I had toured several schools when searching for a nursery school for my oldest child and none of them compared to The Corner School. I loved how small and nurturing the environment was and how the teachers and the Director were so compassionate and caring. You can tell they genuinely care about the children. My daughter has been attending the corner school since September for pre-k and it has been nothing but a wonderful experience. She absolutely adores her teachers, Mrs Loria and Mrs Andrea, both of whom are caring, nurturing and excellent with kids. It is a small school which is nice as it seems like the staff knows all the parents and children, showing that they are very caring and involved, giving off a "family" vibe. My grandson is enrolled in the Pre-K program at the Corner School this year. He was in the nursery school last year, and my granddaughter who was in Pre-K last year, now attends Kindergarten in a local school. I am a retired Principal from the NYCDOE, so when I say that 5 stars is the rating for this school, you can believe me. Not only did my granddaughter flourish in Pre-K but she clearly was prepared for Kindergarten. My grandson learned to be a member of a class and learned how to be a friend. The teachers are not only kind, but knowledgeable in dealing with our youngest and most treasured children. If I were still in the position, I would not give a second thought in hiring the teachers for my own school. Their kindness shone bright and both children could not wait to go to school every day. This is also true this year. They were both prepared. Everyone working at the school including paraprofessionals, school aides, and administration are professional and kind. It's been a fantastic experience sending our daughter to the Corner School for PreK. All the teachers and staff are very caring and friendly and we feel like we're part of a family. Our daughter has developed tremendously thanks to Mrs. Loria and Mrs. Andrea who go above and beyond their job to nurture and enrich our daughter on many levels. It's absolutely amazing watching her grow artistically, mentally, and socially. We're extremely fortunate and grateful sending our daughter here and could not have asked for anything more. My twin girls have been attending this school for the past 2 years. It has been such a wonderful experience. All the teachers and staff in this school provide a caring, nurturing environment that has made this whole school experience a great one for us. My girls leave for school happy everyday and come home happy and cant wait to tell me all they have learned. There has been nothing but positive, socially and academically. My 4.5 year old is currently attending the corner school. After receiving the letter informing me that she is qualified to enter a gifted program for the 2015-2016 school year, I felt compelled to write this review. I love this little tiny school. The attention that my daughter has gotten from her teachers has been incredible. Mrs Loria and Mrs Koenig are so gentle and nurturing with the children that they've set the standard for what we are looking for moving forward. My husband and I both have mentioned how we wish they at least went on to 3rd grade! I cannot rave enough about this place. My favorite quality is the way that they have made very clear to us how they implement the common core into their everyday teaching. I truly am so happy that this school has provided my family with a wonderful first school experience. My son is currently enrolled in the nursery program at The Corner School. He absolutely loves it!! He also attended camp there last July. The teachers and staff are amazing! They always keep my husband and I informed of our sons progress and are very attentive to his needs and safety. They have many family oriented events throughout the year. Our son is always bringing home projects that correspond to what he is currently being taught. He adores his teacher, Mrs Levy and the schools director, Mrs Nack. My daughter has been at this school for two years with the daycare program. In September, she will be entering their Pre-K class. I absolutely love this school. From the very beginning, they helped make the transition from being at home with grandparents to being around other kids, an almost seamless one. I like that it is a small school and the teachers really know the students unlike other schools who have substitute teachers constantly floating in and out of the room. They have created such a warm and loving environment that has made my daughter feel safe and part of a community. She's grown tremendously over the past two years, emotionally, socially and intellectually. The entire staff is helpful and nurturing; they've put up with my tons of questions and have always accommodate our schedule. read more

Our family did not adapt to the Pre-K program at the Corner School and we ended up taking our child out of the program after less than 4 months. We transferred our child out of the Corner School and enrolled her in a nearby Dept. of Education program located within a K-5 school. Until we switched to the new school, we did not know how unappealing the Corner School has been. The instruction at the new school is much more rigorous and every day on the car ride home, our child asks follow up questions based on the learning that took place in the class at her new school that day. The differences between the Parent Teacher conferences was shocking. At the new school, we were presented with a portfolio of various art work by our child. The amount of student created work in her portfolio, which was used to identify our daughter's needs, was astounding. The teacher at the new school was able to articulate areas that our daughter needed support in and used examples from her work to clearly show evidence of the need. The PTC at the Corner School, however, was not nearly as resourceful. We also did not agree with the policies and rules the Corner School has put in place, as they violate city, state and federal education law. Since the school is collecting taxpayer money for the pre-k program, they are legally mandated to City, state and Federal laws and guidelines. The program director has been known to manufacture information and blame it on these laws and guidelines, when in fact it is the school's policy and she refuses to be open and honest. When questioned about anything related to the rules, she has the tendency to blame things on "Dept. Of Heath, Dept. Of ED, HIPPA, Ferpa or the "CITY", without being able to provide concrete documentation issued by such authorities. At one point, the Corner School administration hired a staff member for two years, who was not certified by the NY state. When parents found out and approached the Director to discuss the issue, she was dismissive and closed off to the parents' concerns. The director refused to remove the employee, which violated state law and had an adverse effect on the student because they were being supported by a un-licensed pedagogue, who did not have the state required certification to work with children. It is also noteworthy to say that, year after year, the administration relies upon the new group of parents, who usually do not know of their usual school practices, in order to receive favorable votes at the board meetings. We did like a few of the staff members, who actually worked very hard with the students and were well aware of each student's development. Unfortunately, such efforts were only evident on the nursery side during our time there. The biggest change we see in my child at the new school is the quality of teaching, At the Corner School, I would ask how her day went and the responses were minimal. Now she gets in the car and asks follow up questions about the lessons from school that day. Quality teacher instruction matters, and based on my years of experience, the instruction at the Corner School does not meet the basic standards and is more like a nursery school. Taking our daughter out of the Corner School was the best decision we have made although it may seem as if it does not matter much at this age. In our opinion, their Pre-K program was a continuation of the nursery program. Take the time to visit other Pre-K programs and give yourself a chance to learn of the differences between different schools. In the end, the choice is yours but take the time to visit other Pre-K programs so that you know you are making an informed decision for your child. read more

I toured 8 schools in Forest Hills and Bayside before deciding on The Corner School and it is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love that it is a small school and that everyone is so involved. The teachers are truly gems. They are so patient with the children and so interested in what they have to say. Sometimes at pick up the teachers would tell me funny things that my daughter did or said that day. This is my second year being part of the corner school community. My oldest was in PreK last year and my youngest was in the nursery . This year my youngest is now in the PreK and my oldest in kindergarten . My oldest has been able to move on to a big school and been able to adapt with great success I believe having been able to be at corner school gave her the independence and self confidence to do so. My youngest daughter who is currently in corner school now in prek refuses to miss a day of school she loves her teachers and is always excited to see her friends and do classwork! I highly recommend corner school it's a very nurturing homey environment perfect for the transition to big kids school. Teachers and staff are very compassionate and caring and go beyond out of their way for their students. I decided to participate on the School board and I think it's great because it's a non profit so our opinions as parents do matter! And everyone's main interest and priority are the kids. =) read more

Currently, my daughter attends The Corner School. They have a strong leadership team, very collaboratively, organized, responsible and with a sense of community. The teachers are coordinated to offer your child engaging every day activities, extra attention, support, academic growth increment and progress. They reinforce the concepts presented during class in an effective and fun way with quality education to encourage your child to learn and retain the information, demonstrate skills, and be independent with appropriate social interaction. Warm, nurturing, caring, fun and educational. These are the words that come to mind when I think of The Corner school. It is a wonderful environment for young children. The staff treats every child and family like a part of their own family. Most of the staff has been here for years and it is easy to see why. They love what they do and it is evident in the way they nurture the small minds in their care. My daughter attended this nursery from age 2.5 until she was almost 5 yrs old. She attended full time with extended hours and went to their summer camp as well. She adored her school and her teachers. She never wanted to leave. She cried when she became too old to continue going. As a working mother, I was relieved and thankful that I had found such a wonderful place for my daughter. The children learn through play, art and music. There is no tv or computer so that the children can do what they do best. Be children. They play, laugh, sing, draw and let their creativity run wild. My daughter benefitted so much from this school that she was accepted into the NYC gifted and talented program for public schools the following year. This is a school where your child will thrive and will look back upon it fondly in the years to come. read more

My child has been attending The Corner School since September and it has been nothing but a wonderful experience for both him and I. From our first visit we were met with nothing but warmth from the teachers and staff. The building is so cozy and feels like the perfect size for pre-school and pre-k children. His classroom is full of creative learning stations where he can explore and learn in a safe, nurturing environment. The fact that most of the teachers have been there several years or more is very comforting and I find the traditional method of teaching very refreshing! Since my son has started to attend I see a wonderful growth in his imagination, sharing skills and basic fundamentals. He loves the outdoor area and the time he spent in the garden with his teachers and classmates inspired him to ask for his own garden in our yard at home. I looked at several other schools but none gave me the feeling of a "family community" which is exactly what I was looking for. I love that parents are encouraged to come in and share a story, snack, music, craft, etc. with the children. I'm thankful we found this wonderful school early so he can grow and flourish here for the next 2 years! read more
