I didn't have a good time at this YMCA. It makes an effort considering it's a smaller town YMCA, but considering the membership price that I pay and considering that people from Port Arthur are allowed to go wherever they want to and travel anywhere within Texas, I found a kind of ridiculous that I wasn't allowed to use the Port Arthur gym during the pandemic. I can use the Houston ones, but not Port Arthur. Membership prices are no lower though, in fact i'm getting billed when I asked to be on hold. Very annoying too. One of the main reasons I pay the YMCA prices is to be able to visit gyms in other cities. It's less than an hour from where I live. It's closer to my door than some of the Houston area locations, drive time wise. And when I was here, it wasn't a good experience. Some not very friendly associates. In any case, some of the weights are so run down and old that I got a severe injury to my thumb just trying to lift them. That's never happened to me at any gym before. They're clunky and unstable and uneven, and the weight rack is a nightmare. I saw a female employee come around and severely condescend and reprimand several male staff members and also a couple of patrons, and she was loud and nasty. One of them because he wasn't working hard enough, spraying enough, cleaning enough. The spray in my face while on equipment was too far. I'm not sure what the others were doing wrong but it was a little embarrassing. There are various other issues as well such as the shower, slippery floor, treacherous, so very dangerous, things not working properly (especially in the locker rooms and plenty of weight machines), and somebody was checking me out in a creepy way the whole time I was nekky in the shower rooms. Some of the employees are really friendly and others not so much. All in all I definitely would say it is a YMCA that I would avoid in future if possible. Also I called to ask about using the facility and they promised to call back. I was never called back. Instead I got added to their mailing list and now I receive all the promotions. Nah fam. I should give them 1 star but 2 is just for a couple of employees that were okay. And of course this Y is in Port Arthur. Not to be confused with Sport Arthur (which is at the Olympics), Snort Arthur (a cokehead), or Court Arthur (when you are trying to get Arthur to date you).

My wife has dedicated years helping and supporting students here, only to be told that her class was "geared toward kids like that," in a disrespectful and dismissive manner. No parent or staff member should ever be made to feel that children with special needs are a problem or less deserving of respect and inclusion. What's even more concerning is that the owner has allowed a newer coach to create a toxic and unprofessional atmosphere without stepping in. Leadership matters, and unfortunately it seems the professionalism and values this place once had are no longer being upheld. Because of this experience, I would not feel comfortable bringing my children back here, nor would I recommend this gym to other families.

It's a wonderful facility with tons of mat space. The instructors are extremely knowledgable and super supportive and helpful! Also, the mats are cleaned every day after practice which is awesome! The atmosphere is super friendly and all the students help each other get better at this combative martial art. The program is absolutely the best option to help you lose weight, because it's so fun you don't even realize you've exercised so much. Also you're learning a valuable and dominant form of self defense that can help you survive and function during any possible form of violence in the streets. (Hopefully you won't have to use it; but it's better to know how to handle yourself and not need it than the other way around.) As I mentioned before, everyone is super supportive and helpful of each other. And if you're nervous about coming in and getting "roughed up"; that is absolutely not the case. Beginners start slowly and everyone is mindful of new students. Also, the instructors never put a "spotlight" on students which can make some people self-conscious. Instead, the instructors show everything in detail and answer questions. Then you break into groups of 2 and practice the move. That being said, this is an excellent sport to get involved with a friend!
