There just wasn't a lot to do at this year's Luminaria. I have been a couple of times in the past…read moreand had a great time. There just wasn't a lot to experience this year. Totally not impressed. There was one spot for beer, and they weren't very adventurous on the food items. They had chicken or beef kebabs for $10, some gorditas, and hot pretzels, but not a whole lot more. We got there early and went into one of the venues to watch an awesome local band called Slowpoke who had two guest violinists, and a cellist. They were really great, and it was the highlight of the evening. When we emerged however, Hemisfair Park was PACKED to the hilt with people. The food and drink booths took credit cards, so that was a huge plus. I'm going to take a pass on Luminaria or the next few years in hopes that they improve.

St Mary Street is a mural center in San Antonio. Definitely a must stop place and enjoy the food…read moresurrounding. This greeting is located at French Place and St Mary Street. The sign is popular. Many come to here to get a shot that they have visited San Antonio. Along the St Mary Street, you can find cowboy riding armadillo, Beastie Boy, let fiesta, king portrait, raven, guitar men, and more mural. It is definitely a street to visit. And don't forget to visit the St Mar Street below I-35. The pillars are mural by various artists.

such a great mural if your visiting san Antonio area. i do try to remember and make it a habit…read morethese days where ever i go i try to find a mural of that city and take a picture, this is one of them that i have been able to visit with my kids. this mural is right on the main road with occasional traffic, its kind of a bit hard if you want a straight picture being its not much sidewalk, you would have to somehow go on the street to get a good shot with the family or friends. but i dont recommend you doing that be safe doing so. the area as some really narrow streets with cute little homes and few places to eat and drink and its only few minutes away by car from downtown. if your into art this a good spot to see along with other murals painted around the area.

The lights are beautiful ranging from neon (bright) colors to mellow colors. The architecture design is beautiful as well. St.Paul's Square has benches, walls, a staircase and steps to take pictures near by.

Such a cool gateway into downtown San Antonio! This…read morepicturesque bridge underpass has been transformed by the talented artist, Bill Fitzgibbons. The artist made cool perforated metal light covers and LED lights that change color along the underside of the bridge. It's a great way to get into the downtown area- the lights do all kinds of cool patterns, designs, and an ever-changing display. Commerce St. is a one-way street, and it prevents traffic from going up Commerce on the other side of the highway that divides downtown from downtown's east side. Once you cross through the display of color, you enter into the St. Paul Square area where the Alamodome is, and some fun restaurants and bars. The artwork invites pedestrians to cross across the natural barrier of Highway 281/37- it's a cool revitalization idea to bring back the entirety of the downtown area. This display of color only goes at night, but the cool fixtures are still cool to look at during the daytime.

Tile mural by Jesse Trevino! This large scale mosaic is on…read morethe side of the Goodwill building. It replaces a former mural and depicts the mural being recreated by Goodwill employees, all working together for the greater good. It's kind of a meta mosaic; a mosaic recreation of another work, being recreated in the work. Jesse Trevino is an epic San Antonio artist. If you look close by to this mural, you'll see his mosaic of an angel with a broken wing at the Santa Rosa Christus children's hospital behind you. Then there's the world's largest religious votive candle on the other side of the highway from here. Jesse Trevino is a Vietnam War disabled Veteran and uses this city as inspiration for a prolific art career. This is a cool place to hang out in front of the Goodwill. All the buildings around here are cool and old, and they open up onto a little plaza that overlooks Market Square and Milam Park across the busy intersection. If you're gearing up for Fiesta, hanging out at this mural for a few before heading into Fiesta de los Reyes at Market Square is crucial.

Site of San Antonio's first Catholic Mass! This spot is now…read moreon what's known as Marriage Island in the San Antonio Riverwalk. If you look at the island from above, and kinda squint your eyes, it looks sort of like a heart. People reserve this island months in advance to get married on it. You can go down the riverwalk a bit and put the lock on the fence and throw the key in the river like is tradition around here. This table isn't much to see- it's a metal table that you could put a Bible on. It's a pretty part of the river, but the table isn't the original table that Padre Damien read off of. I'm sure that table is long, long gone. This one is a fancy ornate iron. It's hard to miss. You could put your comic books on there instead of a Bible if you were so inclined. It's not difficult getting to the island, you gotta do it from the Riverwalk, and you might have some luck getting down to it by way of the Westin, which this is right in front of. They no longer hold Catholic mass here.

A larger-than-life figure of a boy is pulling on a rope connected to a crescent moon made of stainless steel butterflies. The sculpture draws attention to the Greenline, which is s fun park but under-used. It will be fun to come back in the evening and see the sculpture lit up.

Such a cool sculpture! This public work of art on Brooks…read moreCity Base is a wonderful statue! It was built by Brad Oldham to beautify a public park with an outdoor amphitheater. The statue is all chromed out, with a kid pulling a rope, like he's flying a kite made of butterflies in the shape of a crescent moon. Interesting! The butterfly moon is cantilevered over the water, so it looks perilously perched on the edge of the pond, as if to defy gravity. It's as if the boy running with the kite string is the local individual, striving to drive into what the future holds, and the crescent moon is the community rising up behind him. Moving! Please don't climb on it.

Always Dreamin'! Local artist, Cruz Ortiz created this tall…read moretower that overlooks the freeway and welcomes you to the south side. The tower gives a shout out to South Texas Tejano music legend, Selena! Viva Selena! Anything for Selenas... There's also other symbols of local things on the sides of the tower that makes it a homage to the south side- depicting tall tales, animals and other cultural items. The stars spin in the wind, and the whole thing is illuminated. It's a really cool public work of art! This tower sits 60 feet high on the corner of IH 35 South and Zarzamora on the south side of San Antonio. Cruz Ortiz is one of SA's most popular and prolific artists. He runs the Snakehawk Press that prints up political, and locally-themed posters on his screen printer. He's often at local events printing up bandannas and t-shirts.

It looks GHETTO asf, it's a waste of money, and to say it is a Selena memorial is truly disrespectful as Selena was a beautiful person with a beautiful voice and fans and this metal pile of trash does NOT reflect anything positive about the late tejano singer. I laugh everytime I drive by it. It's so ugly.

A bit underwhelming…read more When I visited Grotto, I was a little disappointed. The Grotto is a small section of the Riverwalk that is designed as a man-made rock grotto. You can walk under the cave to view a waterfall and fountain. I am not sure if it was construction or a poorly built safety rail, but the pathway surrounding the installation was lined with cheap-looking PVC pipes and buckets filled with concrete. It really took away from the art installation. The photos really make the Grotto seem larger and more robust than it actually is. Once you walk under it, the main attraction (the face and fountain) is actually quite small. I would only really visit if you're in the Pearl-Midtown area, otherwise I would not recommend going out of your way to see it.
