From everyone that works there to all the residents they all look out and care for one another. It starts at the top. If you have a caring staff that feels appreciated it shows in their work. And each person that worked there genuinely became part of the family. My dad received great care there until he passed. Even after he passed they put together a Celebration of Life. They invited family of those that passed and the residents to honor those that passed. They played a video montage they put together and whoever wanted to say a few words was encouraged. I never write reviews. I know everyone says that but I honestly don't. I feel like I need to…read morethough. Keep in mind, I have never actually seen the facility but what I saw today was beautiful. I was at Walgreens in Mineola and their bus was parked outside. They must bring the elderly there to go shopping. As I was walking to my car I noticed the man ( assuming the bus driver ) helping them off of the bus. I had to actually stop and watch. He was so sweet and gentle to each one that he helped off of the bus. He spoke to every single one of them as he helped them down the steps. It warmed my heart so much I actually called and also told them there. In this day and age, all the crap going on and all the terrible people out there, this was honestly wonderful to see. Especially when you hear that a lot of assisted living facilities lack patience with the elderly. Mostly when nobody is looking. And he didn't think anyone was. That made it even nicer. This man looked truly special and they are lucky to have him as apart of their staff.

It was very clean. The facility she moved to in Florida was not as nice, but apparently Florida is generally less patient oriented than NY. My mother-in-law moved into the Bristal late last year after a bad fall had resulted in a long hospitalization and rehab stint at Parker Jewish, a total nightmare. We were not comfortable letting her return to her own apartment and after a reasonable search had selected The Bristal at Garden City, a new facility that had opened only a few months prior. We can only say one thing. This facility is outstanding. Dina, the general manager is a wonderful person and has assembled a team including John, in charge of recreation, and a chef, whose name I don't know, who has made my mother-in-law's stay thus far to be an easy transition into assisted living. She loves the food, and boasts about all of the staff and how friendly and genuinely interested they are in both her needs and her overall enjoyment. Whether it is the medical team, the front office staff, the housekeeping or the maintenance staff, everyone is overly courteous and nice to both the client and their families. Starting from the initial sales with Tiffany, to the gentlemen who connect the cable TV or caulk the windows, everything is handled professionally and expeditiously without a problem. If you have decided to place your loved one in the hands of an assisted living facility, this is definitely the place for you. Bingo, crafts, word games, movies, socials, educational classes, day trips, they offer enough to make their clients feel that they are important, by continuously engaging them in safe and stimulating activities.

The social worker is extremely unprofessional and had the nerve to talk to me after hours intoxicated and tell me how bad my loved one was. But where else was she going to go. She would get upset with my LO and treat her like a child. Never once did they help me find another placement. They would just send her to the hospital to get a psyc evaluation. I stayed because I was scared and didn't know where else to go etc. I should have moved my LO out after she was beaten up by her roommate when the facility knew they weren't getting along. I felt helpless. I thought this was our life now. They never sent my LO to the hospital for that. I thankfully found a new place that is so nice and respectful and helpful. I would never recommend Amber Court in Westbury.

Some staff don't seem to care at all, one even telling her that she was on break, and couldn't open her room door to assist her, as she's wheelchair bound. They accept enhanced Medicaid, which is why she's there ( she's 95 ). " recreation" is a joke. Residents sleeping with a tv on... not much else going on in the room. Anybody can just walk in to the place without having to say where they are going..... they have a face recognition machine, but don't use it. My father was in Mercy Hospital for almost two weeks when we recognized he was not going to make…read moreit. The Hospice at Mercy said he was not critical enough for their in-patient services, so we had the choice of Dad going back to his Assisted Living home or to a nursing home to die. Assisted Livings are a social model where people live who need daily assistance. Dad had been at the AL for 1 1/2 years at this point and it was his home. The hospital Hospice handed me a list of agencies that provide Home Health Aides for end-of-life work. The only option was to hire a third-party care agency to administer this kind of care 24/7 for as long as Dad lasted. After a maddening 2 days calling every agency on the list, THANK GOD I found Better Home. Right away, they were a cut above many of the agencies I talked to. The intake person was competent and thoughtful of my difficult circumstances and worked to guide me though several decisions. They also could provide experienced Aides within a couple of days as opposed to several agencies I called. Paying immediately before even discussing what was needed was the opening gambit from one agency I encountered! At the AL, we were so lucky to have the Better Home Aides who really knew their business. They were competent, caring, informative and experienced. Dying is hell and witnessing it is sobering. Dad lasted 1 1/2 weeks in Hospice and my brother and I were there participating in his care almost every day. The Aides welcomed our presence and educated us. They were respectful of our needs in letting go of our Dad. I am so grateful to BH for the massive assistance they provided. Especially, I want to mention and thank publicly Sonia, Victoria, Leonard, Delphine (overnight), the very kind intake nurse who came Day 1(cannot recall name), and everyone I dealt with in the office such as Karen and the Financial person (cannot recall name). Their competence across the board made such a difference during the maelstrom of dying. Dying at the AL had hidden costs. The Mercy Hospital Hospice Good Shepherd provided Medicare-covered Hospice Services such as having an RN (Jerry) very helpfully guiding us. GS also provided the bed, oxygen, and some supplies to get us started. They provide a mandated 13 months of bereavement services, also. The AL provided "Room and Board" (no board as Dad could no longer eat), cleaning, and did the massive amounts of laundry we had. They also lent an Aide here and there to assist turning Dad. Long term AL Aides who knew us came in to cheer Dad and us, but were not involved in the care at this point. The rest of the work and direction was provided by the Better Homes Aides I mentioned above. The 24/7 Aides were $32.50/hour, but that added up to approximately $5000 for the first week. The AL had already been paid for the month so this third-party care was additional. There was also lag time in getting needed supplies, so I had to go to a med supply store myself a few times. The hospital Hospice told me they would "pick up" 4 hours of care/day from agencies on that phone list that I was originally handed. That was eventually true, but I had to fight for that discount during the 1 1/2 weeks Dad was dying and I was at his bedside. I wholeheartedly recommend Better Home for many of the reasons stated above. There is cost involved but the competent help they provided was invaluable to our family.

Sometimes you have to try a few aides to find the right fit for your family - the right fit for us has been Blanca. Unesh is our aide coordinator, and he has done an excellent job with communications, and trying to find the right person. Raj is the Operations Manager, and he has been a big help guiding my family with perspective in the home aide industry, and with Medicaid decisions. He is always accessible and has also been a pleasure to work with. I hope to meet the owner one day - she is a former nurse, and therefore brings a great perspective to a company that cares for people in their homes.
