The Practice Place as WE know it holds a lot of amazing memories with my brothers band and other projects. Imprints. I loved meeting Strangers Arms here and having the chance to hear them jam before and after shows and before album releases. Or just meet here and learn and watch musicians tune their instruments. Sound proof rooms, simple, just rooms to jam in and empty hallways. Faces we can't forget? None of the equipment worked when I was trying to record vocals. Staff was not helpful. Wasted 4 sessions trying to fix everything myself. Also there is no soundproofing, so you can hear anything and everything from the surrounding rooms. Do not waste your time here. read more

My Review on the Practice Place, Well I have to say its a pretty solid place to go to practice music. All the rooms have a deadbolt to keep your equipment safe and on top of that Management does advise to get renters insurance in case shit happens. The only time Ive heard of equipment getting stolen is when people forget to lock the door to their room. I have never heard of anyone kicking in the doors to break in. Bottom Line is its worth renting space here. Its a good price, it's open 24/7 which is awesome. Its very inspiring to walk in and hear many different styles of music which is what my experience was when I first stepped foot in The Practice Place. Management is great. There's security that patrols, Plenty of parking. Oh Yeah And if you rent here there will be only 2 degree separation from you and Kevin Beacon So you will have that going for you and your band. Where to begin.... air conditioning doesn't work, security cameras don't work, no WiFi, not allowed to have refrigerators, Men's bathroom sink turns off immediately after you let go of the knob, no one returns your calls, if you play anything close to heavier music you'll get volume warnings (regardless of actual volume, heavy equals loud to management), parking is horrible since they made the front curb a fire lane as well as the back fence area. When I thought I was a musician, but really was just jamming more or less to some nonsense that came to mind, this was the place where I practiced and housed my equipment. It is what it is a place to store your equipment and get together and jam out with a couple folks here and there. Meanwhile the sounds of Rick James cover bands and want to be musicians radiates through the walls and you get a good laugh. Odd though this place has so many rules and regulations for a music studio, including sound warnings if you are to loud. There are not many places in the area to rent rehearsal space. I have found that this is the place to go. I don't know why others are complaining about the smell, it is not that bad. The rooms are good but not nearly sound proof so don't try recording here. You can hear other groups playing but once you start making some noise, it won't be an issue. All in all a good place for band rehearsal. I would recommend it. read more

Welp... we've been in the Practice Place for over 6 years. The place is clean and somewhat secure. Never had a problem with security. BEWARE: They are asking all bands to remove their energy efficient small refrigerators. . What rock band wants to practice without a cold brew available after a long work day? Really pretty pathetic considering the spot we inhabit has been rented by the same person for over ten years in total and we've had a fridge for the entirety. Jack the manager is a good guy but get a clue man. We are wannabe rockers! We need a cold beverage. They probably won't mention this fact until you sign a lease and move in. read more

Super clean spot! During this pandemic it's extremely hard to find a practice spot. I'm so glad we found The Band Practice Place. Bob provided everything we needed to practice (except for the guitars and bass of course) along with everything needed for sanitation. He's very kind and was willing to answer any question we had. His humor is great which is also a plus! The spots are set up for social distancing and there's hand sanitizer along with an air filter in every section of the room. There's AC which is great during this heat. If you're looking for a spot to practice, do not second guess booking a spot here. I definitely recommend it! read more

This is one of the premiere places for bands to get a practice studio in San Jose. I do not have a room here anymore, because I have a studio in my home, but when I was living in an apartment, this was a great asset to me. The rooms are varying in size and the prices go by the size too. the biggest room I was in was $435 a month and it was decent size. we were able to fit three bands in and with the cost split up between members, it was worth it. There are a few pluses and cons to this place. First the positives; (semi colon, "Take that Vonnegut") they are open and available 24 hours a day, so you can practice whenever you want to, just do not be caught living there or you will be kicked out. There is a small vending machine area with relatively cheap snack and soda machines, Clean bathrooms and a clean building. There is security that performs routine patrols so you know your stuff is safe. The minuses are that the management and some of the bands do not like it when you are excessively loud (which is at their discretion) and if you get three citations from the Manager, then you can be kicked out, so you are supposed to play at a lower volume than you would live. One time we were practicing with a drum machine at a very low volume and still received a warning although we were not very loud at all. Other times, we were super loud. I think it all depends of the type of music that you are playing. Some of the Cover and prog rock bands were so loud that I could hear them over the metal bands and they did not get the citations. Also, to practice there, you must be over 21 years old, so that is something to be taken into consideration when looking for a practice studio. They offer hourly and monthly studios. Some bigger names have practiced here, including Insolence and The Bacon Brothers (Kevin Bacons group). [EDIT: I am less than six degrees from kevin Bacon!!!! I knew Jack, who knew kevin Bacon because of the Practice Place, therefore I am only TWO DEGREES from Kevin bacon, as is most the other people at the Practice Place.] I have been in a few of the other practice places in the area and think that the Practice Place is probably the best bargain around if you are looking for a professional setting to hone your craft. read more

Ok... So my band has been rehearsing there for about 2 years and share the space with 2 other bands. I have to admit that it did have a nasty smell. Not sure if I just got used to the smell or they have fixed the issue because I no longer have a problem with it. Overall, I feel this is a good deal because you can just leave your gear there and start jamming right away. The walls are definitely not sound proof and you will hear other bands rocking, thrashing, karaoke, or whatever the night away. Once you start playing though, you won't notice them at all. I wouldn't recommend this place if you are looking to record an album but all in all, I think it's a pretty cool place! read more

I've only had a room for a short period of time here, but I have to say I'm very impressed. It's the nicest and best maintained of any practice studios I've seen in the Bay Area. MUCH nicer than any of the places in San Francisco and it's CLEAN. I love the fact it doesn't smell like a pot club inside and there aren't any drugged out girls wandering from studio to studio looking for their drugged out friends (yes, I've rehearsed in spaces where this has happens regularly). I play mostly wind instruments and sometimes the noise from adjoining studios can be a bit much, but again it's not as bad as it is in other places where there are no rules regarding noise. No one expects you to be as quiet as you would need to be in an apartment but seriously though, do you really need to practice at full volume? Rules? Yes, Virginia there are rules. I like the fact there are rules and everyone is required to have some consideration for their neighbors. If you really want to practice in a space where anything goes, I suspect you're more interested in partying than your music and if so this isn't the place for you. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. The lot is small, but perfectly navigable as long as you're paying attention. You can also park next door in the Hertz Rental lot after hours. Just don't park in front of the exits in the back because they mean it when they say you'll be towed. I suspect the bad reviews are from people who have been kicked out due to rule violations or complaints from other tenants. read more

I was fortunate to be one of the first to use this practice area/recording studio. Optimized for the serious musician, the space is small but functional. Headphones are plugged into snap-on wireless receivers for zero-noise-to-the-neighbors enjoyment. Some drummers might need to adapt to the electronic drum set. But hey, no drums setup time! Just bring your sticks and your headphones (all members need to bring their own headphones). I've paid twice as much money for half as much greatness, so I'm loving the deal so far. But I know Mr. BoB is gong to be raising his prices soon. This best-kept secret will not last long.... Don't tell anyone. ;) read more

If you're in a San Jose based band or just a local band from the silicon valley and you're looking for a place to rehearse, The practice place is sort of an OK place to go. The simple fact of the matter is that it's not perfect by any means, but if you're on a tight budget (and let's face it most local bands are) you can get a decent sized room or even what would amount to a broom closet for a fairly decent price. The Good: This place has rooms for all types and levels of musicians, in varying shapes (seriously, they divided these things up funky). They will even let you share a room with another band if you can't afford the full rent. There are also some professional bands that practice here and therefore some chances to network and find gigs, plus just about every musician in the area knows about this place (which can be good or bad.) The Bad: The walls are a bit thin with no soundproofing (and they won't let you hang your own) and it can be hard to practice when some loud ass punk or metal band is rehearsing (badly) next door to you. Of course I'm in a metal band so I shouldn't cast stones either. ;P The building manager, Jack, is seems to be getting a bit senile in his old age. We recently had issues regarding our rent since our old roommate left, and we did find someone to take his place. In fact the guy had already been here for one month and had his name on the rental agreement and keys-in-hand when Jack called me up wondering who was paying rent and why he had a check from my drummer (whose name has been on the lease for 2 years now!!), and wanted to know if anybody wanted to share the room with us. (?!?!?!?!?!) Weird... To his credit though, he is very professional, and when he has the paperwork in front of him he knows what's going on. Anyway, the restrooms are lacking, but they are maintaned, and there are vending machines for all your snacking needs. Parking sucks on certain nights, but the weekends are usually quiet (cause everyone's out gigging) In fact I don't know why they are renting out so many rooms when there is so little parking available. So it boils down to either having a place to practice or not. And The Practice place isn't bad, but it's not great either. Though it is perhaps the most popular and most affordable in San Jose. I can definitely recommend it if you're just looking for a place to practice or need room to store your equipment. read more

I emailed the email address provided at the website with my contact info, saying that no one had returned my calls. I visited the building twice during normal business hours to an empty office. well lets just say that the reviews on the garden could not be when i owned it, because the only two rules that i cared about were it ends at midnite and pay your rent. i had no clue how much of a nitmare it became for me to even think i had a handle on this monster.it happend so long ago that i liked the negitive thought way more. also you probably dont know is i also was just a renter for a very long time before i bought the place.my experiance became so varied from up to down that i think it changed me somehow. and i relish any and all thoughts about your time there when me or kelly dalton opened the door for you. and lets not forget that me and quite a few of my fellow rockers were indeed deeply involed with addiction and self importance. this was the 80's a we all were going to ride this baby till the wheels came off and it did , michael kelly owner rock gardens read more
