Food and service was great! I had deliciously spiced Mantu and Bolani. Highly recommended.

We arrived a little after 6:00 on a Friday and didn't have to wait, but it was jam packed half an hour later. We just told them3 people and sat down and they brought us food. Salad, rice with chicken & lamb kebab and butter chicken (drumsticks) all incredibly delicious. Mostly Afghan clientele but everyone was warm and friendly, chef called all the men "brother." Wow what a great restaurant. I called them to ask if they had Afghan specialties such as Aushak or Mantu. Someone answered the phone, I asked my question and he answered me in a heavily thick Afghan accent yes we are open and hung up. I found that funny. My hotel check in clerk recommended this restaurant to me and said it was delicious. I got to the restaurant and it was jammed packed. I was looking at the menu on the wall and someone waiting for carry out said to me "you have to ask the cook what he has tonight". The menu is never updated. There is only the cook and a cashier/assistant working in the restaurant. So I approached the cook who was working furiously in an open kitchen in the same area as the dine in tables, carry out waiting area and cashier. There were about 20 people sitting at communal tables and when a dish was ready for the seated guests the cook would just hand the dish to the nearest customer waiting for carry out or to pay at the cash register and asked them to take to "that table". He was working furiously and had not yet noticed me standing in front of him. He was doing about six carry out containers at once with rice, one chicken kebab and one ground meat kebab with a side of salad. He looked up and started giving people their carry out orders and each was 20 NZ dollars or about 14.50 US (per person). All the time smiling and greeting everyone with hellos and goodbyes unless you were Muslim then it was assalamualaikum (peace be unto you). I told him I will have that same dish and he assembled it on the spot and added another container and said this is free. I was hoping that was Afghan bread. I paid my 20 dollars and left. The food was some of the best Afghan food I have ever had. I lived in Afghanistan for awhile and have eaten Afghan food in many other countries. The ground meat kebab was lamb, it was moist and had all the right spices, superb! The chicken kebab was marinated in a red yogurt spice which resembled red Tika but tasted better. The rice was divine and the extra container was a butter style curry chicken with two chicken legs that was spicy hot. It was the best butter chicken I have ever had. I had no room for the salad so it went uneaten. If I go back to NZ I will make a side trip just to eat here. All portions were huge. read more
