Surrounded by funny cards, cute trinkets and displays of warm colorful books, papers, ribbons and wrap, I hoped to feel as loved by the staff as I felt towards these pretty paper products. Yet as I chose a few stationary sets and slowly meandered to the cash register, I did so alone. My check out transaction was strictly business, and nothing more. And that was it. No warm fuzzy feeling, no invitation to come back soon, nothing. I certainly did not take pleasure in your company.

While the store was not crowded on this weekday afternoon, we could barely scavenger any customer service. Even once a salesperson was assigned to work with us, she did not offer much in terms of insights or attentiveness. About a half hour in, our sales rep was replaced with someone else (I get it, employees gotta eat) but our momentary joy of having renewed luck at better service became a hollow, fleeting hope. The best part of this would-be shopping trip was learning that TPYC can take your idea and design around it for less than traditionally found in the big brand heavy-hitters. Definitely a nice touch but a semi-useless feature without attentive staff to help get those creative juices flowing. Shoppers come to brick-and-mortar establishments to get advice from field experts who have had much more experience in card design than your average member of the public. This we definitely did not find at TPYC and, after an hour of poking around albums, the dream team left with little to show for their efforts.

We spent about an hour in there. There's two levels, where books are well presented and deals featured. You walk through the shelves, and you'll see the different genres featured and bins with sale items clearly marked. The upper floor has poetry, photography, gardening, and cookbooks. The street floor has fiction, science books, and women's literature. These are just the genres that I remember. The other side of the store has antiques and other well curated items for sale. You can tell that the owners take a lot of pride in the presentation of their store. I loved it! I recommend anyone in the area to stop by and check it out.

I have enjoyed getting gifts for my daughter and all of the little kids in my life. However, I came in yesterday looking for a Balance bike for my daughter for her second birthday. I found one, they only had one left, and I bought it. Unfortunately, when I got it home although the box said that the seat was adjustable, it was only adjustable forward and backwards, not up and down.Which is a bit odd considering it says it's for 18 month to four-year-old children. My daughter was too tall for the bike. I brought it back today because there was no way she could use it. The girl who sold it to me yesterday said no problem and then she got another woman to come help me. I assume this is the store owner(a middle-age woman behind the counter). She was incredibly rude. She told me that she's gonna have to eat the cost as a small business and rolled her eyes, and then said that it's not actually returnable, but that she would give me a refund. Ok? You're mad at me? For doing business with you? Because something had what seems like false advertising on the box? It wasn't broken, but it did not adjust. I'm not sure how a four-year-old would be able to use that bike (The age was 18 months to four years old with an adjustable seat). Considering that seat doesn't adjust up and down makes it a bit odd to advertise such a large age gap. I left the store thinking that she was clearly mad at me and upset that I had returned the bike.That attitude at a children's store is just not the way to do business. As a business owner, sometimes that's just the cost of doing business. Sometimes you have to do the right thing regardless of whether or not that is in your financial best interest. I don't think I'll be back to shop here anymore. Which is too bad because I love supporting local businesses here in Baltimore.

Then they reopened on weekends only, confounding the usual week walker--until now! Yeht is opening during the week. That, along with an atypical blackboard sign, lured me in. The owner, a very nice young woman filled me in on the details: basically, colorful and quality home, tea and sundry item (artsy couch/bed pillows, anyone?) sourced and fair-traded from other countries and cultures. Every item has a cultural of family ritual related to it, further informing your purchases. Besides some silky vegan dark chocolate, one of which infused with champagne, I left with a see-through tin with wooden measuring spoon of some antioxidant-rich, low caffeine purple tea they were sampling.
