Montolivo Italian Grill - This was a questionable plate of lasagna. Its taste was strange. I've had better TV dinner lasagna. Please revisit its preparation.

One-off Italian meals in the EU - 1 of 2…read more By one-off, I mean that it was a situation where you were just passing through. Why was I passing through Seville? Well, it's another way to get to the Algarve in Portugal by a nicely priced and comfortable enough motor coach ride if you couldn't find a cheap enough air ticket to Lisbon from Italy. I was walking down the street somewhere in between a strip of hotels and Seville's impressive Santa Justa train station and Montolivo caught my eye. First, I'll go with the positive things. It's very nice inside. The other is that the employees were friendly. Like others have said, they don't come around much and this was lunch and it wasn't at all busy, but when they did, they were reasonably on point. Finally, the prices were fair for their lunch offerings. So far, it sounds like everything was going fairly well. I ordered a plate of lasagna and a Sprite. As soon as the lasagna arrived, something didn't sit with me. It looked very upright, almost like a rectangular pastry slice, and its appearance and coloring were atypical. As I started to eat this lasagna, it did not taste good at all. It was rather tasteless. I'm giving them a 4 for all the other parts of the experience but the food was a 1 and that's what governs. I went into Montolivo with an open mind. That's because I have had some incredible Italian food in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile) but that could be that they are very steeped in being part of the Italian diaspora. I still dream about a cheap and delicious cannelloni lunch special near the main station in Vina del Mar, Chile (the resort beach city west of inland Santiago de Chile, the capital). It rivaled anything I've eaten in Italy. I've also been served good pasta dishes at simple diners in Quebec. That said, located but a low cost 2-hour Ryanair flight from Italy, you'd think the Spaniards could muster up the know-how to cook decent Italian food. I am a little surprised by some glowing reviews. It could be that Americans and Spaniards like anything put forth to them as being Italian food. It could be that I didn't order some other things that they might have prepared better. Just like there are Italian eateries in America that are not Italian, but Italian-American, it could be that this is a Spanish restaurant that serves up how they like to put together Italian dishes. I did not like my meal at Seville's Montolivo.

We came here as arranged by our Gate 1 group. It was a nice first night in Spain treat! We were the…read moreonly ones there, as it was 'early' (7:30) and in Spain dinner tends to be later. We had salads and dining ware on the table already when we arrived, we just had to sit down and enjoy. It was family style, so we passed dishes around as needed. The servers were experts at clearing and asking if we needed more beverages. A pitcher of sangria was brought, as well as the option of regular wine. I liked everything, esp the eggplant with sweet sauce, and the fries with beef and gravy. We had vegetarians in our group so I don't know what they ate instead, but it seems they have plenty of options for all food needs. I would go back if I get to Seville again. I wonder if they have 'regulars' or rely heavily on tour groups for business.

Take this 4/5 with a grain of salt.. Let me set the scene. Sevilla was pouring! I was wearing a…read morehuge coat and still.... My coat got soaked. So I was desperate. I had been walking all day, it had been raining all day. I was over it so I needed a quick refuge. Now, I'm weary of places with empty terraces because I can't help but wonder: why aren't people going there? But the thing that convinced me was the outside heater. I prefer to dine outside for ventilation and the conveniently placed heater looked like it had my name tattooed on it. I was received by a nice waiter, who quickly explained the menu to me. It was a sushi place, and yet here I was... looking for afternoon dessert... luckily, they had something! I ordered a wild bloom: a warm brioche with vanilla ice cream within, accompanied by red fruit and whipped cream. My god! Heaven on earth! Can you imagine? You're soaked wet & tired and you're welcomed by a heater with a dessert you've never had before?! Just off of that moment Tropiqual gets a 4/5 from me. And I'm bummed this was my first time trying this delicacy?! P.S: I used the restroom and it was fine! So yeah, good, short experience given the circumstances, hence my prior warning. But give it a try! Maybe your experience will differ from mind. And that's okay right? That's what makes it all interesting!
