However my main course of fish pie was poorly presented and the accompanying vegetables were soft and the portion was small. The pie itself was tasty but the whole experience was let down by the poor presentation. The meals of others in my party looked good, especially burgers and steaks - if I go back I'll be sticking to those.

There is a pub garden with lots of room and chickens for the children to watch. Close by there are attractive walks and a very good children's playground. Apparently there is a glassed-over well outside the gents. Sadly the food is not quite as good as the setting; portions are small (only two very small roast potatoes per person)and every single one of the dishes I wanted to try was off. (Maybe that is why I am being unfair to the food!) The beers include the Ringwood Old Thumper at 5.4 per cent. There's local Tanglefoot ale, plus bitter from Palmers of Bridport, which has been in business for 110 years and has got a thatched roof to prove it. All in all, a lovely place to visit for lunch on a sunny day - just maybe stick to sandwiches or chips.

The apple crumble consisted of apple which bore more than a passing resemblance to the tinned product, with undercooked powdery crumble which shot across the table in a cloud when my friend blew on the very hot (microwaved?) apple to cool it. The grounds are beautifully kept and in a lovely spot but the food spoilt the occasion.
