A big pro for Mishap Games is that James will take a chance on you even though you are a stranger when you ask to host games. Some stores are very shy. The big problem in 2022 and in 2023 was the story was poorly cleaned. The tables were not cleaned during the week and the trash cans were never taken out either. Therefore there were nats flying around all the time. I remember for three weeks straight there was a donut box under the check out counter. The bathrooms was something out of a Eastern Kentucky rest stop. Then in the summer of 2023 there was the huge issue where out of nowhere James stopped folks from coming to the store and using his tables. He was disappointed that folks were coming in and not even saying hello or buying anything, then after months of coming to the store they would just vanish. I totally understand his frustration. Sadly, this hasty policy was enough for some folks to leave the store and never come back. And it all could have been prevented by just having the discord calendar managed better and better communication with loyal customers from the get go. Within a matter of days James reversed his policy due to the feedback he got on discord. Thankfully, for 2024, the store is much much cleaner. Sadly, once again due to horrible communication and judgement, James has lost more business. About 1.5 hours before my group was going to play at his table, one of the players who lives within walking distance brought 3 or 4 kids into the store. They were not his kids. Then I get notified that if this same person or anyone that has been playing with him at the same table does this again then we will no longer have access to the tables. So this is like five people. These five people did nothing wrong. So I just saved James the trouble by just banning myself for life. I wouldn't have a spine or self respect if I walked back in there. I wise manager would have a store policy in place for such matters if that was such a liability risk (which is what I was told) and the customer would have been told to leave immediately. Furthermore, a wise manager would tell the person that brought in the kids that they would be banned from playing, instead of casting a wide net and getting customers involved who are innocent and have done nothing wrong. This store has a lot of potential, but James seems determined to run off customers. It already has a great location with great parking. Sadly, James has failed to capitalize on the basement to help folks socialize (Fiji Island days) and the Kitchen (Fiji Island days) for supplemental income. James is an expert with games, and is friendly and can talk with you, but he's a horrible manager, and a unfair person. The margin for error is too thin when you compete with Amazon and roll 20 and the like. I don't see this business lasting through 2025. Just a wild guess.

They have an impressive inventory and helpful, knowledgeable staff. I can't wait to visit again when I have more time to look around. When you need something quick for your layout, chances are that they'll carry it and at reasonable prices.

I went into the store this evening to pick up a copy of Winning Moves Risk 1959 Edition. I called…read moreahead to inquire about it, I asked if they price matched and the lady said yes. So I arrived and picked it up, took it to the desk and the lady said she needed to get approval for the price match. I looked up the listing from walmart to show her the listed price. She said that the price, including the shipping, has to be lower than their price. The listing says "Free pickup, Fri October 11th." She took a picture of the listing, including the shipping details and sends them in a message to her store manager, no reply. She called the manager, no answer. Time is burning. She messaged the store owner, no reply. She called the owner, no answer. We are now at 20 minutes of waiting. I figured "It would be a shame to leave empty handed, i mean after all Ive waited this long." She keeps messaging and calling until finally she gets through to someone, but they hang up on her. Finally, 30 minutes after I arrived, she makes contact with someone that can approve the discount. She is than told the manager has to confirm the price and is hung up on. So we wait even longer. Finally she gets a call, they wont match the price because walmart's free shipping is only if I spend $35. Walmart clearly ships this item to the store for free. The lady at the store was very nice. I cannot recommend her more highly. The manager of the store was both unprofessional and demeaning in the way he/she treated the customer and the lady at the counter. Later in the evening the owner called me to apologize and offered to deliver it to my himself.

And Too Many Books, a beloved independent used bookstore located in the heart of Roanoke's Historic Grandin Village, is a perfect example. Owned and managed by Linda Stedman for many years, this cozy, two-story bookshop features a massive inventory of approximately 50,000 used books, which include fiction and non-fiction. There one can easily find vintage paperbacks as well as hardcover books in categories such as children's literature, history, science fiction, art, and philosophy; with extensive sections dedicated to Virginia, Civil War history, and genealogy. I was very impressed with the selection of books which included: antiquarian books, leatherbound books, out-of-print titles, limited editions, first editions, signed books by the author, and other collectible ephemera. It was a pleasure meeting the owner who came across as a very warm and deeply knowledgeable bookseller, as well as her other friendly staff in this bookstore with a very inviting atmosphere and fair prices. The store lists portion of its specialized inventory online via its AbeBooks Merchant Page. It also hosts author signings, literary discussions, and ocational major storefront sales. As a matter of fact it was holding one of those sales today where hardcover books were 20% off until the end of the month. I particularly liked a book by former Predident Barack Obama's Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza, titled: "Obama: An Intimate Portrait." The author also served as an official photographer for President Ronald Reagan. The used book in almost new condition was selling for $50, so with the discount one could buy it for $40. I highly recommend this used bookstore, for its inviting ambiance, fair prices, and deeply knowledgeable and hospitable owner and staff.
