This clock has been around since 1878, when it was originally on Commerce St. but was moved to this location in 1910 when the Eli Hertzberg Jewelry Co moved to Houston Street. Zales bought out Hertzberg, and the store was eventually closed. Someone once told me that this clock is so old that it has to be wound by hand, and isn't even electrified. The roman numerals are easy on the eyes, and the time is usually accurate.

He came to San Antonio with his car the day before he went on to Dallas that fateful day in November '63. The moment was immortalized in this big brass plaque. It's really cool how they engraved the brass with a photograph of the President driving by Cambridge Elementary on Broadway, and all the smiling kids. So the Alamo Heights High School class of 1971 got together and raised some money for this memorial to that moment. They juxtapose the range of emotions for Alamo Heights in those twenty-four hours, from pride, excitement, and hopefulness, to grief the following day. It's a cool idea for a monument! The kids pictured waving at the president are a lot of the class of '71 who paid for the monument, I believe. I'm not really quite sure what's going on with the Legos on sticks in a bucket are, but it's artistic.

The day before, JFK, Jackie, and the Connallys spent an idyllic day in San Antonio, including a drive down Broadway past Cambridge Elementary in Alamo Heights. This monument, dedicated in 2019, captures that moment. Take a moment to pause on the sidewalk and look at the images of children, some of whom felt like the President was smiling and waving just at them in particular.

Logistics. Best times to go are evenings and weekends when it's easier to find parking on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word. Suggestions: park near the Natatorium and cross the river on a footbridge. Or, park near the Student Engagement Center. The path to the Blue Hole takes you past a sand volleyball court. Turn left into a wooded area, and you'll see a low stone wall encircling the spring. Sometimes the spring is dry, and sometimes it is flowing freely. Before you visit, check water level of the Edwards Aquifer. When these pictures were taken, the J-17 well was at 672' and rising. When the spring is flowing, the water surges up through cracks in the limestone and spills out into the muddy, leafy riverbed. Small fish dart around in the water. The spring is a small and humble place compared to the river as it goes through the artsy Museum Reach, the famous Riverwalk, the naturalistic Mission Reach, and beyond. Nevertheless, the Blue Hole has a sacred feeling. There is a bench nearby inscribed with the dictum, "Be still and know."

Today was the first time in 11 years I've visited it and I was lucky enough to see it teaming with water and tiny little fish nipping at things. Thanks to all the recent rain, the headwaters seem to have awoken and the natural spring began to flow. It looks different from the water in the river in the middle of the campus, looking clearer, cooler, and more inviting to stick your feet in (please don't). In fact, when I graduated, my dad filled an empty plastic water bottle from the spring and to this day it sits on a shelf in their living room. The water is crystal clear and looks drinkable. (again, please don't) The area is kept relatively clean with little to no litter surrounding the wall of the spring or immediate areas of the headwaters. A bench nearby is inscribed with "Be still and know," which wasn't there 11 years ago, but is still a nice touch to sit, ponder, meditate, and reflect. One of the more secluded spots, the sand volleyball court is probably the closest thing you'll catch a glimpse of. It's not too far within the woods where it's scary, but just far enough from the hustle and bustle of campus life.

Toribio Losoya was a member of the Mexican Army when he deserted and joined the Texan rebels. He was killed defending the Alamo, and his body was burnt in the mass funeral pyres. This eye catching bronze statue was given to the people of San Antonio by the Adolph Coors Company in 1988. You'll see a wall marker near the statue that reads: "Toribio Losoya / An Unsung Hero of the Alamo / On March 6, 1836, Toribio Losoya died defending the Alamo, his birthplace and home. Rebelling against the government of Santa Anna for overruling the Mexican constitution of 1824, Losoya and other Hispanic Texans chose to take their stand at the Alamo and fight alongside Travis, Crockett, and Bowie. / This sesqicentennial gift to the people of San Antonio and Texas was commissioned and donated on November 30, 1986 by the Adolph Coors Company. / William Easley - Sculptor".

Don't mess with Texas! This monument to Toribio Losoya memorializes the Alamo hero who was a member of the Mexican Army, until he decided he wasn't going to take it anymore, and switched to the Texan side. He died defending the Alamo for Texas independence. With his gun cocked and ready he looks like he's about to start rockin' some musket balls to the craniums of haters of Texas liberty. Each column have different artist. Some funny, some religious, some scientific, and some artistic. The murals are nice to look at. If you dine around here you can enjoy the mural while having a meal.

In this parking area situated under the freeway, you'll find examples of most of San Antonio's most talented mural artists. Each artist was given a support strut to paint, so there's no cohesive theme per se. It's just a wild array of different styles of art on the supports that are, like, twenty feet tall. Super Instagrammable! Look out for the works by Nik Soupe and Robert Tatum! Cool stuff! The art "gallery" is right down the street from the San Antonio Museum of Art, which is a cool add on to this trip. You can see some other murals by one of the artists, Soupe down the way at the San Antonio Current building, on N St Marys down the street. It's in the middle of a parking lot, so of course, parking is easy. It's right next to Ceverezeria Chipultapec, which is an artsy restaurant/cantina, so it's a nice combo.

Charles Court is a beautiful little alleyway between Zinc and The Davenport that serves as a nice…read morelittle place to dodge out of the South Texas heat for a bit. Charles Court is an old dead-end service alley that was for the buildings facing Commerce and Presa. One end of the Court is the old Alamo Bank Building. It's a cozy place to relax in the beautifully landscaped courtyard, furnished with a fountain and plenty of places to sit and watch the traffic go by. It also serves Zinc's outside patio on one side, so if you sit by the restaurant, they're going to want to serve you. Zinc's a good place- check out their burgers. It also serves as a good place to dodge out of The Davenport and get some air and quiet. I don't think you technically need to be a patron of either business to enjoy this little place. Just be respectful and quiet in here. Those are people's offices and homes overlooking the courtyard.

Designed in a gothic revival style, this 8-sided landmark, 30 floors high used to be San Antonio's tallest building for nearly 60 years. It recently changed the owners and will be going thru extensive renovation which will include replacing retail with 234 new residences and a restaurant on the ground level.

The gargoyle's faces along the top floors are supposed to be the faces made by the building's owner as he flung himself off of the top floor on the way down to splat on what is now the Riverwalk. It was the tallest building in San Antonio for over thirty years. It has a unique octagonal shape to the building, and has a mix of brick and terra cotta details. It's a great old building!
