I saw something on Instagram from here that took my fancy, and wouldn't you know it, when we sat down to order, I couldn't find the picture again so didn't even order that (I know; screenshot it next time). Instead, I ordered the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon on a potato rosti, pickled red cabbage and poached eggs and Harissa hollandaise. It really was good. MAYBE if I were to be fussy, I'd say the potato rosti was just a fraction over done, but that's splitting hairs. The staff were friendly, the food came out fast, and it was really good. They do sell little cakes and muffins etc to either eat in or take out. I must say, not all looked appealing, but there was a great variety. Parking could be an issue at busy times. The council seem to think that by taking away parks, it "beautifies" the street. Uh, not so much. But if you go for breakfast early enough, it's a good spot. I highly recommend eating here. The breakfast is all day and there looks like a good lunch menu as well. Perhaps that's what I'll go for next time!

The decor is warm and inviting with lots of outdoor seating. The service is fantastic with staff being warm and chatty and very good at good service, making sure you feel like royalty. There is a community here of regulars and the staff all know them well. Inside there are pillows along two wall-seating areas so you can read a good book or just have a great place to sit with a friend over breakfast or lunch. I've had quite a few meals here and my all time favourites are the french toast and the chicken caesar salad. The french toast is done just as it should be, not soggy, but well done and comes with lightly cooked banana halves and crispy, crunchy bacon. The flavours all go so well together. The chicken caesar was perfect with all the components...crunchy homemade crouton slices, poached egg, crunchy bacon and a light dressing that was just right, not too oily and full of flavour. And of course I have to comment on the coffee.....excellent of course!!!! You know I wouldn't come back unless it was LOL It's one of the few places I can "not" order a "strong" latte and it comes out strong (as in not milky and full-flavoured coffee). Highly recommend this place and, it's owned by the same people as Cocos Lounge in Glen Waverley that I rave on about. Well, one morning I decided that it was a perfect time to come here for some breakfast, and as it turns out this seems to be a regular occurrence for a lot of people, due to the fact that it was pretty packed. They very obligingly turned it into a roast beef and salad sandwich. I'm not really a sandwich kinda gal but it was delicious. I can also recommend their pies and spinach pastry thingies. Last but certainly not least they have the most delicious potatoes cakes & dim sims. At $1 each that excellent value for consistent quality. Yes that's right, I've indulged more than once. I haven't tried any of them yet but the home made looking cakes are listed as gluten free. It's very closely located to RMITs Carlton campus so attracts students but also quite a number of local business people. You can eat in or sit at the tables outside. Staff are always smiling and friendly. All in all a local gem.

On the Victoria St side of Bridge Road, it's a smallish cafe with a lovely but simple fit out. Staff are super friendly, even if you are just in for a takeaway coffee. They use Industry Beans and their brews are pretty good! I've only been once for food and had the beans fish and it was delish with just the right amount of spice and chilli. The husband also enjoying his pancakes that came with figs, maple and walnuts - yum! Prices are on the pricier side of cafe fare, but if it's good quality, I think it's justifiable. The salads and sandwiches and sweets in the cabinet look very tempting also. I'll be back to try more!

Service was friendly but a bit aloof - the waiter couldn't remember who ordered what dish, and one of the orders were taken incorrectly. The coffee was good, chai latte average. I got the smashed avocado with harissa which was a very generous amount of the avo, slightly disproportionate to the amount of toast, though it allowed me to share some with my friend who didn't receive her avocado on the side. Flavour profile slightly off, needs a bit of acidity to balance the avo mix. The mushroom dish with the runny eggy hole brioche looked lovely, as did the homemade baked beans. The special of the day Nutella hot cake with cookie dough and ice cream (my teeth ached from reading the menu!) was shared between 5 of us - which ended up being the right amount. One reason for this is that I'm a little bit sad about the demise of Land of Siam, the Thai restaurant that used to be at this location, because it was a staple in my lazy Friday nights when all I want to do after work is collapse on my couch with some pad thai and a bottle of red. But then Derby Thai moved in down the road, so that helped the Thai issue (even though I really liked the Land of Siam in particular). The next reason for procrastinating about Hide & Cheek was their choice of font in their signage. No, really. Maybe I hang out with too many graphic designers or something, but this is a really naff font choice. Font matters because this made me think this was going to be a really naff place. While I would still love to give their signage and their menu layout/design a complete overhaul, this is actually a nice little local cafe. Inside it is quite light yet warm and cosy. There are some good choices on the menu. I had the Mermaid, which is an egg white ommelette with honey vodka cured salmon, spinach, toast and hollandaise on the side (my favourite little touch, as you can make it as healthy or unhealthy as you like). Next time I happen to wander down I intend to try the Speedy Gonzales, which was baked beans but with the genius touch of haloumi, which makes every breakfast a winner. The coffee was good, but I prefer mine a little hotter. They do, however, use Bonsoy, which is a big mark in their favour. There's also some delicious looking bakery goods and a few specials. On the day I was there it was an appetising looking, but oddly unseasonal burrata and tomato on toast. They're still getting their sea legs when it comes to the coffee: On our visit it tasted burnt and bitter. Could have been because they were slammed, but when the feature of your teeny cafe is a gleaming coffee machine and you have "espresso" in your name, I expect better. There is ample street parking and a park with a playground within minutes away.  My friend had arrived a few minutes earlier and put down our names on the waiting list. She was told it would be a 25 minutes wait. So, in the mean time, we got coffees. She got herself a soy flat white, while I was refused a skinny cacao mocha as they do not serve skim milk. When my friend asked why, they said it was because skim milk is full cream milk with the fat removed and added sugar. Though I beg to differ, I had to suffice with the full cream extra hot cacao mocha. Their homemade cacao is bitter and hence my drink was quite bitter but I could barely taste the coffee as the cacao was so overpowering. Perhaps, I should have ordered a double shot cacao mocha.  We got seating within the 25 minutes and were offered seats in the corner. While I had a comfy couch to sit on, my friend appeared to be sitting on what looked like a bed. She had the waitress climbing up behind her to serve drinks and food. As this looked quite awkward, we were then moved to shared seating on a long table near the kitchen. Here I noticed that the cafe has outdoor seating which I would have much preferred as well as swings that you can sit on. The swings look pretty cool but I prefer stable seating.  My friend was hangry and ordered the nutrition bomb which is 23 bucks and has eggs, alfalfa sprouts, pumpkin/sweet potato and other goodness. I found the menu slightly disappointing as I love eggs and most of the dishes suggested that you add on an egg ($5 for an egg - umm I buy a dozen for around $3), but then I guess you go to other cafes for eggs or eat them at home.  I got the smiling avocado - a dish with two slices of bread (their sprouted bread is sensational), lots of cherry tomatoes, crumbed feta, smashed pea and mint puree, smashed avocado beetroot relish, and chopped chilli. The portion sizes are huge so I do not recommend you order any of their large sides to share unless you are very very hungry. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and enjoyed the slight sweet flavour that was perhaps due to the beetroot relish. I could have done with more chilli but feared asking for added chilli as that is an extra 2 bucks. Service is quick and staff friendly. They have a minimum 20 eftpos limit (seriously!) but then it's easy to exceed the $20 limit where almost everything is an add-on (eggs, avocado, chilli, sweet potato, pumpkin, and the list goes on).  I believe their menu is best catered for people who like to mix and match items to produce their own brunch meals. Whereas for me, I prefer pre-designed brunch items that are wholesome and affordable.
