this is a really cute spot to paint some pottery. they have a wide selection of things you can choose from to paint and they are pretty relaxed. they give a quick run down in the beginning and let you do your thing after. the price is a $10 fee for using the space + supplies and the price of the pottery item you selected. once you finish painting, you can pick up your piece 5 days after. it was very fun, but i did find it a bit expensive. however, i would recommend and return again. read more

While visiting town we were looking for fun activities to do with the family including a 2 year old. We made an appointment and came in for a fun night. This is not the first paint your own pottery we have been to and found this location excellent. Our reservations required a payment of $10 studio fee, which is reasonable and usual for paint places. First, they had a very large selection of items to paint. All sizes and shapes, something for everyone to do. Pricing for the pieces was very good, better than pricing I am used to at my own local place. They also had plenty of paint, brushes and other supplies. Second, they had several spaces in which to paint. We were led downstairs to a room of our own, very appreciated with a small child in tow! Very clean and organized. Finally, our pieces were available in just a few days. Usually these take a week, but after only 3 days our pieces were available and looked great. All staff that I had contact with were very friendly. I would recommend this place for date night or family outing, all ages would enjoy. read more

As a birthday present, my boyfriend brought me to The Clayroom to pick out a piece of pottery and paint it with him. Obviously, I did all the planning and research ... and he just paid for it. I didn't know that reservations are recommended so when we called the day before they were unable to get us in. So we made a reservation for the very next day at 12:30 PM. I thought this activity would take an hour, maybe an hour and a half max. My boyfriend and I ended up spending almost 3 hours painting our pottery. Granted, we each picked two of the largest pieces that you can paint. I chose a cookie jar shaped like a cupcake and he picked a large wine vase. We had an absolute blast painting our pottery and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I haven't picked up our pieces yet because they are ready after five days. Came here on a Wednesday afternoon. It's a smaller studio and it was somewhat busy but we sat immediately. Pay-by-the-piece + $10 studio fee. Just discovered on their website that fee drops to $5 on Monday nights? So see you then. Piece prices were ok (places like this are always somewhat expensive) but lots to choose from. Also pretty good paint selection but no puffy paint or speckled paint :( Glaze time is 5 days. Overall was a nice relaxing time and the young woman working was very polite even when I stayed longer than my friends to finish and she had to shuffle me around to accommodate people with reservations. Music could be better, but the sound of one radio in some distant location did make for a very cozy studio type feel. Overall good vibes I'll be back. I called in advance before driving to the shop during rush hour and was told the pieces were ready, only to arrive and have them not be ready. The employee then literally cried about it to her boss who then called me and tried to blame me for his unstable and incompetent worker who simply failed at her job that's all, nothing to cry about. On top of all this multiple pieces were broken while being handled by the employees. No apology was given and no cost was discounted. For these reason I write this 1 star review. A pizza party for $20 bucks a person (8 person minimum) covered $12 in pottery (I think we actually got credited $16), all studio fees (normally $8pp, but lowered to $6pp for groups of 4 or more), pizza, and drinks. Pizza - one large pizza is ordered for every 4 painters, which comes out to 2 slices per person; with choice of pepperoni, cheese, or veggie. Drinks - lemonade and water, one of each (which I feared would be insufficient for our party of 10) With a reservation placed in advance, they were able to set aside a table for us where we could sit together as we worked on our individual projects. After we each picked our ceramic, a short pointer of the paints and hair dryer was provided. Three layers, blowing them dry between, to make for a more solid base color. The pencil markings burn off, so don't hesitate to draw your design on before painting it on. As it takes 5 days for the pieces to be fired in the kiln to give it the nice shiny dishwasher/microwave safe coating, come here only if it is convenient enough for you to return to Coolidge Corner to pick up your piece later. I had a Groupon for the Clayroom and checked their website to see that it was encouraged to make a reservations, so I did that! I went with friends on December 2014. We came in at 4:30 and was finished by 7 (spent 2.5 hours there). We (a group of 4) came in and was escorted to a table. It was extremely cold outside that day, so it was still pretty chilly inside as well, but the owner of the shop said it would get warmer soon as he was baking the finished pieces of potteries. He told us to choose what we wanted to paint first and then he would give us instructions since it was our first time there. Then we waited for around 10 to 15 minutes for the owner to give us instructions-not going to complain since the place was packed. The service was good. No one rushed us to hurry up even though it was pretty crowded. The workers were really talkative with one another. The only problem we experienced was not really knowing the exact amount for our piece of pottery. Yes, the Clayroom has labels on the racks, but they did not correspond to the pottery pieces when we came; they were probably moved around before and fixed after we picked our pieces. So at the end when we were calculating the total amount, some pieces we picked were supposedly more expensive than what we saw with the mismatched labels. To be sure, make sure to ask the workers there if the labels are not in the right place. The Clayroom is a great place to chill and to be creative. I would recommend. read more

This place is pretty special. All clayrooms are cool. Select your piece, select your colors, paint! What sets this location apart is the owner. Every time I have been to this location, he has been personally welcoming painters, helping them get going, and running this studio very effectively. You can tell that he loves what he is doing. I actually forgot my wallet on this last trip. He told me not to worry about it, I can pay him later. Wow! such trust in his customers! And he said it with a very friendly tone. I was buying a take home kit for my 7 year old. He could have easily just taken back the ceramic ice cream cone in my shopping bag, but that would have been very upsetting for my daughter. She loves this place. I love that you can paint dishes that you can actually use, and the variety of colors and pieces is fantastic. This place isn't super fancy but it is a great experience. We booked a reservation for a private session of wheelthrowing on Sunday afternoon. It was a bit pricier than expected - everything included it cost $100 for a 2 hour session for 2 people with 1 instructor. We each got to create 3 pieces on the wheel after a 30 minute discussion of how to use the wheel. My boyfriend and I had a great time and are excited to see how our pieces come out after they are fired in the kiln. The owner/operator of the business said we could painting our pieces for free, which is nice! We will definitely be coming back to paint our own pottery and maybe some of the premade pottery, too! Only complaint is hat the space is somewhat cramped and tight where the wheels are and it's very hard to walk around. read more

LOVED my experience at the Clayroom. I hadn't been back to one of these ceramic painting places since I was a kid but dang it made me miss them! It's a little hectic when you get inside but that's just a part of its charm. You will soon be greeted by one of the friendly workers (Douglas and Brett graciously helped us and they were so helpful!) on how it works from picking your ceramic to how to choose colors and paint your creation. Such a fun rainy day activity! Make sure to make a reservation if you are coming in on a weekend because this place was full! Your ceramics will be done the following Thursday and they hold them for around 2 months after which is really nice! The only thing I will say is that the toilet is a little "janky". The back portion doesn't have a top and you have to pull a string to flush it. Not sure if this is temporary or not but it should be fixed. read more

Single mom on Mother's Day here. My kids are too young to do anything on their own for Mother's Day (5 and 8) so I planned a special day to celebrate together which included reservations at The Clayroom so they could paint some pieces. It seemed like the perfect way to spend the day together doing something creative, and they could say that they gave me gifts. We drove into the city, found street parking, and walked to The Clayroom only to be turned away-- they had a bridal shower and the party wanted the entire store to themselves. They took up only one table in the store yet apparently they couldn't honor my reservation. And when they took my reservation over the phone, they didn't take my number so they couldn't call me to inform me they'd have to cancel it. My number isn't blocked but I guess they couldn't figure out which one was me. They gave me three generous discount cards for my trouble, but obviously we won't be coming back. I'll give them away to friends though. Who has a bridal shower on Mother's Day?!? Bridezilla, anyone?? read more

I enjoyed myself, at least once the kids were gone. I went and there were three...shall we say VOCAL young women partaying it up with the hair driers when I got there. It was admittedly distracting but they weren't the little monsters detailed in previous reviews. Besides, if you're going to go to a clay painting room I think it's fair to expect children. Once they were gone it was just me and the paint. Me and the paint get along swell. The dude at the front was playing solitaire on his computer. I think some other people have found that inattentive. I found it wonderful. Just leave me in my corner so I can make my own little puddly mess all by myself. This was perfect. Some other dude walked in, hunched over his tiny bowl and painted meticulous little dinosaurs and skulls on it. So he kept to himself, too. Three people in the room, no one speaking. It was nice. Highly zen. Then when it came time to pay it was the cost of the item and a one day $8 flat fee for paint time, which in comparison to clay painting experiences past was ridiculously affordable, especially for someone who devises time consuming projects. I'm very happy with the way my little ceramic watering can turned out - it's cute, and it's shiny. Their stencil selection is excellent. Their selection of colors is fair. Pick your item to paint and then get your paint tray in the back! When you're done, nothing else to do, but pay. Leave your pottery on the table and they do the cleanup! Come back in 5 days! Fun time with my 2 year old! I went on a Wednesday around 4 and it was kiddy central so be mindful when making ressys. They have adults only Wednesdays after 6. bring a smock/shirt to put over your child's clothing as they don't provide aprons. Love the wide range of items you can paint here. I have painted everything from ice cream bowls to plates, all which I use in my home. Doug the owner is incredibly helpful and loves to give pointers. He always remembers return customers. I recommend making a reservation since it it small. If you get hungry while painting I recommend going on Tuesdays when Doug orders pizza or Wednesdays when they serve wine, cheese, and crackers. read more

After YEARS of walking/driving/T-ing past the Clayroom and wanting to go, I finally went with some friends, thanks to a Groupon. It is a small place (with no AC, which was very much needed on a 90+ degree day) and there was a kids' birthday party, so it was loud. But the 4 of us had 2 tables and plenty of room to work (with the occasional kid running around our feet). Once the kids left, it was nice & quiet and we could work in peace. The Groupon allowed us each 1 piece up to $18 (it was annoying that you can't do 1 piece for $10 and 1 for $8, but oh well). It took us a long time to decide what we wanted, because there are a lot of great options. The 2 people working were very helpful in fixing mistakes and giving tips. We were there right up until 10pm and I apologized to the girl and she was totally fine with it. Very laid back. I'm excited to pick up my piece in a few days. It's just too bad I'm not more artistic! I'll just have to go back for more practice! read more

The owner was (seemingly proudly) unmasked and within seconds of meeting invaded my personal space. The place was quite crowded, and though most patrons seemed to be wearing masks, neither the owner nor (those who appeared to be) the workers were wearing masks. I was appalled to learn that the owner himself was responsible for this behavior, and to avoid confrontation and possibly contracting covid (mind you as the holidays approach and relatives and friends of mine are susceptible to severe disease and death), decided just to leave. We ended up going to a neighboring establishment that was adhering to masking to play board games instead (highly recommend Knight Moves). read more

I used to be a fan but the guy who works there doesn't wear a mask despite the fact that it's packed with kid birthday parties all the time and he's shouting directions and making jokes with everyone. Really disrespectful to the community to not mask up when your clientele is mainly unvaccinated kids, in a spot that is crowded and has no open windows. read more

This has been one of my favorite places to relax with a friend or just to get something and paint by myself. I really like how this place is the adult version of plaster fun time, but when you finish its something you can actually use. There arent any of those weird awkward streaks. The help here is amazing when it comes to color advice as well as just helping you with basic things. I really like coming here because they greet you in a friendly manner and they always make conversation even when your just waiting for the blowdryer to finish your coats. The only negative thing is that sometimes when you come pick up after the baking off your clay items, there maybe smudges and a little cracking from who knows what. So just be careful when you are painting. read more

I came here for a group activity and had a great time. The owner was very friendly/helpful. They have a lot of options to choose from - tableware, vases, piggybanks, etc.. He gave us a quick intro and showed us where everything is, then walked around giving us pointers as we painted our pottery. The studio is very clean and well-organized, stencils, blowdrying stations. Plus an adorable pet dog! The only suggestion I would have is to display sample "done" pieces of the pottery around the store. For ppl who are creatively-challenged like me, it is helpful to see what other people painted. Would recommend this as a fun date idea or family event, but Ill be honest they don't offer the best service. Make sure to take a photo after you've gone because if you forget what you painted (it takes a week) they won't give you your pottery even though you pay beforehand. They say it's not your responsibility, but it partially is when you're paying for it. I'm sure we went on an "off" night, but I was disappointed with the service at The Clayroom. Once my friends and I got there (5:30 reservation) we were promptly seated, picked our objects, and one of the workers showed us the ropes. They have a variety of items to choose from, from piggy banks to vases. For the $8 studio fee (that's the fee for a party of 4 or more), we had access to mostly everything in the studio. Once we collected all our supplies, we sat down and began to paint. The Clayroom is also byob so having an adult beverage while painting is definitely a fun experience. Unfortunately, our time at the studio was cut short because they had to get everyone out due to a private party at 7. Because it is on the smaller side, I can see why they have to clear the space to accommodate private parties. The issue was that they did not inform my table of this, nor did they make it clear while making the reservation over the phone that we would have to leave by 7. Instead, one of the male workers came over and started asking us if we wanted to save our items and come back at another time to finish them. We were confused and when we asked why, his answer was extremely dismissive and unapologetic. Because we thought we had several hours to finish painting, my friends and I were taking our time. Needless to say we didn't finish painting and I don't see myself going back there to finish my piece..or ever, mainly because of the brash way the male worker handled the situation. Unfortunately, that 30 second exchange with him made a lasting impression on us. If he had approached the situation differently, this would have been one of the many great reviews of this place. With all that said, The Clayroom was enjoyable for the short time we were there. My recommendation would be to double check with them how much time you would have at the studio while making your reservation. read more
