We took a gamble and entered and were pleasantly surprised to find the most unusual menu in one of the most surprising of places. We settled for the soy burger (minus cheese) with wedges. And it was good. The food was hot, fresh, and very good. Our hostess was very warm too. We were probably the only diners at around 3 pm, but the kitchen was open for us. We are more than used to paying around £80.00 for a nice meal in a good restraunt and often feel a bit let down by pub food. However, today, we entered The Royal Oak at 12.00 and were met by very helpful happy staff who, on request, offered us the menu. We both selected Cottage Pie with peas and carrots which only came to £10.00 for both meals. This ordinarily would lower our expectations dramatically, but how wrong can you be? The Cottage Pie was delightful, large portions and was of equal standard to that of bistros charging eight times as much. I would not hesitate to recommend The Royal Oak, what a lovely surprise. Quality and service are still available in the UK in the most unlikely places. Well done!

It's clean and well cared for, and we were made extremely welcome by the lovely owners. There's a regular bus service into/from town about every half hour (or every 15-20 minutes during the day, if I recall right) that stops right opposite the front door. The breakfasts are awesome - you get to choose your menu the night before (from simple continental to ful extra-large cooked English) for an all-inclusive price. I only wish I'd not had such a hangover then I'd have been able to do justice to mine!! I'd definately stay there again.

The hotel is a little old-fashioned, but pleasant enough in its chintzy kind of way. The staff are always friendly and breakfast is great. The rooms are fairly sized and good value for money. WHICH IS 3 MINUTES WALKING FROM THE BEACH. you wouldn't know it when you arrive, but you are basically right at the foot of the sandiest beach i have yet to find in the UK. the owners are really nice and the breakfast was good. the hotel is small so they know who you are and are friendly. i had a single room so it was a bit small, but definitely adequate. i would be back in a heart beat during another sunny weekend.

We parked the car in the hotel car park - ask the reception to open the barrier for you. Great room with a view of the sea and good bar with half price cocktails from 5 til 7. We had dinner in the restaurant which was really good and the staff were great. Breakfast was also good and again the service was excellent. This was the first hotel in Bournemouth opened in 1812 and is still providing a comfortable and welcoming experience. Definitely recommend.

Negative point was that the people in the above room seemed to pace up and down the room creaking their floor boards to the early hours. Not far from the BIC, was straightforward to locate
