Stopped in at The Holdy for a lunch with the family and extended family. Made a booking for noon because of our party size. Service was excellent and friendly. Drinks were ordered from the bar while we waiting on everyone to arrive, and then the food orders were placed. I went with the chicken schnitzel, which was about the size of a football. Possibly the worst dining experience we have ever had (and we have had some doozys). Food/wait staff/atmosphere all terrible. Overpriced. Massive wine list if that interests you. Came for a birthday celebration. We had tried to call earlier in the day as we had 3 celiacs in the party. The place smelt like chlorine and vanilla/biscotti air freshener. Staff/food. one good staff member, a young man who ran between the bar and helping with food stuff. The rest were literally the most useless staff we have ever dealt with (even the floor manager was crap and avoidant). Just useless and frankly rubbish is the best way to describe them. Our female server had no idea what she was doing and didn't understand that serious food allergies can land people in hospital. We had two celiacs and one person with various allergies. Trying to order from this girl was like squeezing blood from a stone. She had no desire to offer any help or walk 2 meters to the kitchen behind us to ask questions. We had to get her to write the allergies down. Then we get our meals and our meals have literally the stuff we can't have in them. Hint: When someone has a food allergy of onion, don't put onion on their salad, when someone is a vegetarian, don't put a giant slab of grey soggy meat on their plate. We had to send the meal back 3 times before they realised that Spanish onion was ONION' and even then there must have been residue or something in the salad dressing because afterwards we felt so incredibly sick. The two celiacs both got poisoned by something in their meal even through we triple checked the wait staff and kitchen knew the allergies. The other food? The rest of the tables food was bland and overpriced. The pavlova came with half a strawberry diced up so small you could suck it through a straw. Atmosphere. When we walked in no one offered to help us or seat us. The place stunk like chlorine and air freshener (biscotti scented?). We also had a mild anaphylactic reaction to something in the restaurant as our throats started tickling before we had even ordered and by the time our meals came out we had headaches, a dizzy feeling and our throats were swollen. Truly a horrible experience with the most rubbish, disgusting, overpriced food, the most useless staff imaginable and a gross atmosphere of potentially leaking gas that meant us leaving felt incredible for the first time that night with the fresh air. read more

I've probably been here before years ago back in my university days, but it would have only been once or twice (or maybe just the bottle shop), so I can't remember what it was like all that long ago. However on New Years Eve I met up with a friend and decided to check this place out again. Well, it certainly has changed with the times. The front bar seemed closed, however they had expanded out the back to create a really cool restaurant, and they had a pretty large beer garden as well. However there wasn't much in the way of decent beers on tap. Still, I did quite like the place and would come back here again, even if only to experience the beer garden. read more

Drove 20mins to visit this hotel, ordered two schnitzels both very undercooked, very mushy I wouldn't give them to my dog. Very disappointed, would not recommend however they did refund one of the schnitzels that wasn't eaten. Hopefully I don't have to take my mans to the hospital tomorrow for food poisoning!!! read more

I came here as part of an after-work dinner, since it is within walking distance ... and I wasn't expecting much after reading the reviews here! But I must say, I was pleasantly surprised! I've heard a rumour that The Holdy is under completely new management, so that may account for the review differences ;) The beer garden here is very nice, and the dining area is lovely and large. The wine menu by the glass wasn't as extensive as I was expecting, but what was on offer was good quality (NZ sav blanc, for example). Staff here are very polite and professional (even though they hadn't noted our booking for 10, it wasn't very busy so they quickly made up a table for us). There is a very extensive menu (some may say *too* extensive, but I think the more choice the better!), and the kids menu is great too. Meals came out very quickly, and were of a high quality. I would have given my dining experience 5 stars, but the salt and pepper squid I ordered was WAY too salty (and I really love my salt, so for me to find something too salty is unusual!!), but my partner's pan-fried gnocchi was amazing, and everyone else's meals looked delicious too. I would definitely have dinner here again, and everyone at my table was equally impressed, and talking about the next time we visit. They can change the layout and theme as much as they want but the food will always be average. Been let down here so many times and the only reason we keep coming back is due to friends or family organising the catch ups here due to mutual location. Decent enough of a place to come for a drink,but I would never order anything again off the menu, been let down too many times. Our latest Christmas get together our table of 12 has 2 satisfied diners an the others who didn't finish there meal and that's just not a good enough strike rate for the price tag you pay here. read more

Tip 2 - Hold onto your tongue, coz you'll be tempted to abuse any and all employees for their terrible service. Tip 3 - Hold onto your vomit. If you're one of the Wed night regulars you're probably just out of high school or starting uni and you just can't handle those dirt cheap drink specials all freakin night get it. Popped into the Holdy on a Sunday afternoon to catch up with girlfriends. Love the new look! The front bar and beer garden has been revamped looking a lot more modern, trendy and fresh. The front bar has an exposed brick backdrop showcasing their top shelf products. I didn't order any food however, the GF's ordered some Vietnamese baos who loved the flavour and mentioned how delicious they were! Pleasantly surprising coming from a pub and not a local Vietnamese eatery. The bar staff were friendly and attentive and after waiting in a busy period, I got nothing but apologies from the staff on the wait. Good to know they value their customers! I have been here a few times and have never really had any complaints. They promote a lot of local bands and have live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. If you like going to see bands, this is a great place to kick back and see what's happening in the Adelaide music scene. We weren't there for music today though. In fact we had very limited time and were just stopping in for a super quick lunch. I didn't even order any wine! It felt different this time, as I walked into the modern looking dining area. I'm not sure if they've been renovating over the last few years but I noticed a bit of a nautical theme with ropes hanging from the ceiling. I liked it. The dining room is big and airy and there were already lots of people sitting around having some lunch. We were brought over some menus and it wasn't a bad selection, hubby and I just didn't really know what we wanted and felt under pressure knowing we were pushing time. I decided to order the 200g Porterhouse with fries and salad, and hubby went for the Triple Cheese and Bacon Burger. We saw some meals coming out and they looked pretty good!! Well presented and beautifully large serves. One of the meals coming out was the burger hubby had also ordered and I hoped his was going to be as big as the one I saw because it was pretty impressive! We didn't order any sides or starters, just went straight for a main. Hubby's burger looked pretty good when it came out I thought. That patty was pretty huge and there was quite a bit of bacon. To me, it didn't seem like the bacon had been cooked enough though. When I asked hubby what he thought of it he said it was ok, it just didn't have any pizzaz. The bun was a brioche bun and the doughy part was almost a yellow colour. He said there wasn't much flavour or spice in the burger and it didn't have any interesting sauces on it either. Although he didn't hate it, it was not memorable. At $19 this burger is reasonably priced so I guess you couldn't have expected too much more. My porterhouse looked ok when it came out too but I kept wishing I'd ordered something else. The meat itself tasted ok. There was quite a bit of fat around it and it seemed pretty small but maybe that is what a 200g steak is supposed to look like. The fries look way better in this picture than they did as I was eating them. They were clumped and cooked together. I'm sure they were cooked twice. They just seemed greased out. The ones on hubby's plate were in the same condition. The salad was ok and fairly fresh. I wasn't a fan of the dressing but I still ate it all and that's just down to personal preference. My steak was $23.50 so I guess that's a pretty reasonable price too. We really didn't hate it here so I hope my words aren't going to be taken out of context. The restaurant is really comfortable to sit in and the staff are super friendly. The food came out quickly and there are a lot of people going in and out. It feels like it's a "happy" place to be in. I think we were just too rushed and couldn't enjoy the experience as we normally would. I might just have to come back here on another night! read more

I have only been to the Holdy once, but after reading Michelle's review, must need to go a lot more because it really didn't seem as bad as she made it out to be.... I have only ever been there for dinner so therefore cannot comment on the nightlife aspect so will let you make up your own mind! First of all, there was a massive confusion with our booking because although my boyfriend and I arrived first, neither of us made the booking but offered every possible name combination it could be to be told there was no booking under any of those names. Of course, when the girl who made the booking rocked up it was all rectified, but we were made to feel a little stupid. Secondly, the food was a little pricey but when it came out the portion sizes were pretty big. The boys both had huge pieces of meat which looked amazing and at around $30, I guess you would expect to pay that anyway. The waitress was also pretty knowledgeable about the menu and answered some questions when I asked. I like the modern décor and the leather bench seating along one side, I love all booth and half-booth type seating arrangements! read more

I've eaten here a few times, and while it's not a place I go out of my way to race to for dinner or a night out, I can't really complain about my experience here. The food was pretty alright, I'm not going to rave about it, but it was good. A bit on the exxy side maybe, but as Sarah says, the serving sizes were quite big. We enjoy coming here for lunch with the family. Staff are friendly and they have a great kids meal option. The food is we have had is nice, I think there needs to be a few more options but they seem to serve a lot of thai style options.. The fish tacos are fun, but they charge per taco and they are quite small.. so think you should get 2 for the price. Pizzas are great to share,and the schnitzel is huge. We had a meal at the holdy tonight with a toddler in tow. The staff were incredible, bringing out the kids meal super quickly and the other meals weren't far behind. Very obliging staff, and lovely well priced meals. read more

Pretty decent feed and a good venue all round. Top beer garden as well. Not as busy as it should be which kills the vibe a bit.
