I have been coming here again and again for many years - it has consistently been a 5 star restaurant, and have always maintained their high standards. Yes, you really need to book in advance - it is always packed full, so not good for walk-ins. It has the most amazing ambience, simple yet stylish decor, a gorgeous outdoor area when weather permits, and the most stunning view of the vineyards. Food is always amazing - not cheap, but you leave feeling like every dollar was very well spent! Their specialities are scallops served in a variety of ways, and their Lobster Medallion with Blue Swimmer Crab & Prawn Ravioli & Lobster Bisque is always on their entree menu (for $30 - but it is amazing!). The last time I came here, I had the Pork Belly (which is still on the menu) - it was stunning, and very melt-in-your-mouth (one of those 'ooooooooh' moments). We were part of a large table of diners, but the staff were as efficient as if we were a table of two. We had brought people who had never experienced D'arrys before, and they were absolutely stunned and impressed! It's that sort of place ;) There isn't a kids menu, but the staff will look after kids in a subtle and clever manner (I assume this is to discourage people thinking it's a 'family-friendly' restaurant - kids are OK if they are well behaved :P). Nothing is a hassle, staff know a lot about the menu items and wine (of course, D'Arenberg wine is the best!), and they are incredibly efficient and well-trained. Lots of desserts to choose from - their soft-centred chocolate pudding is another item that never leaves the menu. I tried the Salty Caramel Tapioca last time, which was to die for. Do I sound over-the-top gushy in this review? That's because I am ... and that's why I keep coming back, and recommending it to others! ;)

Perched on the side of a hill within the d'Arenberg wine estate, overlooking vineyards of Maclaren Vale, is d'Arry's Verandah Restaurant. The restaurant dining room, which shares the building with the estate's cellar door, is cosy and unpretentious, windows run the length of one side expose diners to the picturesque views of the vale, yielding a sense of place and season. The menu, which showcases seasonal and local produce, and off course, complimenting the very fine d'Arenberg wines, are thoughtfully put together by Head Chef Peter Reschke. Entrees range from $23 to $28, Mains from $33 to $38, and Desserts from $17 to $25. The selection of wines and beverages is extensive and generous, not limited to just what is produced on the estate or the country. The Lobster Medallion with Blue Swimmer Crab & Prawn Raviolli & Lobster Bisque deserves special mention. It is the house-speciality, a regular item on the menu and a veritable institution within the Adelaide fine-dining scene. The service is attentive but not overbearing, friendly without being over-familiar.  It is easy to understand how this restaurant has come to accumulate the many awards and accolades it has over the years. In the 4 years we have been coming, to celebrate special occasions and share special friendships, we have always enjoyed the excellent food and superb service, and not once have we been disappointed. It is, in our opinion, one of the cornerstones of the Adelaide fine-dining scene and an exemplary proponent of Modern Australian cuisine.

I have been to Woodstock on several occasions and the most recent was for the wedding of two very good friends. I have spent a great deal of my professional life organising functions - weddings being the most high pressure of these events (even the meekest girl has the ability to turn into a raging bridezilla) and I was absolutely floored with the organisation, affability and professionalism of Zak the restaurant manager and the woodstock crew. We had an alternate drop menu, chosen by the bride and groom. Every dish was delicious and maintained a very good standard (not quite as good as their unique, rustic a la carte menu, but it's impossible to acheive the same level of finish en masse). The restaurant at woodstock is called Coterie and is in the unique semi circular building where the reception was held. The space features an open fire in the middle of the inner wall. On Friday evenings they do a pizza night, nom, nom, sundays they have live jazz and there are Llamas over the back fence! Great novelty factor. I would not hesitate to recommend woodstock as a must-do Mclaren Vale destination. If you're into rose - the Grenache rose is one of the best Reds - The stocks Shiraz is a boys fave my pick may be the Octogenarian, grenache tempranillo

If you catch it in the warmer months be sure to sit under the pergola looking out onto the vineyards, lime groves and herb and veggie garden- it will take your breath away. My partner and I indulged in the autumn tasting menu and we were not disappointed. If we weren't working that afternoon we would have opted for the pairing with wine option- their wine list is equally as good as the food menu. Our favourite dishes were the lemon tart with torched meringue, the pumpernickel, beetroot, malt and goats curd and the sliced South Australian Kangaroo in native pepper with a blackberry reduction and hazelnut. Honestly though, out of 8 courses we did not dislike one thing. It's been a long time since we have enjoyed a meal and service so thoroughly at a restaurant so we will be back! It is a little on the pricer side but with the quality of the food and service it's worth every cent!

To my knowledge I am the first of my friends to visit, and boy am I glad I did! The restaurant is located - as the name indicates in an old drying shed, surrounded by a tahitian lime orchard. The table settings and chairs are relaxed and comfortable with just the right amount of finish - they really make you want to settle in for the afternoon which is what I suggest you do. The food is local produce of a superior standard and the dishes are imaginative and fresh, providing excellent value. Entrees range between $15 and $18, mains $28 to $35 and desserts are $15. I would suggest you tackle all 3 courses, but unless you are a really big eater you may just explode, so probably safer to plan on 2! And we traveled so far to get there. This would be the managers faults since he said "...the best I can do for you". And the manage Derrick asked if I wanted to tip when I was paying (Embarrassing for the restaurant that they have to ask); I felt we deserved better than that. For those that doesn't know the Aussie culture, we do not tip in Australia as locals. The minimum wages starts off really high, whereas, the wages as a wait staff in USA is low therefore we tip if the service was excellent. I've been around Australia since Feb 2014 so I KNOW this. Excellent service deserves a tip. A tip is NOT earned by asking for it..... ANYWHERE in the world. The service and food was excellent. Unfortunately, and perhaps this was partly due to the raving reviews and reputation of the restaurant I had grown to understand, my experience here fell short of my expectations. The food was for the most part delicious however the menu itself is very standard traditional fine dining. Signature steak and red meat for the most part with a few fish dishes and even less vegetarian options. We ordered the house made gnocchi for entree. Unfortunately it lacked the melt in your mouth aspect I was expecting from freshly made gnocchi. For mains we ordered the wagyu corned beef brisket which was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection. It was fairly salty though and had a rich sauce. The Lamb rump shoulder unfortunately was a bit on the over-well-done side. Sides ordered were the Korean fried Broccoli and sweet potato. We loved both dishes although everything was deep fried and it became a bit much. It would have been nice to accompany our rich mains with sides that were fresh to break it up. For dessert we chose the popular Chocolate Melange for two - the signature board of mini desserts. This was amazing. Word of warning, we were in struggle town by this point - but you are able to opt to take away what you can't finish. Good service is extremely important to me, and this was the down side. For an expensive fine dining restaurant with so many staff, our wait times were terrible. We were not checked upon and particularly between dinner and dessert, we waited almost an hour. It took a few reminders for our dessert to finally come. And after eventually giving up and asking for the bill, it came. Our waitress offered another round of drinks on the house but by that point we were bursting from eating so much that we couldn't possibly fit anything else in. It would have been appreciated if we were offered the dessert on the house instead and we were extremely dissatisfied with their failure to compensate for their overlook in service. Overall the food was enjoyable but it wasn't the best and I've enjoyed better food at more reasonable prices elsewhere. For the steep outlay and reputation they pride themselves on I expected a much higher level of service and taste across the board.

Going through the flight you will have a range of options to suit your palate. After trying them all I would have to say my favourites being the Chardonnay and Skeleton Key Shiraz. The Chardonnay here is called the Minimalist and is true to it's name. It is lighter than most, with a light peach fruit flavour. It does not have the heavy oak flavour that the old varieties have which is great. The Skeleton Key Shiraz is bold, but it has a spiced slightly sweet berry flavour through the wine. Perfect for winter! Pop Penny's Hill on your list of wineries to visit next time you are in McLaren Vale. You will not be disappointed.
