Fantastic boutique hotel well-located in downtown Pella. Over the Fourth of July weekend the town was surprisingly quiet but you can walk nearly anywhere from here. Very nice third floor rooms were clean and comfortable. The attached restaurant was closed during our visit. The little breakfast bar isn't much but was decent. read more

Stayed the weekend in Pella at this hotel. Mixed thoughts overall. What I liked: -Location (close/walking distance to MANY things) -VIEW (stunning view from the room) -breakfast (delicious pastries and other items for breakfast) -clean and nice bathrooms in the lobby as well as clean lobby overall -hallways and main areas well maintained and labeled well What could be improved: -staff inconsistently at front table (often had to ring a bell to find someone) -parking was not great. You had to hope there was parking in the lot by the Police station or pay for parking underground. -we found some random hairs (not ours) when we arrived (one long stand in the bathroom and one by the outlet that a lamp was plugged into). -there was a large coffee stain on the comforter on my bed. Kind of gross but it didn't smell so I assumed there had been an attempt to clean it. Overall, a fine experience. For the price I am not positive I would stay again but I suppose it depends on my reason for visiting. Definitely had some areas for improvement but the positives were overall very strong compared to some weaker "cons". Easy to make improvements! read more

Liberty Street Kitchen is a nice find at the end of the Molengracht in Pella. The patio is a summer favorite and the fireplace in the lobby bar is a beautiful (and usually not busy) place to meet friends for a drink or before dinner. If you can get Aleigha as your server in the restaurant you will be blown away by this sweet midwestern charm. Don't miss the burgers here. That are not the most elegant but may be the best value and they are DELICIOUS! read more

Had a great stay during Knoxville nationals, the staff was attentive and very friendly...parking was easy no need to pay underground parking garage fees. The town was great, everything within walking distance. It was a quaint village type town very different from Knoxville which was much needed! The room was big! Lots of space was great, mini fridge, coffee, I never took advantage of the continental breakfast but it was there, the restaurant there was very good also, ate there for lunch our first day. We stayed at the Royal Amsterdam in Pella Iowa June 18 & 19, 2021. Room number was 303. The room was clean and neat. We had a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. The view from our room was the Windmill and the blue river. The room was quiet at night; we didn't hear traffic of any of the other guest at the hotel. There is underground parking available. I would suggest using it. It makes it really easy to bring your luggage up to your room and easier at check out as well. I can't currently remember the lady at the front desk who checked us in but she was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable about the whole town of Pella. She recommended the best place for drinks, supper, and coffee in the morning. This hotel is within walking distance to everything you could want or need. The hotel does offer breakfast in the morning. I would definitely stay there again. Just a lovely place. read more

Great hotel ! The location is perfect and the staff is friendly. They are in the middle of a major remodel so that was my only issue. Not having the complementary breakfast was really a bummer ! Other than that the hotel is newly remodeled with great finishes and it looks & feels like you're getting much more than it costs. All of the local places to eat and drink are within walking distance and the hotel has a great entrance/ exit layout which makes it easy to navigate the walk. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend if they ever had to come to Pella Iowa ! read more

We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Amsterdam. The hotel is undergoing a remodel. We stayed on the second floor with the remodel was already completed. Our room was beautiful, modern yet traditional with white and gray touches. Paella was such a fun place to stay and the hotel was located in the center of town and overlooked a picturesque canal. I'm not sure if I'll ever return to Iowa but I'll definitely stay here again if I do! My friends were totally intrigued by the photos. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when this hotel is an option. read more

Nice hotel in a great location. Rooms were clean and quiet. Not getting 5 stars because like most hotels now they only have blinds without curtains. Light streams through the sides. The bathtub drain was broken (the "plug" was out on the side of the tub. We would prefer if they listed free breakfast as being only a continental breakfast (pastries, bagels, cereal). Those are more generalized complaints of hotels overall. The Royal Amsterdam was very nice, the staff was friendly and the location is great. I do agree with another reviewer that the elevator needs some sprucing up. read more

Here I sit at the Royal Amsterdam Hotel. Excuse me while I throw up in my mouth. Having been to Amsterdam, AND a real hotel, experience tells me that this place is neither. A quick cut to the chase. First off, apologies to anyone who must stay here. Secondly, stay at the Holiday Inn. Thirdly, eat at Kalderas, or bring your own. Sorry so crass. Hotel is beat up. Restaurant is lousy. My dog could serve up a better steak, nibble marks included. At least I would know where his mouth has been. This is the FIRST place I have ever visited which ONLY has house wine. My house, would NEVER serve this wine. Maybe a misspell, house whine?? Sorry folks. Avoid this place like a coughing anemic-looking skinny person with a face full of cold sores. read more

My fiance and I booked the 'Weekend Getaway Package' (the one night option) as our Valentine's Day getaway. We were more than pleased with our stay! We set out to have a quaint, one day escape to check-out the Pella town square. The hotel has a wonderful location that walks out to great shops and modern eateries. Having worked in the hospitality industry for more than ten years, my number one expectation is good service. The Royal Amsterdam went over and beyond! Our check-in was personable, smooth and left us with no questions. Lucia checked us in and made us feel right at home. Our package included wine, chocolates, flowers, movie tickets and a gift certificate to the restaurant. The wine, chocolates, and flowers were waiting for us in the room and the rest was waiting for us at the front desk when we were ready to use them. The sparkling wine was delicious and the chocolates were local, which I loved! Our room was clean and quiet. The rooms aren't the most modern, but that's the feel of the whole hotel: historical charm. We had a microwave and mini-fridge, as well as a Jacuzzi tub and a large shower, as well as access to underground (heated) parking. We ate in the restaurant for dinner. It was more casual than we expected, but the food was home-style and delicious! We ordered the mussels for an appetizer. They were a little small in size, but tasted great. We both ordered steak and it was done perfectly. The side dishes were amazing (even after being reheated later the next day). They don't have a wine list, but do offer several varietals by the glass. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the Royal Amsterdam. We were looking for a quaint, historical setting where we could easily explore the area and have a relaxing weekend and found all of that here. The staff was incredible and accommodating in every way. One of the front desk ladies even went out of her way to find us some ibuprofen despite the fact that there wasn't actually a pantry! It's tough to live up to expectations when your hotel is called "The Royal Amsterdam," right? I mean, that name makes you expect gold toilet seats. Despite being a bit over-priced ($119/night) the Royal Amsterdam was a perfectly fine place to stay. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, workspace, good bathroom and good. water pressure in the shower. Cable TV, but outdated TVs. "Royal" would be HD flat screens. The continental breakfast is basically cereal and toast, which left something to be desired. A waffle iron and some fresh fruit might help this breakfast feel more "royal." The fitness center is nice, but you need an additional key other than your room key to access it, and you have to walk outside to get to it. Card keys for the rooms would be a good idea for "royalty" - or at least something other than what they've got going on now: keys with HUGE wooden key fobs. Someone needs to realize that that's a really annoying thing for guests to have to carry around. You'd better have a purse because no way is that thing gonna fit in your pocket. Overall, this is a nice place, especially if you want a taste of what's local. But in terms of what you get for the price, the Holiday Inn might be the better choice. read more

Icy sidewalks, my daughter fell hard five feet from the front door. Long wait to be welcomed at the front desk, even after hitting the ringer several times we ended up leaving and coming back in with our luggage before someone helped us. The first room had a stained bedspread and a mouse turd ON the bed! We were moved to a second room that vaguely smelled like smoke, had a chunk of chocolate cake with sprinkles along the floorboard near the door, and to top it off there was cake in the bed--in the sheets down to the foot of the bed. Last straw. We left and went to a nearby hotel that was half the price, had no rodent droppings and clean sheets! Save your money and don't stay at this hotel. read more

The renovations are absolutely beautiful. We've stayed in many many nice hotels in big cities and this hotel absolutely rivals them. The front desk staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was amazing, they bring a healthy amount of pastries from one of the famous local bakeries. My step-son goes to Central (freshman) so I've stayed here a couple of times. It is clean and HIGHLY friendly (they remember us!) and the location is wonderful. I don't know why other Central parents would stay at the generic chain hotels 2 miles away from campus and downtown and pay more when this is available for less $$. Besides the spring tulips we also enjoyed delicious food and wine in the hotel restaurant. And, there was lots of fun shopping in Pella too. The Royal Amsterdam Hotel in Pella, Iowa is one of those wonderful hotels to which you look forward to returning. Located in Pella's Molengracht, just off the primary shopping district, you are immediately impressed by the European architecture of the building as well as the quality construction seen throughout the hotel. While more of a boutique hotel, I have found it is important to book well ahead as the hotel is frequently filled. Most rooms have great views. I prefer the rooms that face the Molengracht Canal or the Vermeer Windmill. The service is very friendly and professional. Although the Royal Amsterdam provides a complimentary continental breakfast, I have always preferred taking a quick morning walk to the Windmill Restaurant that overlooks the city square. It is a nice way to experience life in a small town. The Royal Amsterdam is most certainly the best hotel in Pella and one of the best in the state. Monarch's Restaurant & Lounge, located in the hotel, is a delight. They have a much diversified menu with an excellent selection of seafood, steaks and pasta. I have especially enjoyed their freshly made thinly-sliced onion rings. They are simply incredible. From their Grill, the Filet de Burgo is exceptional. This tenderloin is prepared as you would find in Holland, with fresh oregano, basil, butter, spices and sautéed in garlic. I have not found that type of presentation anywhere else in the USA. As for Monarch's lively Lounge, they most certainly have some of the best martinis in the state of Iowa. The Royal Amsterdam is the best hotel in Pella and one of the best in the state. read more

My expectations for any hotel property are fairly simple - I want a friendly, attentive staff, a clean room, consistent wifi, and as hassle-free an experience as possible. I have visited Pella, Iowa on business on average 3-10 visits a year for the past 13 years, and the Royal Amsterdam is my hands-down hotel choice in Pella. The staff is fantastic and go out of their way to serve me. I even had an unfortunate incident a few years back where I came down with the flu upon arrival and the staff catered to my every need while I recovered. The rooms are always clean and comfortable. They offer a very nice complimentary breakfast and have the best bar and restaurant in the city, though I'm also a big fan of Kaldera's restaurant. Lastly, their location in the center of the city can't be beat. I highly recommend. read more
