Like the nearby Briton's Protection, it's one of Manchester's original drinking dens and one of the few places to escape modernisation. Outside is a mix of shocking pea and pastel green tiles whilst inside there's three different rooms with a distinctive 1970s feel. The walls are decorated with pub memorabilia and faded photos of celebrity musicians and actors whilst the jukebox is stacked with lots of Mancunian hits. There's also a pool table, dart board and bar stools encouraging conversation and friendly banter rather than getting legless or watching a widescreen TV. Prices are reasonable for the city centre and the staff are friendly. I'm more of a spirits girl than a beer swiller but for those that like a pint at the end of a long day, they have Deuchars, Tiger, Jennings Cumberland and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin ales on tap.

Due to its close proximity to business district Spinningfields, 6pm on Fridays usually sees it get crammed full of office workers up for a laugh over a few relaxing pints and as such is generally a good natured and inviting place be. Its al fresco drinking area is a really fantastic sun trap during the warmer months and the cosy and traditional pub decor inside means the Grapes is just as enjoyable a place to be as the dark evenings draw in.

The area has always lacked a good bar/pub in my opinion - the Oast House is aesthetically out of place and very expensive - so the Dockyard is a welcome addition. Great local breweries on tap, tasty reasonably priced food and a cool glass front makes this a new go-to place for me in Spinningfields. The only downside is its location, it's a bit out of the way of the hustle and bustle, but thinking again that might not be a bad thing.

They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly. An absolute must for real ale lovers, there is no brewery attached. Instead, they have up to eight pumps (a minimum of four) of both real ales and more mainstream beers like Fosters. Both these and drinks that I myself actually drink are very reasonably priced for a pub just on the outskirts of the Northern Quarter. If you're not familiar with the area just walk all the way down Oldham Street then cross over the main road- its right in front of you. It is very quiet during the day but that is what some people want after all. No, where the Crown and Kettle really could do with improvement is the food. I think it really lets itself down as it just isn't good pub food- maybe if they perked up the menu more people would straggle in during the day. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they don't want trade to be roaring at all hours - just a thought.
