I stayed here recently for a wedding, and while this may be the nicest resort on St. Croix, that's grading on a very generous curve. If you're used to mid- to high-end resorts on other Caribbean islands, this place won't hold up in terms of value, service, or basic execution. Check-in was a mess. We booked our room as part of the wedding block, showed up with a confirmation in hand, and were told they couldn't find our reservation. A 15-minute backroom search later, they "found" it, but the room wasn't ready... at 5 PM. Instead of offering us say a complimentary bar drink or spa discount, we got a vague "we'll get it ready soon." We killed two hours in the lobby waiting. The room itself was a throwback to summer camp. The A/C unit is incredibly loud, something everyone in the wedding party complained about. We found a millipede on night one, and what looked unmistakably like mouse droppings. We requested a deep clean the next day. Despite hanging the "service room now" sign and confirming multiple times, housekeeping just didn't show up. The resort has a handful of restaurants. Service was generally friendly, but painfully slow. Dinner at the main restaurant took over an hour to arrive after ordering, and the table next to us waited 90 minutes. At the Mermaid Café, menu descriptions didn't match what arrived (a curry coconut pasta that had no coconut, a mango salad without mango). The banana shake was decent. As for breakfast, it's complementary, but if you show up after 8 AM, expect slim pickings. Fruit bowls -- on a tropical island, mind you -- were often empty, and when there was fruit, it was supermarket melon: cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, occasionally pineapple. Where was the mango, the papaya, the kiwi? Hot trays were routinely left empty, sometimes for 15 minutes or more before being refilled. The private beaches are probably the strongest selling point, uncrowded, with drinks service (which was mostly fine). The gym was clean, well-equipped, and in good shape. The resort itself is spread out over a large property with a golf course and tennis courts, which makes for pleasant walks. A few operational quirks worth noting: The resort is entirely cashless, but everywhere off-resort is cash-only, including unregulated cabs where drivers make up their own rates. Bring plenty of cash. There's a shuttle (golf carts or mini vans) to get around the hilly property. It was prompt maybe 80% of the time. A few instances where we had to call two or three times and wait 20+ minutes, so allow extra time if you have to be somewhere. The staff were mostly great -- shoutout to Brad K. and a few of the bartenders. Final take: if you're in St. Croix for a wedding or family event, you may end up here by default. But if you're choosing between this and other islands like Grenada, Turks and Caicos, or Aruba in a similar price range, this won't deliver the same value or experience. Private beaches and a good gym aren't enough to make up for mouse poop in the room and empty breakfast buffets. I get why some people leave five-star reviews here. It's probably the best St. Croix has to offer. But when you're paying premium prices, you're not just comparing it to "not being on vacation," you're comparing it to other tropical resorts, and on that scale, it's a miss.

Waening: Stay away from 2nd floor rooms facing the front at The Buccaneer, St. Croix! I checked into the main building and thought I'd be getting a relaxing stay... nope. Got woke up by loud golf carts, slamming car doors, and loud phone talks. Went to front desk to complain and got a major attitude. One staff member (tall guy with glasses) was super unhelpful and basically argued with me . If you want sleep, avoid 2nd floor front-facing rooms like the plague. Not worth it.

Book it. You won't regret it! This place is amazing and I will forever cherish memories with my family! Shoutout to kids camp Shaquita, wedding coordinator Carmen and Concierge Lea! You guys are incredible and made our stay unforgettable

Stayed at this resort for my mother in laws birthday. Here is the good and bad of our stay and experiences. THE GOOD Beaches are clean and nice. Pools are clean and water is warm. Rooms are spacious and bathrooms are huge. Continental breakfast was great. Landscaping is well kept. Dinner at The Terrace was good and portions were big. Food was cooked very well. THE BAD Mermaid restaurant was awful. Food was overcooked and unseasoned. This was for all four of our dishes. 20% gratuity is added to everything. Including if you order a single cocktail at the bar. I always tip, but let me choose the amount. The restaurants will close and no one will call you to tell you if you have reservations so you can change plans. The property is dated. Especially for what they charge. Limited beach swimming area due to reefs. Seating at pool is limited. This did not affect us because we were there during the off season but if you are here when it is busy you better get a chair early. Check in and out took forever. In a world where most hotels can get you checked in in less than 5 minutes and where you do not need to actually go to the front desk to check out, the Buccaneer is severely slacking in this area. The room air conditioner was loud. STAFF The staff I am rating separately and is the reason for my 3 stars. We came into contact with very few staff that were pleasant. Most of them had an attitude and could really benefit from some customer service training. When someone is rude to you it really puts a damper on your mood and that should never happen at a resort like this. They failed this category IMO.

Amazing hotel love the food, enjoyed myself in the beach I had a wonderful stay here. I love that they have the tennis courts and a private beach for their guest only I hung out on the beach late last night and had a good time I will be definitely coming back to this hotel in the future

More food options would be greatly appreciated. The property has wildlife roaming and a few deer onsite.

The Buccaneer energy surcharge PER DAY has gone up to $87.67 and added to your daily room charge and daily room tax.

Review Highlights - The Buccaneer Hotel

Mermaid beach was nice with plenty of activities but the snorkeling was mediocre, mostly grass beds with one small reef that required a long swim.

While some bugs are to be expected, there were bugs in the fridge, on light fixtures, and crawling around the floor. Most importantly, we found it very hard to get a good nights sleep due to all of the noise. The fire alarm went off two mornings in a row, multiple times per day. One was at 5:30 am. One was at 7:30am. Way too early for vacation! Staff said there was nothing they could do about it but made it sound like this does happen regularly due to a sensitive fire system and guests that smoke, kitchen cooking, etc. We also were in a hallway with a door and it was slamming open and shut all night with traffic. As far as the onsite restaurants, I would recommend the HH at the speakeasy Breakers Roar Tiki Bar (6-8). The coffee shop Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters was overpriced and only average. The Mexican restaurant El Leon had good drinks, and was ok for breakfast but they really had a hard time with food allergies/modifications. Good location on the boardwalk, we had to drive around to find street parking a couple times and construction closes the roads nearby frequently, but it's nice to walk. Expect many restaurants and shops nearby to be closed if it's a weekday, or no cruise ship around, etc.

Holger Danske Hotel - Nice little desk, complete with a refrigerator so you can have cold drinks in your room.

I stayed at this place because it was centrally located, right on the boardwalk. Check in was super easy, and the staff is very friendly. One nice feature is they have a locking gate to get to your hotel room, just a nice little added sense of extra security. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the room, very clean, very simple. Is this a five-star hotel? Absolutely not. This falls into the category of right in the middle. And by that I mean it was very clean, very well appointed, and had pretty much all the amenities I could want, except for a microwave. But it did have a refrigerator so I could keep any beverages. Nice and cool when I returned from a long day of sightseeing. The bathroom is clean and simple. My room had a shower, and everything worked perfectly. Clean, and while it was just a tiny bit small, the room worked out perfect. You have to remember, you're in the Virgin Islands. So as long as you have a clean place to wash up, change clothes, shower and sleep, you're golden. And this hotel checks all the boxes on that front. The beds were nice and soft the pillows as well, and was a perfect place to crash after a long day of sightseeing I would definitely make it a point to stay here again, if you are ever in St. Croix, this is a great, affordable, place to lay your head. Bottom line? This will be my go-to hotel when I come back to the Virgin Islands every time. You definitely need to check this place out.
