It was a gi class, though a few students were still waiting on their gis, which was totally understandable given the timing. The environment was very beginner-friendly, but even as a black belt I found a lot of value in the instruction. The instructor clearly knows his stuff and does an excellent job teaching fundamentals with meaningful details. His style has a noticeable catch-wrestling influence, which gave the techniques a unique and practical feel that I really appreciated. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students--he kept a watchful eye on everyone, emphasized safety, and offered solid tips throughout class. What really stood out to me was the vibe of the gym. It has an old-school feel, almost like a classic boxing gym. Not one of those high-end, ultra-modern white gyms--but honestly, that's exactly what I like. It felt cozy, laid back, and authentic, like a place where real practitioners want to train. The mats were clean and in good condition, which obviously matters. Everyone there was welcoming and warm, and the class structure was solid: traditional warmups, focused drilling, and quality instruction. I can easily see this school growing as more people discover it. If you're looking for a laid-back, old-school jiu-jitsu environment with thoughtful instruction, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Let's get some background on the person leaving this review before we get too deep into it. I am a…read more38 year old average dad of two kids. I never took martial arts when I was a child. I have never been a collegiate athlete, and I only played on the high school soccer team when they were critically low on warm bodies. I guess what I am trying to say is this is not a Jackie Chan or Jean Claude van Damme leaving this review, but more like a Ted Lasso. I started at Tiger Rock in January of 2023 because parents of kids enrolled can train for free during January, and I was getting bored riding a bike going nowhere. When I arrived at my first adult class, I was very nervous, but was surprisingly welcomed with open arms. Having been in a total of zero fights in my life, I knew the learning curve was going to be a steep one. Not to mention I have the flexibility of a giant Sequoia tree. The morning after my first class, my wife had to bring Motrin to me in bed, because moving was nearly impossible. Fast forward about 15 months, and several Sam's Club bottles of Motrin later, and I look for every opportunity to go to train with Mr. Jeremy Rose at Tiger Rock Hattiesburg. Am I close to representing Team USA in taekwondo for the Olympics? Not in a million years. Are my legs registered as deadly weapons? Absolutely not. Can I kick a 6'5 person in the head without standing on a ladder? No way. But do I feel more comfortable defending myself and my family from immediate harm? Yes. Do I have more flexibility now than I have had in 20 years? 100%. Can I kick my 4 feet tall son in the head when we spar at home? As long as I have stretched properly beforehand and I have given the Motrin 20-30 minutes to work, without a doubt I can. If you are still reading this review, you are genuinely interested in the idea of trying out Tiger Rock. So do it. There is a great chance that you will be pretty bad at it initially. And that's ok. In order to be great at something, you must first be willing to be bad at it for a while. Heck, maybe one day you will kick me in the head, and we will both smile at that simple victory in this journey we call life.
