KYNO 940AM Fresno since July 19 beams its mostly automated "Boss Radio" format to cover the Bakersfield to Sacramento region, Central California coast, and likely out of limits, especially after dark when the atmosphere makes radio waves frisky. Car-radio oldies fans have endured the grim side of the story through the last few years: * KMPH 840 Modesto owner Harry Pappas presented a "Boss"-style "Graffiti Gold" concept in 2013, but in vain, selling the station to a religion-format broadcaster in 2014. * KZPO King's Radio 103.3 FM, Lindsay-Visalia, turned out the lights on its automated nostalgia party in July 2020, ultimately paying the piper after running afoul of FCC regulations for decades, according to Insideradio.com. * KSUR 1260 (L.A. Oldies) renowned owner Saul Levine, 95, late last year replaced '50s-'70s rock with syndicated classical music programming, branded as KMZT (K-Mozart), reprising a move he made in 2011. KYNO's 1430 spot has been filled by former 940 occupant, ESPN Radio (KFIG), another of One Putt Broadcasting's seven-station Fresno radio empire. The company says the station swap is a tribute to the founding 75 years ago of KYNO 1300AM, the laboratory-to-be from which programmer Bill Drake and owner Gene Chenault developed the format that propelled their clients', some imitators', and KYNO's ratings in their 1960s-mid'70s historical heyday. Streaming oldies from the 1950s-70s remains an option at kynofresno.com.
