When I heard the Bubble Man passed, I was crushed. Even though I don't live in Buffalo anymore, everytime I drove or walked past that Allentown/Elmwood intersection and I saw those bubbles coming from his window, it brought me joy and excitement. He became a part of the Buffalo identity...the Bubble Man and Buffalo became synonymous and intertwined. Apparently his name was Chuck. In my heart, Chuck will always remain the bubble man. I never met him, but I know him, his bubbles, and they will always be a part of Buffalo culture to me. Pure joy - the emotion evoked for anyone who had the pleasure of walking or driving down Allen and being hit by a parade of bubbles. I enjoyed seeing the magical little bubbles float down from his apartment window high above the Elmwood and Allen intersection from when I was a kid, to now having my own. He became such a staple, that it was almost concerning when there were no bubbles. Where was he? Is he okay? The hours he spent sitting in the window to sprinkle some magic on the passers by... I am so grateful for those. So sad to hear we lost this Buffalo legend. Rest In Peace Bubbleman. You've left behind a real legacy and lots of special memories. Cheers to you. read more

Okay, we all know how much of a living legend The Bubble Man is. Bubbles are such a simple joy. You don't have to be a little kid to find them pleasant. Don't tell me you're not at least a little bit thrilled when you blow bubbles. When they decorate the space around you, there's absolute wonderment in the moment. I've seen the Bubble Man's bubbles many times. He'll blow them during the Allentown Art Festival, you'll see them on a hot summer day...you can't really predict his bubbles. I don't think he runs on a frequent schedule. But, like clockwork, you'll find yourself on Allen one day and spot a glimmer out of the corner of your eye, spying bubbles floating in the air at the Allen/Elmwood intersection. Whether you're a pedestrian or driving in your car, the joy that comes from what the Bubble Man does touches every one of us. You can't just EXPECT the Bubble Man to be blowing bubbles when you walk by. It has to happen by chance. That's what makes it special. I was on Allen the other day, walking down to get a grilled cheese. It was a little bit warmer than it had been in recent days, and I didn't realize it had started raining when I left. I had forgotten to grab my umbrella, so I was kind of in a hurry to get to where I was going. I reached that intersection, and even though it was raining, the Bubble Man was at work. Blowing bubbles even in the rain? Wow. Iconic. It made me forget all my worries for a second, and suddenly I didn't really care how wet my clothes were getting. All that I thought about in that moment was pure happiness. All because of some bubbles. read more

I've visited the Bubble Man on a number of occasions throughout my tenure in Buffalo and have had such inconsistent experiences. I always pause at the corner of Allen & Elmwood with lofty expectations, but I don't get why this is a Buffalo tradition, nor why locals go crazy for it. Here's why: 1: Bubble size is totally inconsistent. If you're going to commit to bubblery as a career path, you'd think that one would have the decency to perfect one's craft before presenting it to the world. 2: The Bubble Man is no doubt keen to Allen/Elmwood's erratic wind conditions, but he continues to recklessly spray bubbles into the street with minimal consideration of where they might land. I feel that this creates a hazardous condition for drivers (who might ultimately swerve to avoid a rogue bubble) and disorients pedestrians. 3. The Bubble Man concept has already been beaten to death in cities like New York and San Francisco. I'm thrilled with the revitalization of Allentown, but I don't know that the Bubble Man will stand the test of time in a gentrifying neighborhood. If you're looking for more worthwhile pursuits in the Elmwood Village, I strongly recommend the Lady in White or even Eric Starchild. He'd love to show you some jewelry he made. read more

The First Time There Were Just Tons Of Bubbles Floating Down In The Intersection (While At The Light), Look Up There Out Of The Upper Window Was A Man And A Bubble Wand... Did A School Field Trip To The Theater Of Youth, Just Down The Block And Had To Point It Out To The Kids As They Left The Buses. On The Way Back out To Load After, Most Looked For Him And Waved. I did laugh when I saw people review the Bubble Man. If you give this guy less than 5 stars, there is something wrong with you. I mean, the man blows bubbles just for the pure joy of blowing bubbles! Who doesn't love bubbles? I have a toddler so you have no idea the amount of time I spend amusing him while just mindlessly waving a wand around the backyard, but the Bubble Man makes this an art. He does this purely for the love of bubbles. I don't know long this man has lived here or done this. I recall it in the late 90's, so probably at least 20 years. That is dedication. I lived down on Allen in the mid 2000's and of all the weird shit I would see, the Bubble Man and his bubbles was always comforting. Is the Lady in White still a thing in Buffalo? Driving to work down Elmwood was always a mixed feeling until I hit Allen & Elmwood and saw those bubbles coming out of the window above Jim's Steakout! The Bubble man has been an area legend and reality for a long time. I never realized how often the bubbles are activated until I started driving to work down Elmwood. What a mood lifter.
