OMG! So OVERWHELMING! You have to walk up steps. The store looks like you're stepping into someone's home. When I stepped through that door into this magical place, I was overwhelmed. Too many beads to look at. This place is stuffed with beads. All kinds, but everything is organized. There is a method to the madness. Staff recommend that you grab one of the small baskets that include small plastic bags and a pen. You place your selection in the baggy and write down how much it costs on the outside of the baggy. There are strings of beads hanging from the walls. Beads and clasps in bowls and dishes of various types, shapes, and sizes. A large assortment of chains, cut to desired length. Everything necessary to create your own custom jewelry. There were some serious bead shoppers in the shop. One of the ladies was assisting a mother and daughter duo the entire time I was looking around. They were still there when I made my purchases and exited. I purchased the cutest miniature tea cup and saucer and a faux pearl in a shell. There's even a back room where things have already been made. The staff are friendly and helpful. Super fun experience, but the jewelry itself is really poor quality. Only a day after making my bracelet the clasp broke. Luckily, I was still in NOLA and able to bring it back to get it fixed, but now a week later, some of the charms that were gold are now silver. The process was easy, you get to pick your necklace or bracelet and you have many to choose from. Now for the hard part is finding the charms you want. A very big shout out to Georgia and the wonderful crew at the Bead Shop. I've made a point to do a local draft on my travels and I was so excited to find the Bead Shop and their charm bar! We may not have caught any in a parade, but a necklace seemed the perfect souvenir for our trip to New Orleans. My mom, sister, and I spent a lovely afternoon meticulously picking out charms, and the shop had something for all our tastes and personalities. Thank you to Vera who double and triple checked that the charm placements were A++. But here's the best part. The next day, my necklace's chain broke as I went to put it on. I emailed the shop (on their one day off) for a recommendation on how best to fix it when I got home. Got all the charms, chains and hardware necessary and at the end of my selection I asked if the salesperson could demonstrate how to successfully open and close jump rings as I had been having problems. They showed me the "trick" and now it's easy peasy! I want to make ALL the things now! Yesterday I went back because there was an amazing piece that inspired me to make another necklace. This time the sales girl helped me with how to wire gemstones and to use a nail file to eliminate any wire barbs. The last time I was in a proper bead shop was in Huntington Beach, California and that was in 1975. Owner Georgia has set up a jewelry lovers dream in her "The Bead Shop" located on Magazine Street. I've been a couple times to grab "Bad Baby" necklaces by local artist MiscellaneousMae, but I was always in a rush. This time though, I was cashing in a gift certificate that I had received years ago. years, not months, years.....plural. Would it even be valid? I was giddy to find out my 15$ was indeed still valid, the staff giggled at it because it was so old. So this artist got to shopping. Staff member Sarah was really helpful and answered all my questions, gave me a mini knot tying lesson (by gum, I've been knotting incorrectly forever), explain why and which strings to use, she told me about classes and beading appointments. Maybe you aren't the do it yourselfer,no problem. They have tons of premade items or kits it you want to give it a go. It's just one bead at a time for me....soon I'll be overly addicted.....In a good way. read more

Bead shop is a great spot to buy: beads (duh), jewelry making supplies, beading kits, jewelry, local art, crystals, and a host of other things. The staff is helpful and friendly. The place is CHOCKFUL of stuff so leave the big bag at home because you'll be knocking stuff over with it. My friends and I reserved a time slot for jewelry making on Saturday, and had THE best time! We were (pleasantly) overwhelmed by the extensive selection of every kind of bead and charm available. If we wanted a bead turned into a charm, they could do it. If we wanted a gold loop instead of silver, they could do it. I never saw more of such a unique shop.So many different types of beads and helpful staff that will show you how to make a necklace/bracelet or make it for you themselves. I sometimes make jewelry on my own out of beads, and it was so cool to see all these different types that are not at crafts store like Michael's. Shannon was super nice and made a necklace for me our of a crystal I found that had a part on it that looked like a cat. I wanted that part to face out and she did an amazing job with wire to position the bead exactly how I envisioned it. I spent more than an hour in here! This shop is cray folks. If you like pretty things, don't go in here if you are on any type of budget. I went in with absolutely no intention of any project or purchase and left with the ideas and supplies for two projects and visions of other projects dancing in my head. I love the diversity of the inventory in terms of pricing, color, size, and material. They have the tools for earrings, necklaces, rings, pendants, and of course bracelets including cuffs. In addition to supplies they do also have jewelry for sale as well although mostly it just provided me with inspiration. The staff is very helpful. Once I walked around I had ideas for two projects I explained them to the staff who helped me list out what supplies I would need. They also explained the shopping process where you get a basket and some baggies and sort of collect your materials and write down the number and prices as you go along. I imagine this might be standard practices but as a newbie I needed that help. In addition to the staff resources while you shop, they offer a number of classes a month. Class prices include the cost of supplies. The only thing I would say could be improved is it is easy to get a little crowded due to the amount of stuff they cram into the little space. Once you enter the shop, it will blows your mind how many different size, shapes and color beads they carry. They also carries gemstone. They have vintage Mardi Gras glass beads as well if you are looking to take home a unique souvenir. Oh my goodness the Bead Shop is such a great store! Having been to many a bead store outside of the city I was really surprised by the large selection offered here. There's basically every kind of bead you could possibly want to buy- in sections such as wooden, gemstones, metal, etc. There's even supplies like scissors and books on arts&crafts and beading. The staff was helpful and even put the necklace that i wanted to make together for me. There's even a bead stringing room where you can make what you want and ask for help if you get a little off track.
