Hard to fault which for me was unusual…read more. How did we end up there from Birmingham? May Hill came up on the National Trust web site as a nice place for a walk and the AA web site said just over an hour so have got bored of everywhere local we decided to go on a Sunday. Naturally lunch would be a good precursor to a walk (as long as not too heavy) and we decided on this one over the Glasshouse Inn as it was on the north side of May Hill and closer to a recommened NT walk. I emailed the pub late on the Saturday but didn't get a response, I was asking if they offered more choice that just roasts which were listed on their web site anyway we decided to take a flyer and rolled up there at 12.30 aiming to beat the 1pm rush. As many people do we took a wrong turn in the village taking a right too early the web site says turn right after 100 yds but 10 yds after first right is the correct right and my car doesn't measure yards look for the pub sign before turning is my advice! Parking was easy in the upper car park, no hassle, plenty of room. It was very quiet when we arrived, a few cars outside but fewer people inside curiously but it picked up. Ambience was spot on, friendly staff behind counter, nice terrace which is where we took residence. Toilets were clean with nice accessories and paper towels and a hand dryer. Starter of fishcakes for me and artichoke salad were both excellent and we both had the pork which was excellent. We also indulged in a dessert, choc/ginger torte for me and choc brownie for her with a choice of cream or ice cream. The was followed by coffee (unlimited supply is a nice touch) and Earl grey tea, both which we didn't realise at the time were included in the 3 course set menu meal. The total for this with a pint of ale and a lime and lemonade was a modest £38.40, closer to the cost of one persons meal in other more fashionable parts of Gloucestershire. This is one of those pubs that I don't want to recommend to too many people because it might mean one day I can't get a table but this time.. The walk was excellent too, more info on NT web site.

A great location, a cut above the usual pub grub. Imaginative menu, locally sourced (Old Spot pork…read morereared in the orchard behind the pub). Lunches are particularly good value. Wine is also better than the norm, even in leafy, wealthy Gloucestershire. Wine opub of year 2010.

Wonderful pub deep in the Wye Valley, Herefordshire. The Saracens Head Inn is situated right on the…read morebank of the River Wye and is both a bed and breakfast and a pub/restaurant. We had reserved a table for five on the day and when we arrived we were taken to the nicest possible table, with a window overlooking the river and with ample space. The pub has both indoor and outdoor seating and a nice bar. The staff were all very friendly and the same bar staff simultaneously run the famous "Symonds Yat Hand Ferry" just outside the restaurant. It's a pretty interesting thing to see, as people come to the bar requesting to get to the other side of the river and a barman will literally come out from behind the bar, head off outside and take them (hand pulling a rope) over to the other side of the river! The beer selection here is pretty extensive with lots of local beers such as Wye Valley Brewery and Ledbury. My brother in law and I sampled 5 or 6 different ones over lunch and were impressed. The food here was also excellent with a nice variety of different items to chose from, from traditional English pub fare to Indian dishes. I went with the Haddock and Chips which was fried to a golden crisp and nothing short of delicious. The rest of my family had similarly good food and everyone was left satisfied! Overall the Saracens Head was fabulous and this is a magnificent and picturesque place to visit in general if you're ever in the Wye Valley/ Symonds Yat/ Herefordshire area, with lots of hiking, river cruises and just admiring of nature to do in the area; can't wait to return!

A large and varied menu sets the taste buds a-tingling in anticipation. We ordered a fish platter to share and goats cheese beignets followed by a bowl of mussels, pie of the day (beef in ale with mushrooms) and fish & chips twice (one kids size). The food was fantastic but beware the large portions if you suffer with a small stomach! Luckily none of us did and all the food was enjoyed immensely along with pints of Wye Valley pale ale, an interesting brew called Butty Bach and Symonds cider. The landlord was a very pleasant chap who kindly gave us a lift back to collect our car as we couldn't stomach the walk back up to Christchurch. Pay them a visit, enjoy their beer and food and write an honest review as they seem to have suffered from one or two of those 'anti-Trip' advisor fiends! Well done Saracens Head and thanks!

The young lady was so helpful but said there would be a wait of about 90 minutes. No problem to us as we then able to have a couple of drinks before hand. So, a TIP. This pub is brilliant so nearly always full. BOOK A TABLE. A few people turned up after us but were told they couldn't be seated. We were so lucky. The food was out of this world with pricing more down to earth. Service could not be beaten by a wonderful staff of young ladies who, luckily for us, had a great sense of humour. They needed it serving us. Lovely pub with an unusual interior décor which went with the area. A really good wine choice for such a small place. Normally it's red, white or rose. Now to knock a member of management. The board showed two dessert wines, which I love. Unfortunately these, at the time, were unavailable because the owner had gone to Spain with the cabinet key, I was told. Sorry, Richard you nearly lost a star. Just joking. Well worth the trek to find this diamond in the Forest of Dean. Trust me, you will love it but, remember, BOOK ahead.

A lovely local pub in Winterbourne Down…read more This has been my family's local pub for around 20 years and it hasn't changed one bit. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

This place has tons of character and a great choice of beers ciders and ales all at a very reasonable price. There is a beautiful big garden out back or benches out front if you fancy just sitting and watching the world drift by. Pete the barman is one of lifes winners always there with a warm welcome and a joke or two for you to enjoy. Stick a lepord print thong on him and marvel at the way he transform into Peter Stringfellow oh yeah ! All in all a class bozzer in the country.
