We hired Mr. Hanifin to deal with a violent squatter/hold-over in my home. He was happy to take…read moreseveral thousand dollars from us to prepare basic eviction paperwork, and to represent us in 1 brief court appearance (which he has another lawyer sub in for him with no explanation). During this time period, he was professional and respectful. He did misspell the squatter's name on court paperwork. Unfortunately, once the specific tasks that he could charge us for were behind us, he became a very different person. In the weeks between the court appearance and the actual eviction, he unraveled. He gave us erroneous advice on the postings I needed to make to the illegally occupied room (telling us we had significantly more time than we actually did). He messaged me to schedule the eviction WAY before I actually could, and acted confused but also completely uninterested in helping to figure out what I needed to do next to schedule the eviction with the Sherrif. The proverbial straw that broke this camel's back (and has led to this review), was when he dismissed the trauma I had been going through related to this matter with a self-righteous and dishonest email, describing having a violent squatter threatening to kill me as "a totally normal case" or something to that affect. This grotesque, arrogant message had a number of other inexplicably dismissive and insulting statements and insinuations that I won't detail in this post. In retrospect, it is painfully obviously that once he got all the money he could out of us, he was no longer interested in helping us in any way, even though the matter was far from resolved and we still desperately needed legal advice (and he was still our lawyer). Once he couldn't charge us for it (no more paperwork, court appearances), he became self-righteous and mean-spirited, but also demonstrated a basic lack of understanding as to the eviction process in Montgomery County and how to courts process and post information.

But after 3 1/2 years of me feeding this case 10's of thousands and it creeping along, I complained. He was also helping me in another case, and I was not happy with him at either. I remember Shawn complaining to the judge that I was breaking attorney-client privilege with some of my rhetoric, and I thought, oh boy,y I'm in trouble, but the judge fired back at him, "It's his privilege," meaning he (Shawn) can't complain. Anyway, he dropped me in the DC federal case and said I didn't have the money to go on, had health issues, and staff issues. I was not happy with what I felt were mistakes on his end, so I asked Who would you recommend. I want to go with his recommendation because had I lost I didn't want Shawn saying he had dome a great job, but who I chose to go with after was the guy that screwed it up. Well, that guy charged MORE THAN TWICE as much as Shawn per hour, and didn't even have support staff that charged less for the mundane work. So obviously Shawn realized that money was not the real reason for dropping me, especially since I've been feeding this new guy for over a year, part of which was to fix things he says Shawn should not have done. So, can I recommend Shawn Bartley? in a word, "No", is he a nice guy? "Yes" But that's not why you hire an attorney. Perhaps later I will expand this review. Perhaps I'll also file with the "Office of Disciplinary Counsel" time will tell.

Brown and Barron couldn't even establish a correct timeline of events. They asked us (at the end) if we would help them with an out of court lawsuit settlement so they could recover $14,000 in their expenses. They were more concerned with that than our case. I wouldn't wish our experience on anyone! Update: As a previous Accountant, I know what was said to me regarding recovering defense expenses, so there's absolutely no confusion there. We can agree to disagree; however, ultimately we believe there were far too many delays and issues with representation. Although promised to be updated monthly, we had to constantly email about updates when not informed. In additon, your reply states it's a nursing home negligence case. There were 2 physical rehabs (not nursing homes), as well as a hospital negligence case -- hence this is why we are deeply disappointed with representation. Somehow they took a HORRIBLE situation and made it even worse!

During the consultation I was given the appearance that the firm was a professional firm that was willing to assist with our needs. After being quoted a price and required documentation I made the decision to use this firm and what a mistake. My first appointment I was left standing at the door waiting so the assistant ( his wife) could put her child in the bus. I am always contacted at the last min and asked to produce documents within a moments notice so that the can file them before the court closes at 5pm. When reading over documents I have found errors that needed to be corrected and resubmitted. They are constantly missing deadlines to file motions on my behalf even though they were also notified. I have to constantly call and complaint or demand results before I EVER get a response or follow up phone call from Mr. Morris himself. Nor am I ever properly updated on my case. I was even told "well you are not our only client" but when I pay my money I should feel like I am. After my experience with this case and once complete, I will never be a returning client! I would not even refer anyone to this law office. I am very disappointed in the service I have received from this firm.
