We were wandering around Picton, and I shopped at a yarn shop across the street, when I needed a break from shopping in the form of coffee. This place was conveniently close. It's a small shop, and does offer 1 restroom for which you need to ask for a key. Be careful; they have 2 keys! The coffee is decent. The treats are hard to choose from for a diabetic. The service was patient while I searched for my snack, and they were friendly enough but not over the top chatty. This place served its purpose. read more

Cute little local coffee shop located in downtown Picton. Indoor seating is currently not available due to COVID but they do have a couple of spots to sit at outside. We've come here three times now during our stay in Prince Edward County (my mom and step dad rented a cottage in nearby Cherry Valley for the month of July). I've tried their iced decaf Americanos (hit the spot) and on the most recent visit, their peanut butter confetti bar (which was delicious). They also have a Gelato counter, with lots of tasty looking flavours, baked goods, a small menu of mostly sandwiches, and a curated selection of food stuffs. Very very disappointed in my experience at this café today. I drop in for a sandwich whenever I'm in the area and won't be doing so any longer. With only two customers in front of me it took 20 minutes to get my veggie sandwich after ordering. Once I did get it there was nothing in it! (See picture). I politely told the lady in the back I was disappointed in my $9 sandwich in hopes she'd offer more toppings to add in it or something and she merely brushed me off and walked away. I understand we should be patient given we're in a pandemic but I would still appreciate customer service. Don't waste your money here. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. NOT SAFE. I love this place but today when I went in some lady started a screaming match with me over my dog being on the Pet Friendly Patio and we had to leave because we no longer felt comfortable in the store let alone enjoying the meal we paid $27 for because of it. As soon as the woman complained about my Pug being on the balcony and was ignorant to me they should've denied her order as she was making every single customer in there feel threatened. I come here pretty much daily to buy food and their butter chicken and now I don't feel safe to even enter the store which is sad. I love you guys but what happened today shouldn't ever happen again, yall need a sign that says to take that hatred elsewhere. Update: they refuse to do anything about this woman threatening my dogs life. I'm very livid. So much for a peaceful place to come and eat. Apparently her business is worth more than mine even though she made every single person in there uncomfortable including myself. Least you can do is put up signage, tell her to not come back or literally just give me a store credit as the way yall are dealing with this is not okay. A threat is against the law. Tell your lawyer that. Update: Instead, of dealing with the resolve first off and foremost you let this continue to the point I made a review here and yelp rather than dealing in the first place. I am going to stand my ground when my pet is threatened and I am made uncomfortable in your Cafe. You have made multiple excuses for this situation and it's very poor customer service on your part. As soon as she insulted me and was making this a fuss you should've denied her service. I came in just wanting to eat my food and leave and instead I was metaphorically pushed up against a wall and harassed while waiting for my food, so yes I am going to swear at her and tell her she's acting like a b**** when she's being one. I didn't state I wanted compensation but did state that you didn't even offer which is pretty poor service. I've been coming here since I was a child and you've even supported my family through rough times but now I guess the new owners must be from Toronto. Delightful, quaint and popular cafe right in the heart of Picton in Prince Edward County. This wonderful little coffee shop has a wide range of delicious pastries, baked goods, sandwiches and salads to accompany an endless array of coffees and teas. The caramel macchiato was, though a tad heavy on the syrup, tasty and beautifully presented. The strata baked mini savory bread tarts were tasty and satisfying, a great afternoon snack after a day out enjoying everything that the county has to offer. Service with a smile and a style to match the lovely neighbourhood, this is a Picton institution and a must visit if in town! read more

We ordered Deluxe Grilled Cheese sandwiches for our kids. The menu did not state what "deluxe" meant (I thought it might be three cheeses). When it arrived, it contained bacon (we are vegetarians) and asked for it to be replaced. Well, the attitude by the staff was atrocious. They put the blame on us and refused to either refund us a portion of our money since plain Grilled Cheese is much cheaper or offer any type of consolation (my kids would have been happy with a free cookie). Walked over three doors to the Beacon Bike and Brew and got excellent service and satisfaction. Never again. read more

Was craving a good tea one morning before we hit the road back to Toronto after staying in Sandbanks Provincial Park. We had sen this place the evening before and really wanted to try a local coffee shop. The Bean Counter was super great! Good location in the middle of downtown Picton along Main St. There is street parking out front and a side street as well. Inside there are cute little tables and chairs as well as a comfy leather sofa and club chair to lounge in. Newspapers and local newsletters litter the coffee tables so you can catch up on your reading. The decor was great and i loved the rustic but cozy feel to the space. I ordered a tea and asked them to make it in my insulated travel mug for the road. No problem. My friend got some fancy matcha green tea smoothie drink. It was cold and green and thick. But it tasted great! I didn't try any of their treats, but they had an assortment of desserts, ice cream, gelato and even some lunch items to choose from. When i'm back in Picton I'll be sure to stop by the Bean Counter again :) read more

Every time I happen to be in a small town, I always make sure to stop along the town's "Main Street" to check out the little shops and restaurants. (Every little town has one, am I right?) Today I am in the quaint Picton, Ontario, just east of Kingston. The husband and I ditched the kids (a.k.a. "leaving them with the grandparents at the cottage") to run a few errands in the nearby town. We decided to stop into a coffee shop for a bit and here we are at our laptops at The Bean Counter, at 172 Main Street, Picton. Great place! First off, the patio is welcoming and large, by what I think "Main Street Large" patios are. (Patios on Dundas Street in the Junction? Teenie-weenie, if even existent) The entire place is really big (again, by Toronto's standards), lots of mismatched, hand-me-down furniture, fantastic multi-coloured garage sale-find mugs and a delicious selection of locally baked goods and lunch items. (pretty decent gluten-free options) The gelato isn't out right now (It's 9:30am), but from the looks of the display case, they've got a great variety! The joint also seems to be a popular spot for vacationing Executives, who are so easy to spot out despite the fact that they try to look "casual." Young hipsters, senior citizen locals and out-of-towners like us make up the clientele - and in the minutes we've been sitting at this window-side table, dozens of folks have come in and out of the doors. Lots of folks seem to know each other, which remind us that we are in a small town, because it's pretty easy to think that you're in a big city when you're seated in this very cool coffee spot. My Chai-latté, reminiscent of The Second Cup's London Fog (Yum!) and Jeremy's black coffee were served in grandma's old mugs which somehow seemed like you could buy them at Pottery Barn today. The staff are friendly and efficient. They play the easy-listening music at a very comfortable level. I'm sure it's a kid-friendly joint, although there are no kids here right now. I'd be comfortable bringing my little guys here. The prices? Probably the same price as an equivalent spot in Toronto. No biggie, coffee always seem to taste better in the "coolest coffee spot in town." read more

I love the bean counter, it is a wonderful spot to go to the chat with friends, sit and rest for a minute, grab a snack on the go or to study even! It puts off a very low-key ambiance and has an overall friendly and positive atmosphere. I especially LOVE their iced mocha. HOWEVER, with all that being said I would really like to see their hours be extended past 5 in the winter months. As a PEC native, and working student, I would really love to come to the café more often to do some work and grab a coffee and a treat, but with such short hours I am not able to do so after work. Just a suggestion, but it is unfortunate that the cafes of the county are not open for those wishing to work in this type of atmosphere. Thanks! read more

I visited once, on a busy summer Sunday morning. There was about 10 people ahead of me in line but I waited a good 15-20 minutes to be served. That should have been my cue to find another place to go to, cause they did not seem equipped to handle the line. But my order was simple enough. A muffin and two toasted bagels (one with jam, one with peanut butter), and some juices. I ordered and got the muffins and juices right away. After waiting for about 10 minutes off to the side for my bagels, I followed up on my order. I was told the place was very busy and to be patient. After another 5 minutes I was tired of standing off to the side of the cash and joined my kids outside. I told the cashiers to kindly bring the bagels outside once they were ready. About 10 minutes later I followed up again inside. I told them I had been waiting 30 minutes for two bagels. They told me they would be ready very soon. I'm standing there holding a baby, but no apologies, explanation except they were busy, nothing. Five minutes later with no bagels in hand I asked for my money back and left. The cashier did not say anything when returning my money. As though I was being a difficult customer. I don't plan on returning to that place ever. read more

Delicious lunch. Had the California Sandwich (roast veggies and avocado on grilled multigrain bread) and the soup which was potato and parsnip. The sandwich was tasty and filling and the soup was lighter than I expected with a lot if fresh dill. The service could have been a touch friendlier, but was fine. We stopped in at The Bean Counter during our visit to Picton last week, and it ended up being our favourite drop-in spot for our week's stay! We even took the ferry into Picton specifically to go to The Bean Counter for some of their delicious chai tea lattes, shortbread cookies and listen to their what-seemed-to-be daily lounge singer who sang a litany of songs. This little coffee shop has the greatest atmosphere, with overstuffed arm chairs, some big leather couches, and wooden tables and chairs interspersed here and there, all fitting into this old building, built in 1835. They serve the best chai tea latte I've ever had (and I've had many), and even my husband liked it (and he doesn't like chai). Their many pastries and cookies are to-die-for. On one of our last days, the four of us tumbled in for one last visit, opting for the Bean Counter's wonderful, homemade gelato. First of all, let me just say that, for presentation alone, the owner and staff should get A+++++. Every deliciously mounded gelato flavour had swirls of actual fruit on top of it, or decorations of coffee beans, etc., making them works of art. Not only that, but which, for me as a mother of a boy who is severely allergic to soy, they had signs stating which gelatos were soy-based, making me breathe much more easily. The gelato itself was delicious, some of the best I've ever had, and I've had real Italian gelato. There were probably at least 20 flavours to choose from. All in all, a not-to-miss place when you visit quaint Picton! read more

This is my FAVOURITE place in Picton! They honestly have the best of everything .... Best sandwiches, soup, treats, lattes, and staff! The owners, Debbie and Art, are fabulous! You can always count on friendly service! In the summer, they have a little patio set up that's perfect for sipping an a vanilla bean frappé and people watch!
