While I agree the food is not exceptional (and it really needs to be to survive in this area), the friendly staff and decent wine and craft beer list help a lot. The fit out is the best part of this place. I'm a sucker for well designed cafés and restaurants (this is both), and was blown away by the cute design and use of space. It's very photogenic and will be great in summer, sitting on the front deck drinking Campari spritz or In winter tucked away out back with a glass of red wine. There is also a bluestone cellar with a large pool table hidden downstairs! Not many of these left in modern pubs around this area! All in all this place has a lot of room to improve but the foundation is there for a great addition to Collingwood.

We had one item that was like an arancini ball but it was crumbed mashed potato with a beautiful truffled mushroom ragu in the middle. Coffee (or in my case tea) orders are taken the moment you sit down. Plus water and menus are brought over in a jiffy. My issue really lies with the menu. Everything is $12.50+, with pretty much all the egg dishes are just shy of $20. Now, for a weekend brunch, I have no real problems with these prices. But during the week when you don't necessarily want all the bells and whistles and prefer some simpler, cheaper options (think eggs on toast with optional extras or a standard porridge for under $10), the choices are non-existent. I have tried the breakfast crumble (which was quite nice, but too sweet for my taste) and the wheat-free porridge (the only porridge option). I think the porridge was actually polenta based, which I wished they mentioned on the menu rather than calling it a "seed & grain" mixture (I was expecting something completely different to what arrived on the table). It was ok, but I wouldn't be ordering it again. I like my porridge kept pretty simple (even if it isn't oat based), and this was just a bit too weird for me, not just in terms of consistency but also flavours and toppings wise too. Oh well. I have no doubt I would feel differently about Mitte if I was here on a weekend and ordering one of the yummy sounding egg dishes, but alas, it's Monday and I just want something simple...if they added a few more simpler & cheaper options to the menu I have no doubt it would get an extra star.

Our waitress was lovely and brought our doggie friend a water bowl while my coffee was also quite good and served at a great temperature for Soy. Mitte is a cute cafe off the main areas and a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick or Smith St. Perfect to go to after a morning walk in the Park. We had our sandwiches to go and even though they didn't appear to give you a great quantity of ham, the salty smoky quality of it carried it's way through every bite of sandwich while the avocado kept it moist enough to comfortably eat. I like it and I reckon I'll be back again.

All of which were printed with a very stiff cover and harboured a glosses illustrated tint to them. Some of you reading this might recall such examples like Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys or Jack London's "Call of the Wild" the first fascination to me was the menus in Batches, as they took vintage. Retro styled books and pasted the menu inside them. Curiously, one might be compelled to even start reading them. But its all together a magnificent intrigue of it own and adds character too Batches. There is a sparkling celery tonic drink in the non-alcoholic category of the menu. And as my close friend had remarked its rather refreshing and not too sweet. She would recommend it! She recommends the dish she had also as just and perfect for anytime hunger. Poached eggs over Hash. My dish was the scrambled eggs with sourdough toast And side of spicy baked beans! I have to admit I looked at the other tips and reviews of this place and they were right about getting an egg plate if your not sure cause it was soo filling. And soo perfect for the appitite I did have. One thing that took the .5 away from them was the size of my iced coffee. I'd rather not get into too much detail, but a mouse wouldn't be satisfied with that either... (Sorry no picture of it cause it was that embarrassing) Although I must admit; Prior to receiving the drink at my table I thought it great the server asked if I wanted it over ice cream or just milk. Most places I've already been to here in Melbourne assume- ice cream unless you say otherwise. If it was taller and little larger then a water glass then I would have given them full 5stars. But always save room for the cupcakes!! My friend has said the coffees are a bit hit and miss, but they are advertising for a barista so it might be something that gets sorted before you know it. A great alternative to the always busy Miss marmalade next door!
