I was still a little wary, as certain burger joints have conditioned me to expect disappointing token offerings for the veggos. (I'm looking at you, Huxtaburger.) But Bottle of Milk delivered! Five different vegetarian burger options on the menu. Five! With a variety of different protein bases: lentil, tofu, or mushroom. Don't worry carnivores - there are also plenty of meaty options on the menu, including breakfast burgers with bacon. My friend and I both ordered the mushroom and halloumi. The verdict: delicious and filling. Savoury portobello mushrooms were topped with a generous potion of halloumi. Grilled capsicum, rocket and tomato relish rounded out the flavours. The hot chips were thick, delicious, and crispy. Order these! The outdoor tables were packed, and the indoor seating was full as well. I do recommend this place. Lorne is a great little beach town on the Great Ocean Highway and is a stone's throw from the water. It is a welcoming and inviting place. you come in and order from the counter first. I ordered the chicken burger and plate of chips (Yankees, this means fries). Along with this of course was a delicious and tangeriney tasting lager. The food came relatively quickly to the table. My chicken burger was pretty good, although the bun was oversized compared to the piece of chicken. Otherwise tasty. The fries were super good, as in I'd like to take them back to the US with me. I had been eyeing this place since I got to Lorne. My first day I went over and grabbed a flat white for my walk along the beach. A decent cup of coffee. I decided to go back and grab a burger from them before I headed back to Melbourne. Their BLAT was really good. They had the right amount of everything, from the bacon to the homemade mayo (which is so so good). Their buns are so light and fluffy and the perfect addition to wrap up the whole meal. Sure the burgers are tasty, (the buns are the real head turners here), but the reason I came back through Lorne again and again was for another hit of their beautiful, beautiful coffee. Serving up 7 Seeds from a take away window, the only thing that could've made the experience better was if the weather had heated up to a normal summer temperature. Bottle of Milk has what are easily the best burgers I've had in Australia. I'd almost to have include all of Australasia, but Astrolabe in Mt. Manganui, NZ slightly edges out this delicious locale. The burgers, they are GIGANTIC. Unless you're starving, split one with a friend and get a side of fries with their amazing chili mayo. Not *sweet* chili, but properly spicy chili. It's a bit pricey, but in line with what you'd expect from a similar restaurant in a major city like Melbourne. The Hawaii burger (highly recommend) was $15, with $6 fries, $1.50 sauce and a $4 drink, for a total meal cost (for two) of $25. read more

This casual shop is well cared for and great for groups and families. With an ample menu, there is a burger for everyone, even vegetarians. My group enjoyed the BOM, an Aussie style burger; the Blue cheese burger, smells worse than it tastes; and the Nelly - bacon and avo, oh yeah! An order of hot chips is enough to share between two people, and has a nice sprinkle of herbs. You can also select your choice of sauce - tomato, chili mayo or regular mayo. The chili mayo is just right, not too spicy. The let down had to be the milkshake which was advertised as a thick chocolate malt. There was nothing thick about it just chocolate milk. I didn't even taste any malt flavour. If you are after a freak shake, this isn't the place. As we were bumping along down the Great Ocean Road this past December, Lorne was destined to be our lunchtime destination. And of all the restaurants on the main street of town, The Bottle of Milk was the busiest. While there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, almost every table was taken. Thankfully, we found a little sheltered patio in the back area of the restaurant, went to the counter to order (lots of variety!), and sat down to wait. It was a bit of a long wait, so we hoped that we would at least get some decent burgers out of it. Thankfully, the milkshakes were quite delicious, and tided us over till the food arrived. The B.O.M: an intense, un-apologetically big beef burger, though nothing my brother's adolescent metabolism couldn't handle. Cheese and avocado salad roll: consisted mostly of vegetables, and the avocado kept slipping out, but overall it was decent. Tofu burger: somewhat spicy, so I didn't eat a lot. Magic mushroom: my personal favorite of the four. Vegetarian with a great punch of umami, and a fantastic balance of ingredients. Would definitely order another one of these if I (somehow) find myself in the area again. read more

On sunny main street of Lorne, is a super surfy cafe that has wonderful big windows, sunshine-yellow splashes of colour, wood/cement/cotton decor and big booths for sharing with friends. As i was doing a drive by for brunch, I chose to get a BLAT (Bacon, Lettuce, Avo & Tomato) burger and a take away coffee. Both were prepared quickly due to the quiet time of the morning, and it was actually really lovely to take in the relationships of the staff while I was waiting. There was clearly a great camaraderie within the team, a great friendship between each other and this makes the environment a lovely place to be in. Dreary-eyed and tent-bound for four freezing nights at the Falls Music Festival, my best friend and I were craving "good coffee, good bread, good eggs and clean utensils". Thankfully, a fellow Falls-goer had recommended The Bottle of Milk to me as the best coffee in Lorne. So, very early on New Year's Day, we took a seat at the huge communal outdoor tables and got exactly what we were so badly craving - almost! I was, I must admit, initially disappointed that the coffee was take-away only and a little shocked that the breakfast burgers came in paper bags. That initial disappointment was replaced with a respect for their inventive method of not having to wash anything up! Choosing to forget about the extra wastage of paper bags and cups, I devoured my breakfast burger full of fresh greens, beetroot, avocado, cheese and two deliciously plump and perfectly cooked eggs. The coffee, although not incredible by Melbourne standards, was a surprisingly tasty blend I wasn't expecting to get in Lorne. I ordered a second for the long drive home ahead of me. This place does variations of burgers and fries and not much else. Today, we had the cheeseburger and fries. Burger is average, not spectacular and how hard is it to screw up fries? They were okay too. The extra 1$ for ketchup was an unnecessary annoyance. The chocolate malt milkshake was high quality in an old school tin cup.
