My 90-year-old mother was hospitalized following an acute respiratory event, and as you can imagine, this has been an extremely stressful and concerning time for our family. Throughout her hospitalization, the majority of the nursing staff were compassionate, attentive, professional, and genuinely caring. I want to make a point of acknowledging that. Their kindness and professionalism were greatly appreciated, particularly under the circumstances. Unfortunately, my experience with the charge nurse was very different. I approached him simply to ask a brief question. Rather than responding in a courteous manner or indicating that he would be with me shortly, he told me, in what I found to be a dismissive and disrespectful tone, and in front of the nursing staff, that I needed to wait until he had finished updating an incoming nurse for her shift. I completely understand that a charge nurse has important responsibilities during a shift change and that giving report to an incoming nurse requires his attention. My concern was not that he needed to finish his report. My concern was the manner in which he communicated that to me. I was extremely embarrassed and uncomfortable being spoken to in that manner in front of the nursing staff. More importantly, I found the interaction particularly disappointing because this individual is now in a leadership position. A person serving as a charge nurse is not only responsible for clinical and operational matters; he is also representing the hospital's leadership and its culture to patients and their families and is also responsible for being a culture carrier for the institution. What makes this experience especially disappointing is that I had a very different experience with this same individual approximately four years ago, when he was a staff nurse. At that time, he was exceptionally accommodating, and I was sufficiently impressed with his professionalism that I actually took the time to write a commendation recognizing him for outstanding performance in care. That is why the contrast in his behavior now is so striking to me. I would expect that advancement into a leadership position would bring an even greater awareness of the importance of professionalism, empathy, communication, and respect--particularly when interacting with families who are already under considerable emotional stress. NewYork-Presbyterian's own Respect Credo emphasizes that "Every Person Counts," along with "Exceptional Quality and Service" and "Listen, Understand and Respond." I believe those principles should be particularly evident in the conduct of those entrusted with nursing leadership. read more

My brother has a terrible experience here which need be known. He went in with what was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia and RSV. He wanted to use the bathroom but since he has cataracts he needed our help, the nurse and myself. But it was a little challenging and the nurse became impatient and rushed him back to the bed without his using the bathroom. Then she put a diaper on him and a penile catheter and left him this was for the weeks he was there. He stopped eating and they sent him back to the nursing home after his respiratory infection was resolved. From this experience, he stopped using the bathroom permanently and six weeks later is still using the diaper. He also stopped eating to the point he needed to be rushed back to another hospital, NY Presbyterian where he regained his eating. We're still working on his using the bathroom. read more

Well to my extreme surprise they disappointed me by giving my daughter tons of medication and never came to the real problem with her back. We had already been to two urgent cares who didn't do well by her. No one really took a look or exam her back. Today we visited a doctor, which is days later we find out that she has a compressed fractured back - I'm so irritated that your facility filled her up with tons of medication and told her because it didn't help that you couldn't give you anymore - instead of looking deeper into what was really going on with her back - ugh. For shame. Please, please do better. People deserve better treatment when they come to the dr. we can't diagnose ourselves that is why we come to you for help. Thanks read more

This was the hospital where my Mommy used to come for most of her doctors appointments, they always provided great care and treated her with the utmost respect. As I shared with you all she was 86 and was the greatest mom on this planet. In her last days Doctor Darmanian made special arrangements so that I could spend every last second with Mommy in which I did. Im so truly grateful because my mommy was not alone when she took her last breath. Also the entire security staff made sure that there were no issues with my family seeing my mom to say their final goodbyes, they were truly professional, and compassionate.. So to everyone in the Allen pavilion thank you for the outstanding care you provided to my mommy. I will forever be grateful to know you guys did your best. The ER at the Allen Pavilion is a place out of hell! The last time I took my husband there, he slept in the hallway with several other patients. it was horrible！The nurses were rude and unfriendly and unprofessional. Three days later, he was put into a small claustrophobic room. The doctors were poorly trained and not very smart with names that were unpronounceable. We saw them once in a while if we were lucky. Where on earth did the hospital find these doctors? Most of the nurses were loud and not at all professional. I felt my husband was poorly treated, and ignored. Something was amiss at that hospital that I could not understand. Now, just passing by makes me feel sick. A despicable place. My husband spent 2 weeks there and was gravely sick. They sent him home .He looked horrible, like a ghost. He died the next day. An awful hospital. read more

I just underwent a colonoscopy at the Allen under the care of Dr. Spencer Amory. I was so impressed by the professional and warm care that I received from everyone in the hospital and especially by Iole Paz, who was with me much of the time. Every person who I encountered, whether it was an anesthesiologist or a check in staff or nurse was caring and polite. Everyone introduced themselves and I really felt like I was in such good hands. Getting a colonoscopy is a nasty experience from beginning to end, but the staff made this be as pleasant as possible. I gave birth here 2 weeks ago and I must say that my experience was better than expected. This was my 4th child but my first time giving birth at this hospital. The staff here took care of me and had the best bedside manners from the moment I stepped into labor & delivery. I was scheduled to be induced on the 1st of March because of GD but was sent to L&D immediately after my appointment on 2/26 due to a high blood pressure reading. Honestly, I was scared as idk what to deliver here because I knew nothing about this hospital except that I had a few sonograms here. Every single nurse/doctor and all of the staff that I encountered was pleasant and extremely helpful. The woman at the front desk even taped my id back together for me because I cracked it on my way to the hospital rushing. Just going out of their way for me! I was extremely appreciative and comfortable. My delivery was smooth as ever. Everyone in the room was so helpful and supportive and just did their job with a smile on their face. Even when I got upstairs into a room the staff up there was amazing as well. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd recommend anyone to deliver here. read more

After my uncle cought a mini stroke on mothers day. This place deserves a 5 star. At about 11pm we called the ambulance and less then 5 minutes they were here. They asked him a few question, and from there they took him in after checking his pulse. Only 2 people were able to get in the ambulance. So we went after and the service was right. Every one got treated nice. The place is very clean this has to be the best hospital service i have ever been too. The next day i passed buy in the afternoon and got treated right. Front desk was very respectful and gave me the right direction to get to the room. This place will make u feel safe with the service and the care. This Hospital has some rude Employees. They don't communicate among each other, especially on shift change. Rooms aren't comfortable at all, run down. Don't know why they don't let one family member to stay, During and after birth. I signed the birth certificate and they gave me another paper to sign, told me it wasn't "mandatory". Yet they calling the mother of my new born couple days later telling us we need to come in asap and forcing me to sign documents. I have no good reviews about this place. Starting with the ER waiting area. I understand how this was critical during covid. But to have people who accompany the sick, a family member because they don't speak English, taken out of the waiting area because you can't wait it terrible customer service. As I brought my sister to the ER, I helped her register. They took her in to triage her, they were going to do an EKG. The waiting room was literally empty, just one person sitting. This security officer kept insisting that those who aren't patients need to wait outside. Mind you, the wait area is empty. There's a storm outside. Again, I understand if the waiting area was full of patients but it wasn't. They made an elderly person and myself wait outside in the rain. I'm not sure who is handling or managing this place but they're doing it wrong. Three security guards and only the one was insisting on people to wait outside. Unbelievable. If you value your life and well being, DO NOT have surgery at Allen Hospital. I went in for a double lumbar fusion. They were forewarned I have epilepsy and a brain injury. After 2 days they felt I was sleeping too much. On day 3 they removed 2 of my regular meds, lowered a 3rd, and drastically reduced my pain meds to an intolerable level. I begged them to increase the pain meds. My whole body was shaking. On day 4, I had a Grand Mal seizure. I called the PA when I woke. She asked if I had any emergency meds. I took 1. They then confiscated my meds and didn't give me any more. Didn't call in a neurologist or ENT and my eardrum ruptured and blood was coming out. 2 nights later I had a 2nd seizure. I started screaming he'll and demanded to see an acute care pain mgmt md. He came in, head in hand. I demanded they return my regular meds and thar they call my pain mgmt md. Suddenly, they tripled my pain meds based on my personal md instructions. Day after I got out I went to see my Epilepsy md who immediately sent me to my regular ER due to my bloody ear. Gave me antibiotics and urgent ENT referral. Allen Hospital sent me letters saying how they gave me great quality of care carefully omitted the seizure, withholding info about the necessary increase of pain meds, withholding info about NOT giving me my epilepsy meds, or failing to call in a neuro consult. Lawsuit to follow. I beg you. STAY AWAY. read more

I was told today that my dad has less than 6 months to live. We had to tell him that and discuss hospice care with him. On one of the worst days of our lives as a family, 1 nurse made our day so much worse. Elaine (or Elena, or whatever her name is that works on the 2nd floor) needs immediate sensitivity training. She was the absolute worst. She was sarcastic and smug and the opposite of what we expected from a nurse. She started talking about us in Spanish, thinking we wouldn't understand, and we understood every disrespectful thing she said about us. So unacceptable! Actually, my dad has been in and out of different hospitals for years now and the nurses on the 2nd floor of the Allen hospital were the most distant, cold and did not care to engage with any relatives on the floor or even the patients unless they absolutely had to, and even then it was lacking empathy and care. They stayed in a little group talking and gossiping and had zero bedside manner. Shame on them. Especially that Elaine nurse. They should address her attitude because families are going thru enough. I hope another family doesn't go thru this on their difficult days because of her. read more

We are in very sensitive times right now with a pandemic going on and I called to ask if the ED is over capacity since my mother has been having COVID like symptoms. Given the situation at hand my simple question was will the waiting room time to be seen be something like 10 hours? His response was "well if you feel 10 hours is a long time for your health then i suggest you don't come". I was shocked and appalled at his response! I don't know where to begin I celebrated the proximity of this ER when it opened b/c I live in the immediate ( 8 minute walking ) Inwood community We are an African -American family residing in this community ( predominately Dominican or white for over 40 years). Our experience of this ER has been problematic, from it's opening until now and we actually prefer going to 168th street, or further downtown if possible. My husband is there now, waiting for a room. I was told he has pneumonia He's tested negative for Covid and is vaccinated and boosted . He is too breathless and fatigued for a trip downtown. The front desk RN who is African-African American (there are two reception area staff) , has been helpful and professional. The AA guard has been obnoxious, rude as hell, a real smart aleck ! Until recently, this location seems to have attracted a preponderance of rude, insensitive staff and we have learned to avoid it like the plague. Perhaps, if the patient is white and/or from Riverdale they are treated with a modicum of dignity and respect. As an older teen (19) my daughter was accused by the then triage nurse of being a drug seeking addict, instead of being treated immediately for her acute asthma. Unfortunately, it was a holiday weekend and we arrived directly from the airport returning from a vacation. The white Latina nurse insisted on silencing me, did not check records or listen to history. She jumped to her own conclusions based on what ? the color of our skins, the lateness of the hour, the holiday ? who knows ? However she delayed access to treatment, while she probed needlessly about drug use from my breathless daughter. Just a very traumatizing, horrible experience and no apology, when the physician's exam proved her wrong. However the Upshot for us, years later my daughter could write a very honest, persona medical school application essay about the colorist, racial profiling she'd faced trying to get treatment at our local hospital emergency room. Citing this as one reason, among others of course, why she wanted to become a physician. This ER had left a sour taste but she graduated ( Icahn School of Medicine formerly known as Mt Sinai and is currently an MD practicing in Philadelphia PA , serving another diverse community. Hopefully, with the compassion, and caring learned at home and not from ER visits at Allen Pavilion -CPMC. My husband and I still live in Inwood and have had over the years to use Allen. I was a patient, who left after being ignored for hours, though at that time I made it through triage without a hitch. Someone had aided me to walk into that ER as I suddenly developed blindness literally that morning and was to be expected terrified. Later, the same day, referred by my private eye doctor, I was diagnosed at Mt Sinai hospital as having a spontaneous ( macular) retinal tear(holes). I literally called my daughter in a panic after no one would tell me anything for hours and I was unable to see well enough to walk without assistance. No one noticed as we left ands drove me downtown to my doctor and then to Mt. Sinai hospital. Someone from Allen hospital called me at home- 2 days later ??? to inquire about why I left. Really !!! So yes, my daughter was born at what is now known as NewYork-Columbia hospital on 168th and family members have been employed there ( my sister was an RN ) and we've received satisfactory treatments from trusted doctors at the 168th street main location. We continue to see doctors there and have procedures done there. Years ago they opened an Urgent Care across Bdwy for those determined not to be in true need of emergency care. They also separated pediatric from adult emergency and learned to send breathless Asthma patients for treatment first before asking a million and one questions. Some staff there, as anywhere, have had poor people skills (bed side manners) but others have been kind, compassionate professionals. It's a mixed bag. But this Allen ER has been nothing but problems for me and my family Good-luck if you have to use it !!! read more

I had a very bad experience at their emergency. So when I was told by my OBGYN that I had to have my C-section at this hospital I was so worried and didn't want anything to do with being treated here. I was concerned about my baby and myself. On March 4, was my scheduled C-section at 6am there was a snow storm this day but my C-section still went on, the doctors were all on time. To keep it short it was a great experience they went way beyond my expectations. I had a private room which was great. The food was good the attention from my nurses were great. I got to leave a day early because of the great care. Their emergency room is questionable but their maternity ward is so much better and I wanted to update my review because of them. read more

This place almost killed me. December 26, 2012 I realized I was coming down with that "super flu" that swept across the country. Waves of agonizing, achy chills; bone-wracking cough, swollen super sore throat. I had to act fast. So I went to the Allen Pavilion. Big mistake. It was the longest, and worst night of my life so far. At 4pm I went in, and waited, and waited. Yes, you wait in an "emergency room," but by the time they finally "assessed" me, I had gotten much worse. My cough was deeper, my throat was closing up, and my temperature was 100. But apparently not high enough to warrant any fever reducing medication while I continued to wait. And wait. I saw literally dozens of people go in, over the course of 2 hours. Many of them came out again, and went on their way. Nobody in the waiting room seemed to be in any visible distress. Yet, all the while I was sitting there, shivering with my full winter garb on, coughing uncontrollably. People avoiding me because I seemed (and was) extremely sick and contagious. After 3 hours, my name was finally called. Surprise! It was just to get my insurance info. After another hour I had gotten worse, but managed to drag myself to the front and demand (with what little energy I had) to be seen. They said "you're welcome to leave." Needless to say, I had already invested a lot of time. And, frankly, I was in no shape to go anywhere. So, after much insistence, an NP took my temperature (102!), and signaled some alarm to her coworkers. Shocker: I was actually quite sick. Not just a hallucinating mumbling weirdo. I was taken to the back and plopped on a cot in the hallway where I sat in misery for another hour and a half. There was literally nothing going on in the hospital at this point. It was late at night. The staff were just chattering and gossiping. After getting nowhere again, and again, I decided to record the experience on my iPhone. Because, even in my battered state, I realized that I was being neglected. (I've listened to the audio, and it's damning.) I finally insisted on an Xray. Or something. Anything. So, about 45 minutes later I got my Xray, and then they let me sit there for another hour for the results. Apparently I didn't have pneumonia (yet) and the NP barked at me: "Well, what else do you want us to do??" "HELP ME!!!!!" I said. "I WANT YOU TO HELP ME!!!" I was just so incredibly miserable. So they escorted me to the triage room (finally), where patients are supposed to go, much sooner. 95% of the patients back there were new. People I had not seen out in the lobby. Which means they had completely turned-over their admittances while I was left to wait (rot) in the back halls. And all the staff was just sitting around. Not really doing anything. No typing. No scurrying. No triage-ing. Just NPs' casual, hushed chatting. They put me in one of the (many) open beds and left me there. No doctor in sight. After yet another hour I was finally (finally) approached by a doctor. Who took my temperature (103!) listened to my (now very bad) chest, and he gave me an albuterol nebulizer (which didn't help). And -get this- I had to actually ask him for something to help with the pain. And you know what he did? He sent a NP over with 2 Tylenol. I had suffered for over 8 hours. Ignored. Passed over for kids with scraped knees. And just when I finally thought I was going to feel some relief from my pain... they give me 2 over-the-counter Tylenol. I choked it down. Then I got up, and stumbled out. Nobody even blinked. The entire time I was there I was not once offered water. I was not once offered Tylenol, or Advil before the very, very end. I was not once approached, or interviewed, or even had my name called... aside from the time they wanted my insurance information. I had to initiate all the contact aside from the initial call, and to get my "money" info. So over the next 10 days I suffered at home (it was between Xmas and New Years, so doctors were gone). I had a 106 fever for a day-and-a-half, and 100-103 for the rest of the days. I'm surprised I don't have brain damage (I might, who knows). I took so many over-the-counter cough medicine, and pain relievers, my stomach was shot. None of it helped. Surprise! I also developed bouble-bilateral pneumonia. And ended up having to go on an extensive regimen of antibiotics, for weeks. So glad I caught it early! Look. As an intelligent, independent adult, all I was trying to do was "get out in front" of what I knew was going to be a nasty, nasty virus. I was being responsible, and proactive. What a fool I was. I wouldn't wish the (mis)treatment I got at the Allen Pavilion on my worst enemy. It was that terrible. What they did to me was sub-human. Literally torture. If I was having a heart attack in the Allen Pavilion parking lot, I'd insist on being taken somewhere else. The doctor's code is "first, do no harm." But the Allen Pavilion did me harm. And I will never forgive them. read more

Came into the ER room with my roommate who was claiming of short breath. As soon as the ambulance left, the nurse checked her breathing and came to conclusions that she was having a panic attack. She went on to say we have to wait for doctor. Another nurse entered and stated that her breathing as fine and she wouldn't need machines attach to her body. We sat in the bed in the ER for over two hours and no one has pass by to check on her or to at least dismiss her since they don't have the authority or correct personal to treat "anxiety". This place is horrible. The patient next to us keeps yelling "someone help me I'm choking" he is coughing so bad and vomiting but nurse tells him he has to wait. This is gross and unethical. My wife is 7 months pregnant and is having some minor bleeding the first thing the "doctor" did was ask where does she work or go to school or does she do nothing like that even matters.On top of that they put an iv wrong and try to flush it and when my wife scream in pain she was like "if you want we don't do this i don't care is up to you" like that was an option ,they need to do something about this nurses and doctors that don't show the care and empathy to their patients like they should . I have been spending a great of time in the Emergeny Room of The Allen Pavilion! My beloved mother-in-law who resides in an independent living facility will occasionally fall and need to be transported to an emergency room and has picked Columbia Presbyterian's uptown branch since her doctors have offices there. Over the last few years, I have watched with fascination how dedicated and empathetic the doctors, nurses and aids are in taking care of all of the patients who end up( often in the middle of the night) in their care. About three weeks ago, I spend the early morning hours between 2 and 7 a.m. while their dedicated team helped diagnose and treat my beloved mother-in-law! I was very impressed with Dr. Mark Piehl who made her feel like she was the only patient in his very busy ER. As a result of Dr. Piehl's attentiveness and extra care, he and his team realized that she needed surgery and arranged for her to be transferred to the Milstein Hospital. I was in a car accident Sunday. After being assessed at the scene, I went to the emergency room at Allen Pavilion. On a scale of 1-10, my pain level was a 7. I FULLY understand the challenges of an emergency room in general and more so during the pandemic. Unfortunately, the doctor-Dr. Lock was uncaring/tired and after a 3.5 hour wait, with no results, I left. I plan on writing the hospital director and board members (trying to find it has been difficult). There were so many negative interactions. read more
