Simply a wonderful toy store for camera buffs! We spent over two hours looking at cameras and lens. The staff are very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. They did not push for a sale, but rather waited patiently for us to make up our minds, answering a myriad of questions before we settled on our purchase. Sam made a nice sale for the day, and we are very pleased with our Canon camera and lens. The big plus; Sam recommended Scotty's Table, a delicious place for lunch after our long morning of camera buying, and gave us two hours of complimentary parking in the garage across the street so we could linger over lunch. While we are only visiting Montana for a few short weeks, patronizing local businesses is our preferred shopping experience. I took a 60s-era Canon in because it's ...well, broken. So he says there's a $65 charge if the repairman can fix it. If not, no charge. If I won't be back to get it soon (3 hours away), they will ship it to me for a small charge. Some sweet looking cameras for sale... I wish I could buy! Especially since the sign on the door was advertising a "Staying in Business" sale and there was a sweet Yashica for $85. I bought a roll of 800 sp Fuji Superia film that seemed a little expensive at $7+ a roll, but I understand he's a small business, not buying in the quantities of amazon or wal-mart. UPDATE: The shop called to say my camera was ready and I asked them to ship it to me, which they did for $10 (very reasonable), and I ended up getting it the very next day. And my camera works perfectly now! read more

I always go here for my camera, film and processing needs. They have fixed several cameras for my wife and I. Well knowledged and very, very helpful. They offer camera repair as well as darkroom classes, who does that any more? Michael and his employees are a dying breed besieged by box stores and online ordering. They are helpful, friendly and genuinely care about film. When you go here they spend one on one time with you , in a no pressure sales environment. A breath of fresh air, the true meaning of "buy local". I highly recommend doing business With these guys!!! P.S. In case you were wondering, because you haven't been downtown in awhile, they are still in the same building, they just moved down stairs. The new entrance is 109 W. My camera lens stopped working on my way to scenic and photo worthy Glacier and was a bit desperate. I got a recommendation from someone in town and called to confirm they had a lens that work, and as luck would have it they did, and for $40!!!! I ran into town, found the shop and got amazing service. He confirmed my lens was broken, got me my lens and I was on my way! Awesome service and bailed me out in a pinch! read more

After a trip to New York City, the memory card for my Canon Xti was corrupted. (Ironic choice of terms, eh? Luckily, the corruption did not include me.) I was devastated by the loss. In desperation, I brought the card to the Dark Room. The amazing crew was able to retrieve all of the images; hundreds, to be exact! Eight CDs later, I was able to enjoy amazing memories of my trip. The fee was less than $30.00. In this case, a little money did buy happiness! I'm a forever fan of this shop! read more

I took a lens in to be repaired. They said they could not repair it and told me they would send it to the factory to be repaired. They also told me that it would take about six weeks. After two months I called them and they said that it had been ready for for the past six weeks. They never called to advise me it was back. I asked for the paperwork from the factory and they refused, saying it had been filed away.I sispect that they fixed it in house and charged me the extra for the "factory service" The employee also had a very poor attitude. I would not recommend this business. read more

I don't know how it happened but when I got my lens out to take pictures when on vacation in Missoula, on our way to photograph wild life in Glacier National Park, I discovered my lens was broke! Panic set in and I thought I was going to have to buy another lens at the last minute if I could find one ($300 was not in the vacation budget for a new lens)! We found The Darkroom on line and decided to visit there the next morning. We met the owner at the door when he was unlocking for business that day. He looked at the lens and said he did not know much about fixing it but would try to help us out. The person who fixes things like this was not in. He took it apart the best he could and actually figured it out! Yea!!! I thought this was going to be really a costly repair but what he charged me was more than fair. Thank you for putting me back in business photographing wildlife. I would Highly recommend his services!!! read more
