Always busy the bar staff still manages to be friendly and serve a good pint. It is in need of some updating in the bar, but it is clean as are the toilets. (Even after the annual onion fayre which was no mean feat) Accommodation is available, but I have never used it so you'll have to take your chances there. A beer garden is available, but it is on a slope and I'm not sure if it's child friendly. Locals are ok and I've never seen any drunken Idiots. Parking is available. A good place for a pint.

We were incredibly pleased with how lovely the place is. Great outdoor dining area, and incredibly cosy inside. The staff were incredibly courteous, and the food was just unbelievably good. I'll admit, when I first ordered, I did think that they were a little expensive. However, it turns out that was because I was expecting the food to be of a lower standard. What they brought out to us was worth every penny. This is a fantastic little place, a hidden gem. Worth driving over an hour to go to, seriously.

May Hill came up on the National Trust web site as a nice place for a walk and the AA web site said just over an hour so have got bored of everywhere local we decided to go on a Sunday. Naturally lunch would be a good precursor to a walk (as long as not too heavy) and we decided on this one over the Glasshouse Inn as it was on the north side of May Hill and closer to a recommened NT walk. I emailed the pub late on the Saturday but didn't get a response, I was asking if they offered more choice that just roasts which were listed on their web site anyway we decided to take a flyer and rolled up there at 12.30 aiming to beat the 1pm rush. As many people do we took a wrong turn in the village taking a right too early the web site says turn right after 100 yds but 10 yds after first right is the correct right and my car doesn't measure yards look for the pub sign before turning is my advice! Parking was easy in the upper car park, no hassle, plenty of room. It was very quiet when we arrived, a few cars outside but fewer people inside curiously but it picked up. Ambience was spot on, friendly staff behind counter, nice terrace which is where we took residence. Toilets were clean with nice accessories and paper towels and a hand dryer. Starter of fishcakes for me and artichoke salad were both excellent and we both had the pork which was excellent. We also indulged in a dessert, choc/ginger torte for me and choc brownie for her with a choice of cream or ice cream. The was followed by coffee (unlimited supply is a nice touch) and Earl grey tea, both which we didn't realise at the time were included in the 3 course set menu meal. The total for this with a pint of ale and a lime and lemonade was a modest £38.40, closer to the cost of one persons meal in other more fashionable parts of Gloucestershire. It was a lucky dip that ended in a wonderful meal and a very nice experience thanks to the pub owners. We rocked up around 4pm and were told by a staff member in the parking lot, who kindly offered to take our photo, that they were probably out of roast being it was so late in the day but he would speak to the chef. 20 mins later we had a couple of beverages at a nice table in the lounge overlooking the water and a delicious beef roast dinner with root vegetables, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. We cleaned our plates and followed lunch up with a sweet and tasty slice of homemade carrot cake. It was absolutely fantastic. The staff were ever so friendly and really looked after us. What a great little find and we are so pleased to have stumbled upon it! Now, hours and a couple sofa snoozes later, we are still stuffed!

And no, in real ale country we don't use sparklers. Pints are filled to the top, if you don't mind, none of that half-a-pint-o-head business in here! Yes, in this CAMRA awarded pub you can expect to find the finest brews. The antiquated sit comfortably next to the whipper snappers and drink harmoniously until close, enjoying the lamp heated sheltered garden and cosy interior. Under the steady headship of Steve I don't think I've ever spent a night in here unsatisfied with the ambience, booze and company - this place is the only place to go in Dursley town.

They do insist on using brioche buns (uhk), but they burgers are juicy and meaty and being sat watching the river gently push past makes up for this one annoyance. We did order a cheese board, but can only presume that they made a mistake because we were brought about three times the usual amount. the friendly staff were happy to bring us a massive box of crackers so we did what was needed and ate the lot. Parking can be tricky, and it's quite a popular spot in the summer. They have some toys out for kids, but there are probably more family friendly spots.
