ATL for the story and articles on the disability crisis and the impact on lawlessness causing homelessness. I have not received any response in three years. I like the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. When I first got my own place in Atlanta, I subscribed to the physical paper. I soon realized I couldn't keep up with reading the physical copies and they just piled up on my doorstep and inside my condo. So, like most people, I just started reading the AJC online. When I think of the AJC, a few names that come to mind for me are Ken Sugiura (the Georgia Tech beat writer), Mark Bradley (sports columnist), John Spink and Hyosub Shin (photographers), and Alexa Lampasona (restaurants/dining). I've enjoyed their work. Rodney Ho (entertainment) and Yvonne Zusel (restaurants/dining) are a couple other names that come to mind. Some of my friends/acquaintances are friends/acquaintances with Rodney (and I'm sure other AJC staff I don't know about). I met Ken. He introduced himself to me in the McCamish Pavilion (Georgia Tech's basketball arena) media room years ago. He's a nice guy who knows his stuff. Alexa once contacted me via Yelp and then email to ask for my permission to use one of my food photos for an AJC Dining piece she was putting together. I know some of my fellow Georgia Tech fans aren't fond of Mark. Back in the day, on Tech's online message boards, some nicknamed Mark "Bark Madly." I believe it was because of a perceived bias Mark had for the University of Georgia. I've always found Mark's articles to be well-written and logical, something I always strive for in my own writing, whether it's for hobby (Yelp) or work (technical). John Spink and, to a lesser extent, Hyosub Shin are the names I recall often seeing as the photographers on interesting AJC photos. By interesting, I mean after a major event and/or news story has occurred. No matter what day or hour of day, Spink often seems like the one to capture the big moments for the AJC. I made an appearance in the AJC. It was from a kaiseki (Japanese traditional multi-course dinner) event at Nakato restaurant on Cheshire Bridge Road, with owner Sachi Nakato Takahara. Our photo was published in the April 30, 2018 edition of the AJC, page D2 (Living section). I uploaded a screenshot of that page with this Yelp review. I wouldn't have known about my appearance in the AJC if my coworker hadn't spotted me in our company's physical copy. Our company's Marietta office has a subscription to the AJC and it's available in the break room for employees and guests to read. When I used to go into the office, pre-COVID, I'd always at least scan the front page headlines. The preponderance of one-star reviews baffles me. Sadly, print media is falling to the wayside and like other dailies across the country, the AJC is doing its best to hold on. Sections are thinner or in some cases, simply abandoned. But what's there, I like and I'm happy to continue receiving the paper Thursday through Sunday as we've always done. Home delivery has never been a problem. The paper is always in the driveway when I take the dog out at 6:30 a.m. When we're away from home, I place a "vacation stop" through their automated system. It's never failed me. When I need customer service, I'm able to speak to a live person. One thing. With lagging numbers and slipping subscribership, prices have gone up. I was shocked when I got a renewal notice that was $100 more than what I paid last year. I called customer service to see if they could do better. When I was told "no" I decided against renewing, thinking I'll just buy the paper in Publix. About ten days later an AJC rep called me. He agreed to match the price I paid last year. I grew up reading the AJC. Back then there were thick papers with tons of stuff. On Saturdays I would read the comics esp Calvin and Hobbs, Brenda Starr, Beetle Bailey, Garfield, Blondie, Baby Blues...to name just but few. I also enjoy Mike Luckovich's political cartoons. Of course now everything is online and in my opinion its a pity. There is something satisfying about reading a newspaper. The smell of the paper, and if it rained the night before you would have to get the hair dryer sometimes to blow dry some section that got wet. The key to really reading the paper is you work through it like a stack of mail. From the International and national headlines to the local news. Then you work to the lifestye section and check out all the new restaurants and who's doing what. Then its the book and music section where you read the reviews of the news books that came out to see if they're worth picking up at your local library. Of course you gotta check out the classified. It always a fun read to check out the personal classified to see who is looking for whom. I can't tell you how many times I've see people place an ad in the classified wanting to thank a random person for some good deed they did for them at such n such place.... I still by the Sunday AJC at my local gas station and I try to buy print newspaper at least 4-5 times a week just because I still like getting my news through print....Hope the AJC can stay open....I'm depending on you guys! read more

Horrible customer service! My dad loved the AJC. He has a subscription for years. He died in February 2019. I tried to cancel his subscription in April 2019. It is $60 a month. You call the number 800-933-9771 to cancel. No one ever answers the phone. Just music and a recording telling me to wait for the next available agent who never picks up. My first attempt was on 4/3/2019. After no luck, I emailed them at customercare@ajc.com giving them his address, phone, and full name and telling them he died. They replied and told me I had to call the 800-933-9771 number. My final and third attempt was today, 7/23/2019. I still can't get through after 8 minutes of listing to the same idiotic recording. Atlanta Journal Constitution is terrible. I started a subscription back in March of 2021. When I signed up for the subscription at a Walmart my information was stored in as automatic payment. When I set up an account I realized what they did and I called and asked them to remove me from auto pay and after the month is up cancel my subscription. I started getting bills saying my new subscription needed to be paid. I called and finally they cancelled the subscription, but then I get a bill. Called again talked to manager and everything was good. Now today I get a call from a Customer Service Representative let her talk then said I am not interested and she was really rude, unprofessional and down right disrespectful. The home delivery service has been horrible. Over the last several months, we received our paper only about 25% of the time without having to call and report the issue. When you report the issue, they will tell you it should be delivered in the next 2 hours or call back. It's rare that they ever send a replacement. This issue has been escalated to the route manager, distribution, etc. on many occasions but apparently the problem cannot be resolved. They ask us to support local journalism, but with such poor customer service, I can't see how they can stay in business over the long term. I've subscribed to the local newspaper in the last four cities I've lived in for the past twenty years. Why is it that the most expensive subscription has had the worst delivery service? In all of the other cities, I've received the paper seven days a week and almost never had to call about a missed delivery. Here, a subscription is so expensive that I decided to only get Sunday delivery. It's almost every Sunday that I'm having to call about a missed or late delivery. Here it is 10:10am and still no morning paper. They like to remind you that the paper can be read online. Thought I would give AJC another chance after previously canceling due to bad customer service. Unfortunate this time experience was even worse that before and has affirmed my decision to not be a customer. Absolutely horrible customer service department. Paid $100+ for Digital Access and Sunday Paper. However, I cannot receive digital access until next Sunday (seven days from now) because I upgraded to Sunday Paper. What? If I would have purchased the digital access subscription only for less money, they say I could access the article I wanted to read now. But since I purchased the higher subscription, no access for seven days so after paying $100+ I can stll not finish reading the article that I was wanting to read. This horrible experience reminds me why I canceled the AJC the first time. I have found the reporting and news coverage excellent but the policies and customer service is ridiculous. I worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, delivering newspapers. They lied to me about what I was making to get me to except the job they put off paying me as long as they could for about three weeks when I finally saw my paycheck it was half of what they promised. Tony, who was in charge of payroll did not answer my calls. Chris continued lying to me for three weeks and got very nervous when I confronted him. He basically admitted that he lied to me so I quit they didn't pay me for the last two weeks as retribution. There was one point where he even tried to pay me in Kwik trip, gas carts, very immoral and unethical, some of the worst people I have come across in my life. read more

Don't waste your money expecting home delivery. In December, I signed up for the online edition plus home delivery of the Sunday AJC. My wife really likes to have the Sunday paper for the advertisements. Delivery is very hit or miss. Three times the paper has been delivered with no problem. Four times I have reported that the paper was not delivered. One of those times it was redelivered the same day and another time the next day. Two times I never received it at all. I shouldn't have to spend my time on the phone or internet to get a newspaper delivered...that is what I am paying them to do. It is a shame that newspapers are having a difficult time surviving in today's world, but I will no longer be supporting them with my dollars. read more

I don't really feel like putting a large amount of effort into my review concerning how I feel about the AJC because of the lack of effort the AJC staff puts into compiling a decent newspaper. So I am going to sum up the AJC with two words: Horrible newspaper....that is not worth the money....and they kill lots of trees. Okay, so that was more than two. If there was ever a newspaper that dedicated themselves to putting the most biased and slanted point of view almost every issue, especially my coveted sports page, it has to be the AJC. Sometimes when I read the Sports section of the Newspaper I start to wonder if the recruiters who hired the sports journalist for the paper narrowed the candidates down to somewhere between a monkey and a toddler as far as the range of intelligence is concerned. I have only recently been noticing some disturbing patterns for getting a simple delivery issue rectified.. In the last 2 weeks, 6+ phone complaints about home delivery have gone unresolved. This includes talking to countless of so called supervisors.. NO ONE seems able to give a confirmation of cancellation - - which by the way, I HAVE DONE - - I hate to, but I am cancelling this awful print subscription. . The pitiful part about it, AJC does nothing to try and retain customers!!! The subscriber relations person I talked to sounded unfazed as she simply confirmed the cancellation - - not even so much as trying to offer amends to keep a valued customer. . SO THAT'S THE WAY AJC FEELS ABOUT A 70+ YEAR SUBSCRIBER??? It is pitiful and sad that a major city such as Atlanta can't have a better quality paper. AJC is an extremely unprofessional business. I emailed AJC to stop the delivery of their "buyer's edge select" newspaper to my house twice. They replied to each email saying that my address would be removed from their delivery list. Many months later, I keep having my house parking trashed every Sunday with this paper. After I finally submitted a complaint on the BBB , I received another reply assuring me they were addressing the problem: behold ! after 1 week I received another copy of this newspaper and I refused to close the complaint on the BBB. It's 2 weeks and I received again another copy. I canceled the AJC about 4 years ago for two reasons: 1. The news was biased to the left 2. Delivery was MANY times late, no paper, wet or damaged after being run over by a car. I recently subscribed to the $1.50 special. What a deal! I had recently read an AJC paper at the airport and was impressed that the paper has become much more to the middle and does many investigations that have benefited Atlanta. I got my first paper on time and in a place I could find it. Happy day! The next Sunday it did not arrive. I requested that it be delivered. Received it late afternoon. The last two Sundays no paper appeared. FRUSTRATED again by the same bad service I went on line and canceled the subscription. I did not get any acknowledgement within two days so I took the time to call and unsubscribe. Was able to get my complete refund ( even for the paper that did arrive on time). I vaguely remember a guy at walmart offering a bunch of coupons for one months prescription that cost $5 but I NEVER thought they would continue charging me $35 a month for 2 years! This review is on the TERRIBLE customer service and subscription service. A few months ago a young man came to my door and said that he was selling AJC subscriptions to help with college. That is the ONLY reason I subscribed. When I was reviewing my checking account online I noticed that they billed me for the subscription, but they also charged my checking account for someone else's subscription. Someone I have never heard of. When I contacted customer service the representative asked for documentation which I provided. I waited for a couple of weeks and never received a credit. She said that she had left it in her supervisor Ebony Rose's hands and that she didn't do anything with it. Then I contacted Ebony Rose directly. She said that she saw that I had already received a $5.48 credit and that she would get me the rest of my credit and send me a $10 gift card. I did NOT ever receive ANY credit or gift card. The latest changes by the AJC further decreases both the quality and readability of our pitiful local newspaper. The merging of sections, both print and the e-edition, make finding the news or reading the news with any sense of order impossible. The flow is horrible and the mixing of local, U.S., and world is both frustrating and unnecessary. And why would you mix the opinion pieces throughout (Bill Torpy's column just appeared in the middle of a section unexpectedly.) I have no idea why the changes were made, but there are better sources of news (not opinion pieces) from multiple sources. Not sure I will keep my subscription active. I do not feel better informed after reading this mess of a publication. Disgraceful for a city of over 5 million people to have such a poor example of a newspaper. read more

Have to agree with Lauren: I've lived in Atlanta area my whole life and never got much of anything out of reading the AJC. Their reporting is bland and rarely interest-grabbing and concerned with blabbing about opinion rather than focusing on excellent coverage of events. There was recently a big controversy when they let the Books editor who'd been on staff forever go, thereby even further reducing the amount of unbiased quality content they put out. I mean, the Arts section used to at least do profiles of decent authors and bring attention to reading outside of Oprah's booklist. But now that they've let her go there's no telling what that will slide into. I wouldn't take a subscription to AJC if it were free. It'd be just more garbage to throw away. Interesting way to list ratings. I have been trying to cancel my on-line paper and can't seem to to find the way to do it without going through the group who is ruining the paper. They block a great portion at the top to keep trying to get me to click on what they want me to watch. The topper was this morning when a message was attached to my curser and followed and blocked everything I did. If I want to cancel, those are the people I am told to call. The curser that followed me this morning was almost the length of the message below. A real controling bunch who want to control what we read. Poor AJC. Okay, I read the AJC one day a week: Thursday. Why? Because I absolutely love the Food and Drink section. While I wasn't too fond of his restaurant review style, I think John Kessler makes an excellent food writer, and I always learn something new about the foodie scene in Atlanta from his columns. I also have enjoyed the AJC's recent project to preserve and modernize old Southern recipes from families around the state. The "what can I bring?" feature always has simple, easy, company friendly, comfort food recipes. I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get all my news literally when it's breaking from online sources, so I might as well use the paper for the same thing generations before have used it for -recipe clipping! :) read more

My review will be of the subscription service, not the newspaper itself. I had been a AJC subscriber for a couple of years - only Saturday delivery and really just for the coupons. However, I've come to the conclusion that dealing with AJC subscription service and the incompetent customer service is not worth the discount I get compared to purchasing the paper in-store. That aside, I keep getting phone calls begging me to rejoin their subscription service. I have now asked them three times to add me to their do-not-call list. They still call. It's usually some very young-sounding, I'm guessing college students trying to earn extra cash. The number is never the same. Does AJC just hand their lapsed subscription users to college students and asks them to call through form their own phone?!? I don't get it! But I'm really appalled. When I've mentioned to them before that I've already gotten a phone call THE SAME DAY, they usually know nothing about that, which makes me believe that my assumption is correct... they just hand over their customer lists. I find this pretty unacceptable. AJC - this makes you look really really bad! I get 3 calls a DAY every few months. Why do all of them come in the same day?? If you want to make it, you really can't afford to tick off the few people that still buy your paper... I think I will start printing my coupons online. Slimy and under handed are the thoughts that come to mind when I now think of AJC subscriptions, which is unfortunate for a paper that is trying to be reputable. This is all because the AJC will continue to bill you even if you let the subscription run out. They call this billing practice a "courtesy". In December, I used Delta Airline miles to subscribe to the AJC Sunday paper. Since I didn't have a ton of miles, I thought this would be a good way to use them. When it was time to renew, I didn't have any more miles and simply thought I would let my subscription run out. This is not how the AJC treats it's subscription customers. Instead it's up to you to call to cancel, otherwise they will continue to bill you. As other reviewers have mentioned, I started getting multiple phone calls a day without a voicemail. Finally I was home to pick up the phone and they tell me I have a $16 bill. I explain my airline mile situation and that I haven't officially subscribed and am told to call another number. After calling the number I was given, I'm told it was my responsibility to call and cancel the subscription otherwise they continue to deliver. I sent an email to customer service and they were "nice" enough to knock $5 off my bill. No where when I used the Delta Miles program to subscribe did I see any information about how the AJC handles subscriptions. Ugh, what a crummy way to run a business and stinks of desperation if this is the way a company has to nickel and dime people to make a profit. It's so disappointing to be treated this way by what should be a reputable corner stone of Atlanta journalism. This would be similar to going out to eat at a restaurant and ordering your meal, but instead of the restaurant stopping with what you ordered they continue to bring you food regardless of if you asked for it or not. Then you get the bill and you are now charged for all the extra food you didn't order and you are now responsible for. All because you didn't tell your waiter you didn't want any more food. This wouldn't make sense for a restaurant, and it doesn't make sense for the AJC. I only hope this business practice will change, and that fellow Yelp readers might be saved a few bucks in the meantime by reading this and being aware of these unprofessional actions. read more

How can a city with almost 5 million people in the metro area only have one major daily newspaper? It's dumbfounding that for daily news, there's only one voice for the bulk of Atlantans to turn to. Atlantans have to rely on what the AJC editorial staff thinks is important, and the viewpoints of a relatively small group of writers. I can understand why the AJC doesn't really change much. There's no pressure. They have no legitimate daily competition in the market. They do an adequate job in their coverage, but there's no impetus for Cox to spend more money or for the AJC staff to really dig for details since no one else is competing for the same stories. I would love to see another newspaper in town, but the AJC has such a stranglehold on the market that it's unlikely we'll see another major daily publication. I like the Saturday paper. It's the weekend, and it doesn't try as hard as the Sunday edition, which you really want to know sorta, kinda needs to go on a diet.
