Oh, Just Eat. Where were we before you came along? The ability to physically see a menu without visiting a takeaway, the joy of clicking on that menu and deciding what to munch... And so it was that Just Eat led me to the Caribbean Takeaway, a restaurant that just like Ronseal, does exactly what it says on the tin.
I've loved this kind of cuisine ever since two visits to Cottons in London, so imagine my joy when I discovered a takeaway of the ilk just under two miles away. I was intrigued by a comment left on the Just Eat site, a negative criticism... Something along the lines of "could have been cooked in somebody's kitchen at home". And when I received my food, I knew exactly what they meant. But for me, this was a wonderfully positive thing. It was comforting, home-cooked soul food. Simple, rustic, and most importantly, authentic.
What made this whole experience so wonderful wasn't just the tasty food or the great value prices, but also the service I received. I had two phonecalls immediately, once to apologise and inform me that they'd run out of fried chicken and steamed fish, so I replaced those with jerk chicken and saltfish with ackee. The other was to let me know when the food would arrive. Around 40 minutes later, there were no issues, no phonecalls asking directions, no bewilderment. Nope, my buzzer went, and my food was right at the door. This is no mean feat in the average UK takeaway, I assure you!
The dumplings with curry sauce were divine, the steamed veg refreshing, plantains well cooked and not soggy, the ackee as much like creamy scrambled egg as they should be and the fish flavoursome. My companion assured me the jerk chicken was lovely and the two free portions of rice and peas topped it off nicely. For under £16, what more could you ask for? read more
