a half and half as this looks like sloppy presentation. Curdled clotted cream (stomach wasn't happy later) and having to chase staff (although friendly enough) for tea, drinks, etc is not what afternoon tea should be about. Not what service in a supposed 5* hotel is meant to be either. There was also a 'mistake' over our drinks order. We ordered a bottle, got four glasses, told that was it. Given that I have champagne glasses which hold 1/4 bottle each, then these glasses were noticeably smaller than mine so there was no way four glasses had finished the bottle. Got another bottle and then when we asked for the remains of it, well over half a bottle appeared. We all suspected they were trying to charge us by the glass, rather than the 2 bottles we asked for. The prosecco was nice - just tasted a bit sour near the end over the 'errors'. So, maybe the normal afternoon tea is better but for the price and the experience then I have no plans to return, or to mention, 'I've heard the Edinburgh Residence is good...'

I stayed in a family room which we got at a reduced price because the room was quite outdated and due to be refurbished. The room was large and had a very comfy bed. The room had a great layout; the two single beds were further down the room and were separated by a curtain giving more privacy. Our deal included breakfast and I enjoyed the choice; fry-ups, toast, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and pastries. Unfortunately the croissants I had were warm on the outside and a tad soggy in the middle. Breakfast was good but the quality wasn't amazing. At night, you could buy a drink at the bar and sit beside the cosy fire on comfy sofas and chairs which made the hotel a winner in my eyes as I hate being stuck in a hotel room all night. Gin lovers will be happy to know that they have a huge list of gins - there's a little greenhouse in the bar area where they show all the gins they have on offer. Outside the hotel, they had chickens and a bee hive as well as an outdoor giant chess board and small golf area. In the hotel, they have a kids play group and you can hire bikes. If the quality of breakfast had been better, I would've given it 5 stars.
