I was a loyal customer for years, spent good money here, and referred numerous people to the business. My situation was that I ordered fresh oysters, as I had a number of times before, but was instead given 100 frozen oysters that were already two weeks old (pickup date 5/23/26) without any prior communication or opportunity to decline the order. Btw I ordered 40 oysters. Somehow this was all my fault. When I questioned the situation, I was told I would no longer be served. The issue wasn't the product itself. It was the lack of communication, professionalism, and respect for a longtime customer. Based on my experience, I can no longer recommend this business and will be taking my business elsewhere. For the past 3 summers this has been my first stop after landing at TVC. We arrived on the 4th of July this year and was greeted by a friendly employee who gave us some free sample items to try, along with everything else we bought. Amazing food! Cottage bacon, homemade hotdogs, sliders, a dip, etc. We stocked up the cottage and grilled almost every day. I had never heard of "cottage bacon" before but dang was that good. My friends and I walked in to check out the selection of meats while we were waiting for a table at blue tractor. We had decided to buy some beef jerky, when the owner walked up to us and said "you guys look like nice people" and proceeded to give us some beef jerky dip, crackers, and candied bacon. I admit, that I'm writing this review after receiving free food, but for starters, the dip and the bacon were fantastic! The dip had a great flavor, with a perfect mix of umami and spice, and the candied bacon... was one of the most delicious meats I've had! It had just the right balance of sweetness, smokiness, and baconey goodness! When Yelp told me the jerky was great, I had to go! The guys that work the meat counter are freaking wonderful. They're hilarious and you can sample the jerky before you buy it, and they give you a nice chunk! They definitely don't skimp on samples and it's awesome. I tried to split my sample with my bf and the guy gave him a piece, saying there was no need to share! It was 16.99 for a pound of turkey jerky and worth it. We have quite a bit. Very nice meat selection in Traverse City. They also have a nice selection of pantry items and produce (get your Chicago Giardiniera). We tried the cherry sausages which were good, the dry aged NY Strips which were great, the cherry chicken salad was amazing (better than Hansens or Cherry Republic) and bacon also amazing. The dry aged steaks had no age statement and maybe could've been a little older / funkier and dryer (they were vacuum sealed which might have affected this). All in all, likely the best butcher in the area. read more

Mmm, lunch. Very easy to use salad bar, 5.99 or 8.99 containers. Pay per container size, not weight. Soups, hot stuffs. Deli counter and meat, naturally. Some vegetables and pantry staples, too. I saw plenty o 'pastas, sauces, a risotto, etc. Sweet treats by the register, how'd they know that I needed a lil bite of Ghirardelli chocolate to face the afternoon?? P.s. salad dressing pouches can be found at the bottom of the cold case immediately to the left of the butcher counter. I live in the U.P. but my wife and I were recently visiting for our son's football game near by. I've had a hard time finding a butcher shop with higher end meats since moving north so I took the opportunity while visiting to look for one and I'm very pleased that I did. This place is a gem. They have an excellent selection of quality meats and specialty items. I was like a kid in a candy store. So far, out of the items I purchased, I've eaten the Korean jerky which was great, the beef jerky dip which was awesome, and I just ate a ribeye. I can honestly say that the ribeye was the best steak I've eaten in years. I suspect the pork chops and house made bacon will be good as well. While I was there, I was either helped, or offered help by several different people including a guy who appeared to be the owner or manager. The customer service was as good as the steaks that just pleased my entire family. I'll be back the first chance I get and I'll order online if and when I can't wait that long. read more

The beef jerky dip is very good. The people at the store are awesome. We were going to a viewing at a funeral home nearby and realized that nobody had thought about having snacks in the kitchen during the viewing. I started making phone calls at the last minute and nobody could help on such short notice. Then I called Maxbauers and they were so helpful and friendly. They said give them 20 minutes. Stopped in to check this place out as we were eating at the Blue Tractor a few doors down. Gorgeous looking meats and top notch service. I commented on the bacon jerky and they handed me 2 pieces to try (they are not stupid) one maple and one spicy. Wowza! Bought a pound! Then got some homemade sausages: German brats, turkey breakfast sausage, and several turkey brats. This is the spot. This place is everything you would want in a local butcher shop/specialty grocery store. My family and I are visiting TC for the first time and I'm very happy we stoped in. Theses guys give the greatest samples in history. They let me try a variety of jerkeys (Delmonico is a must). To my great disbelief and appreciation the owner (Mark I think) sent me home with a beautiful dry aged steak and a half a pound of bacon FOR FREE! Every person I interacted with here from the guys behind the counter to the cashier was friendly and full of positive energy. I am officially addicted to their beef jerky. I do not even like jerky. I've always thought of jerky as kind of gross. A week earlier, I had declared that I was going vegetarian. And I am telling you, that I am now a Maxbaer Market beef jerky junkie. It's expensive, & you're going to tell yourself "I'll just get a small amount as a little treat." And then you are going to eat all of it in your car driving away from the market & deeply regret not buying more. It's so good. They also had some great, local hard ciders in their store. Top quality, great people. We live in Chicago & were sent to Maxbauer by old family friends (Becky & her Dad Jack). We met Mark & he couldn't have been nicer & more helpful. He introduced us to a few new kinds of jerky, which were absolutely amazing. I also picked up a couple of Ribeye's & probably the best I've ever had. The brat selection is top notch.
