Whilst we drove, winding through country lanes and forgotten roads, we decided we would find a lovely little country pub for a romantic Valentines' weekend dinner - and what a find. We walked in to tables dimly lit with wicker lamps that looked out over the Huddersfield suburbs. We couldn't have found a more beautiful view as the sun was setting and streetlights began to glitter. The landlord was instantly welcoming and was baffled to know that we had found him by chance, as apparently a satnav is a must-have to find it. We shared our money woes as poverty-striken students, so he directed us to the ridiculously cheap lunch menu - the portions were huge! The boards around the bar advertised live music and pub quizzes, along with messages of love and life for upcoming Valentines Day. We really couldn't have found a more idyllic, friendly place for a late Saturday meal and I would recommend it to anyone out for a spontaneous road trip!

This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

The chef/food; Quite frankly, was embarrassing. I would not eat here again. I ordered a steak. The menu describes it as being served with sizzling onions and seasoned chips. Firstly the steak; I asked for well done. There was blood in the middle. I had no option but to return it. It came back chronically burned. The chips were not seasoned. The portion was tiny and there were so many bad ones with huge black eyes in them that when I went through them to remove the bad ones there were only 17 chips left on my plate. As a chef myself, I would not have presented them with black eyes and bad potato clearly showing. Next came the onions. First critique is that they were badly chopped. All different thicknesses and shapes. Again, no care in the presentation, but, also causing a problem in that they couldn't be evenly cooked.They arrived raw. Not a bit raw but completely raw. There wasn't even a slight colouring of brown on them. I politely pointed it out to the waitress who took them. Again, the second time, they were raw. I took the plate back a third time and said it says sizzling onions please will you ask the chef to cook them properly for me. I don't like raw onion. They came back so black and burned that they were inedible. Absolutely jet black! He had his heat too high and absolutely destroyed them. My friend asked for a salad and specified no tomatoes. It came full of tomato. We picked out 7 pieces. I genuinely think this chef is untrained or, lazy and doesn't want to put the time required in to cook things appropriately. It was immediately obvious that he has his heat too high and is cooking for quickness rather than quality and presentation. It's a shame as it is a great venue.

I'd love to come up with pub names and be creative. 'The Antfarm and Wormery'. 'The Snake and Apple'. 'The Rat and Vivisectionist'. 'The Griffin and Minotaur.' Here we have simple old Horse and Jockey, which resides in its splendid form on the ever popular Chorlton Green. And it might be mock Tudor, but as you can see from previous reviews, this isn't something to sniff at. It looks lovely, what more do you want? In Chorlton you'll find the operative word is 'family-friendly', remember, this is the 'burbs, and here be anklebiters. But hey, kid-haters, don't let that put you off. You'd be missing out on its summer sun-trap and winter crackling open fire. An all season pleaser? Who could say no? It's a roomy yet cosy place that can be hired for functions and parties, and the list of cask ales is seemingly neverending. Just come in and try, that's the best advice I can give you. Food ticks all the boxes - locally sourced, seasonal, reasonably priced and cooked fresh. Crispy Yorkshires, fish and chips, soups and crusty bread, open sandwiches, salads and snacks, some excellent veggie options and don't get me started on the lush puds. We were drawn originally by the story that Mick Jagger use to go in here as he lived nearby. Then we were drawn by the meal prices, so we decided to pull into their car park and give it a whirl. First thing I noticed was how dark Wuthering Heights type building it is. I wondered if a Heathcliff was behind the bar but sadly there were only young ladies and a big tall chef who looked nothing like my hero Heathcliff. Inside, the rooms are all opened planned and large and there is a separate dining area. Once we were settled, we decided to order and I chose something I had never really had before and that was a steak filled with feta cheese. When I say it was filled, I mean stuffed. The steak was made into a ball shaped and once you cut into it, steaming hot feta cheese came pouring out. I would recommend this restaurant for any time of day, it is not only fantastic but cheap and cheerful.

Many say that this pub would get a lot more custom if it wasn't on the 'wrong side' of Piccadilly Station as it were. However this does mean that it gets a nice eclectic clientele, including office suits at lunchtime which often suggests quality food (smart types are picky about their food, I've met plenty of them). The food itself is your hearty, tasty pub grub from upmarket peppery steak pies and gammon and eggs to sirloin steaks and corned beef hash. The chips are particularly nice. The beers include the Marston's standard Burton, Pedigree and specials like Long Hop, as well as many festival ales such as Everard's, Brains and Ringwood's. Down to earth, upbeat and friendly staff serve the pub's varied customers, creating a jovial and relaxed atmosphere. Certainly a worthy addition to the guide.

It was a busy Sunday afternoon as ManU v Liverpool was on the television so the entire town rocked in at about the same time we did. As a result, there was a slight push and shove to get to the bar and our food took a little while to arrive but it was worth it. We managed to score a table in the corner, away from the tvs, and settled in with some excellent local ale. The staff were friendly and took our food orders efficiently and warned us that there was a 40 minute wait for the suet pies. We were ok with this. Unfortunately the 40 minutes turned out to be over an hour but considering the number of people in there and the top quality nosh that arrived at our tables we were happy to wait. It was gooooooood food - big servings of warm, hearty food that you expect from a local pub. We were all patting our bellies by the end of it, feeling very satisfied. Definitely a winner for anyone out walking in the area.

The bar area which has TVs showing the footy got very busy whilst we were there, so your visit might not be as quiet as you'd have hoped. Six hand pumps including three local ales from Greenfield (Silver Owl was a cracking pint) and Millstone breweries are served together with some seriously hearty home cooked food. The portions are generous and everything was delicious. There was a bit of a wait but the quality of the food more than made up for that.

The inside is small and so is the bar area so I quickly checked out their menu, saw the option of a fish finger butty, and it was done. A few moments later it was brought outside to me and I was amazed. It was incredible! so much bigger than I was expecting, and the chips.. Oh the chips!!! I may go out on a limb here and say these could be the best chips I have had in Manchester! They must have been triple cooked, very hot and fluffy and seasoned with rock salt and rosemary. MORE OF THESE PLEASE!

Positioned just off Rochdale road (5 mins walk from the NQ) and surrounded by some pretty busy roads and nondescript buildings and warehouses, The Angel looks like it could be close to being boarded up. Wander inside though and take in what is a classic boozer with long bar, lots of seating and even an old piano in the corner. I went at lunch time for a bite to eat so wasn't really in the market for a pint but the selection was fantastic with some great local breweries such as Hawkshead well represented. Amongst all the standard rubbish lagers, they also had around 5 excellent imported German ones which showed they could be a place to take friends who haven't yet been converted to the joys of the proper beer scene! The prices were around £3.50 a pint which is pretty good value I think. The aforementioned food was excellent with me enjoying a wild boar moussaka (all served with a greek salad) for £8, just one of the exciting and enticing options of their classic pub food with a twist menu. They also said they have a more formal dining room with a different menu upstairs so this will have to wait till another day when I have more time on my hands. Overall if you're after a classic pub with great food and drinks then get yourself here - I'll be back soon, that's for sure!
