I was happy to pay the Albion a visit with some fellow Yelpers after a recent event that we attended nearby. I love facade of this place when you approach. The old style and a certain grandness gives a clue of what is within. It is not that much off the beaten track, but when you are there, you do not really feel as though you are in this part of town. Drinks are pretty pricey, however they did have a well stocked bar. And that's good. Staff were friendly and served us in a timely manner. The garden was busy but the inside of the pub was almost completely empty, as was the restaurant. I would enjoy returning here for food, as the menu looked good. We all gathered on a large table in the beer garden and enjoyed the company in great surroundings. What's not to like? Well, I have two admit that the outside areas both front and back of the best aspects of assets of the Albion. Whereas the interior, including the tables chairs and decor, reminds me very much of an old-fashioned British sea front hotel - the only thing that was missing was the smell of old people! read more

It has the potential to be a great pub but everything has been organised so poorly. Beautiful garden and setting, not too pricey and the food looked good. However, it wasn't a very busy evening and there were only 3 guys behind the bar. Two of them working incredibly slowly without any hurry to serve people. The 3rd guy was polishing glasses pretentiously while the queue built up and up. I had to wait for 20 minutes to buy a pint when there wasn't even a big queue. Throughout the evening we were moved from the garden to tables inside then to stand by the bar then out all incredibly abruptly. Some of the worst customer service I've had in a while. I do think it could be a great pub, it just needs some proper management which motivates staff and has a plan for how to serve customers when there's more than 10 people in the place. read more

I love a pub with a pretty back garden. I had been wanting to go here for ages, but considering it is a little bit out of the way and one can never count on the weather, it hadn't happened. Occasion finally arose when, after the Yelp GBK event in Angel, the sun was still shining on a midsummer evening and we were looking for a place to grab a pint outdoors. The Albion is in a beautiful tree-lined residential area, and it pretty much fit the bill 100%. We didn't get to try the food whist there, as the week we were there, they were remodelling the kitchen. Given it was a sunny weeknight, there were still plenty of tables out back that were free, though I can imagine the place gets busy on a sunny weekend. Outdoor drinking near Angel? TRIPLE FRIED CHIPS. OMG. They were really good. I like the neighborhood low-key feel and the dog-friendly policy. The decor is beautiful and there are separate rooms with comfy chairs. i had a peek in at the garden and now I see why all the hype. We were in the dining room, and I must say I enjoyed the fish cake, the deliciously dressed side salad, the chips, the good espresso and the mango ice cream. I think the food is really good, although the steaks are outrageously expensive. The thing that was lacking was the service. Not very attentive which was really disappointing. read more

This place has great ambiance for a slightly nicer pub dinner. It is super comfortable to just be here and have a casual evening with friends. The food, though, is not the best. It's pretty standard pub food, but somehow leaves me disappointed. There are other pub restaurants nearby that taste fresher and more interesting. Gastropub, as I've long said to anyone who'll listen - and shouted at anyone who won't - is a word of two halves. Er, Brian. There's equal emphasis, therefore, on the gastro element and the pub bit. Simple no? But amazing how many get it wrong. The Albion, while flawed, does at least get the balance right. If you want to eat, the food is great. If you want to drink, the ambience is proper, smart pub. Having paid £4+ for Leffe in many spots and with £3.50 being a pretty standard pint price these days, I don't really understand that gripe but I'm with Sir Eamon of Qype in terms of speed. Service here can be a little intermittent, he says, politely. But, while the timing of wine and meal in that instance is completely unforgivable, having to wait a few minutes longer than anticipated for an excellent half dozen oysters and a very good, nicely herbed fish pie isn't a terrible price, particularly when the Black Sheep is kept this well. If you're looking for a boozer, head elsewhere. If you're thinking of nestling in for a few hours for a very pleasant culinary and boozy experience, I'd rather be here than anywhere else in the area. read more

A lovely sunny evening al fresco at the Albion yesterday, the garden is so beautiful and we had some tables booked for a friend's birthday, we were the last ones to leave braving the wind until the end! Nice atmosphere and attentive staff, portions a bit too small for the price but I was told that this place used to be a bit shabby so I guess we are paying for the better decor and furniture! There was one stroppy lady at the bar who obviously doesn't like her job or people in general but that didn't spoil the fun. read more

After some digging around on Yelp, I picked Albion for my first ever Sunday roast in London. For a semi-tourist, it was rather out of the way, but the house was very cute, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I got a glimpse of the beer garden, and I could imagine how glorious it would be come summer time. I was very glad we made reservations as it was packed at 3:30, and the tables were all taken by large groups of friends and families. I really don't think we could have been able to dine here if we didn't, and even with reservation, we still had to wait a little. The staff was very nice about it though, so I didn't hold it against them. It was St. Patrick's day after all. Sticking to our goal of getting a traditional Sunday roast, that was exactly what we ordered, along with the braised pork cheek for appetizer and the triple fried fries as sides. First, the pork cheek was very nice and tender. The sauce was terrific, but I suppose it is on the pricey side for just 4 small pieces of meat. Next, the roast beef was very tender and well cooked, but it didn't have much flavour, and was under-seasoned (I had to add salt). It also wasn't very hot when it arrived. The fried whole potatoes that came with the main was alright, but the triple cooked fries were amazing! All in all, I liked the Albion, but the main star of the meal - the roast beef - was slightly lacking. read more

Once upon a time, there was pub in Islington with a big beautiful back garden for all the friendly smokers in the world, who just wanted to enjoy a nice pint and good food with their friends. The ivy cascaded around them, and people would often look around themselves thinking, this is home. Then that all changed and the Albion suddenly decided it wanted to go upmarket. But the only thing it effectively did was raise its prices. The food was no better, if not worse because everybody felt cheated by the price. The decor was soulless. The pub was ruined. I haven't been for about a year so hopefully things have turned around. When i cycle past it always looks busy - so maybe they have improved the situation. If not, they need to sort out their identity crisis. read more

We booked to go for a Sunday roast because we'd heard great things. It's lovely inside, with the well-to-do crowd that you'd expect for the neighbourhood. Well the roast was amazing, meat cooked to perfection. I had the pork belly and it was delish, others had lamb and beef and both were cooked to tender medium-rare perfection. Kale was a nice touch and the huge yorkshires (for 75p extra) did the trick. The potatoes were a disappointment - not cooked fully. The dessert was decent, we had the chocolate tart and the creme brulee. All-in-all the food was as good as you would expect when you are paying 15-20 quid for a main! The one thing that let them down was the service was VERY slow - yes we get that the place was busy - but as you have to book, well, they should've prepared for the busy-ness by putting on more staff! The icing on the cake of a nice afternoon was the very cute little puppies that people had brought along. Definitely would come back if I was in search of a delicious roast (with puppies) and had some money to burn! read more

As a new mum (to a 6 week old), I arguably need more drinks than the average pub patron. The Albion was an exceptionally accommodating locale for such desires, it seems. Upon arrival on a rainy Thursday afternoon, I discovered not just my friend and fellow new mum waiting, but three separate groups of new mums accompanied by their massive prams and sleeping babes. The Albion was a cozy, spacious and welcoming watering hole for us, making cocktails off menu and extending the kitchen hours to make us some comfort food. Seek out this gastropub hidden among the streets of Islington!! The service was very good and prompt. There is an excellent atmosphere and the food was high quality and fairly priced. I had a pork chop which was high quality, nice and thick but I've had better. I had the best chips (french fries) ever here. Ever. They are twice fried and as a result become crispy jewels to eat. The towering oak in the outdoor area and both humble and effortlessly cool surroundings - you'd never think you were five minutes walk away from one of London's busiest highstreets. I went to eat at the Albion last night with a party of 10 and was shocked at how poor the service was. Our food took over an hour to come, which was ridiculous as we were all having steaks or burgers. When it did come, it came out in drips and drabs, with staff needing repetitive reminders about what was missing. The food was not cooked to order (steaks were all under done). The staff were rude and confrontational. I didn't think that things could get any worse, but I bit into a stone that had made its way into my spinach, which really capped things off! It's such as shame, as the Albion has a lot of charm and could be an amazing place if they got their service right. It's a lovely country pub to look at, as the horses trot by, in inner city London. I like it inside and out with the afternoon sun out front and the large garden of tables and bar out back. Lovely couch to sup red wine on. Just wish the staff would be more friendly, been going here for years because I like the Georgian architecture and it's handy. The food is ok, hit and miss which hurts because it's not cheap. Sometimes over priced for what you get. The owner was complaining about the kids wasting 25p worth of straws, I should have complained that being only 1 of 4 customers in the entire place at the time, the £8 duck livers should not have tasted like a school eraser! Still one is always grateful for the couch, the scotch eggs with usually runny centres and ever so grateful when a member of staff actually smiles! I had the chicken, as I was in the mood for something light. The place is lovely,with an outdoor area that no doubt gets busy when the sun comes out. Friendly staff, tasty food, sound menu. This is a pretty pub with a nice garden at the back. The food is very good BUT it has possibility the worst management and staff I have ever come across. Upon arrival the assistant manager (I made sure to find out his role there) could not find my booking. He just left me standing for 5 mins while he struggled with his computer. Eventually someone helped him and he found it. No apology for keeping me waiting. He walked me to the table and said I need the table back in an hour and a half. Then the servers are appalling, disinterested and it was very hard to get there attention.No friendliness at all. The staff need to be retrained and the Ass. in my opinion this place relies solely on the beautiful location and affluent local clientele. the garden is lovely too. in fact I take part of the above back, the food coming from the kitchen is excellent. the sea bass was very well cooked. the burger tasted great, as did the triple cooked chips. i also heard the steak was superb, although overcooked at first and then under cooked as they rushed to replace it. the food stopped me giving it 1 star. sadly the service is awful, bordering on rude. the staff are aloof and pretty miserable from what I saw. the management didn't seem to care if our group were happy or not. asking us to move, and generally giving us the impression they were doing us a favour in serving us. to top it off at 5pm on a Friday they turned their beer taps off for maintenance. shoddy. avoid. read more

This place is not as impressive as it thinks it is. The garden is lovely on a sunny day, but the staff are rude and unhelpful. Also, we were told we couldn't eat because everything was reserved, but then sat at a reserved table for 2 hours with no one showing up. When we suggested we'd be happy to eat at one of the many empty inside tables, we were told that the outside clientele would be forced to move inside soon as it was nearly 9pm (???? - seriously, they were going to up and move a garden full of tipsy diners. not likely). The Albion is a great little pub in Islington serving excellent and a good sized beer garden. I have never experienced bad service at this traditional pub although I think some of the prices could be slightly lower. I recommend going in the Summer as it probably has one of the best pub gardens in London. If you're not home eating your mum's Sunday roast, this is potentially a good shout. The pub itself is surrounded by residences so it feels like a neighborhood gem. The ambience is divine, the dim, flickering lights and old, wooden walls make you yearn for the ye olde days of yore (even if you're only 22 and don't really know what that means). The roasts themselves are very solid - certainly not better than homemade but comforting and hearty just the same. I will say the chicken was a bit dry and the sirloin quite tough, but they were tasty and the accompanying sides were incredible enough to almost make up for it. My friends and I had a great meal here when we were in London. The pub itself is charming, and the food and service were great as well. We originally had a reservation for 5 people at 8pm on a Friday night, and had to change it to 4 at 9pm, but they were very gracious about it and it wasn't a problem at all (which was much appreciated since I was expecting to be treated like an annoying tourist). I had a smashed pea/broad bean & crumbled goat cheese crostini to start with, and a rump steak with garlic butter. Both were fantastic. Everyone else loved their food as well--the lamb, grilled fish, and desserts were all excellent. If I lived in London I'd come here often, but I'll at least make it a point to come back the next time I'm there. read more

Had a very tasty Sunday lunch here today. As a group we had the whole roast chicken, the beef and the pork. All were great although the amount of chicken per person vastly exceeded what you get with the beef and the pork. The kale and carrots that came with each were also very nice. I couldn't eat any of the potatoes as I'm not a massive potato fan and I was too full of chicken. We had a bottle of the house wine (its branded as the Albion's own house wine) which was tasty and reasonably priced at £16 read more

Delish! I came here recently for dinner and fell in love with the rustic charm of the place. The menu is decent and they could easily cater for gluten free (though it wasn't marked on the menu.) I had the chicken and it was perfectly cooked. The waiter was polite and attentive and I was really impressed with the overall service. I will be back. read more

The Albion used to be a great homely pub in the leafy village of Barnsbury, which served reasonably priced food and very good Sunday lunches. But a change of management and make-over a few years ago has left this place short of average. The light blue decor appears cold, and the overall look reminds one more of Scandinavia than a good local English pub. Just like the interior, the food appears to be all style over substance, as portion sizes are very small and prices are high. The biggest shock, however, was the presence of bouncers one Sunday lunchtime, who politely told us that there were no tables free and that we would have to wait outside until one became available management certainly doesn't want pub customers to stand up here! It is such a shame to have seen the changes made to this place, especially since the garden at the back and seating in front are definitely worth enjoying on a warm summer's day (and worth at least 4 stars!). read more

For a pub, this place is wildly expensive. For a restaurant, the food is decent (but not special). If the weather is good, there are enormous queues to get served. It is a real shame as the location is great and there's lots of pleasant outside space. I have detected signs of it improving recently, with staff a bit faster and shorter waits. They were super fast one Sunday when we were in a rush to get home and watch the football (no TV here, which is fine). So, it is worth going along to try. If the place is rammed then walk 5 mins south to the Crown - much less busy. read more
