Under two years ago (fall of 2024), we contacted three tree services companies to get quotes to top-off three arborvitae hedges and crown-reduce/windsail/shape two trees. We opted to split the work between two companies who replied. Davey Tree Expert is one of the two companies; they were hired to top-off three sizeable arborvitae hedges. I waited to write the review to see how the arborvitaes recover and regrow. The quoting and initial process was very smooth and professional. Their response is fast for both the initial meet-up and providing the quote. Everything was done on their iPad, and quotes sent soon after. While the work is relatively straightforward, these arborvitaes are quite large. We declined to keep any chips from the trimming, so they had a tree chipper, cleaned, and collected all the trimmings. Their agile and slim tree trimmer climbed inside some of the very old arborvitaes (one hedge is 30+ years old) and cut from the inside. 1.5 years after trimming, these hedges are still thriving and doing well. In particular, birds have returned to nest inside the 30+ years old hedge this spring like they have done so in the past. No issues from beginning to end. Mid project, supervisor halted work, asking us to create conditions beyond our control; he would not allow project completion. His mistake? He admitted that his initial assessment was not accurate, and he simply would not complete the work as agreed. Additionally, some work which had been completed did not meet proposal specification. Finally, a tool of the trade was left in our yard; We informed the supervisor who neither acknowledged the fact nor took any action to retrieve it. Now that tool is left to our inconvenience and cost. It needs transporting to the City Refuse Transfer Facility, costing us time and inconvenience. Altogether a horrible experience. One bright light was one tree cutter. Personable, communicative, and sympathetic to our plight at the injustice of his supervisor. Pricey compared to other professionals offering the same services. This current experience does not compare to the good experience we had in the past; this new supervisor 'managed' our project poorly and with demonstrable incompetence, unfairness, with poor communication to boot. I contracted with NW tree service for years, then they were bought out by Davey. Service has gone downhill since. Most recently they tired to nitpick every word on the contract and renege on work they have performed in the past. They charged a whole lot more and can't even do the work they have performed before without even more money. Horrible experience. Horrendous customer skills and no longer living up to contract. These folks are outstanding! I had to update my review. We doubled the amount of winter upkeep we had them do this year. They handled everything we asked them to do with excellence. Pruning palm trees, thinning bamboo, taking suckers off old fruit trees, shaping a mis-managed magnolia, taking out dead trees and roots, removing a pussy willow and treating the stump, and more. The Kent office is Worth every penny! Our arborist sales rep, John, spent over an hour and a half to talk about the work we needed done and then referred a crackerjack, very experienced and capable crew, Jake (11 years of experience as an arborist) and Cael (3 years of professional experience and a lifetime as a master gardener's son). They accommodated all our questions with excellent knowledge, pruned and stabilized mature fruit trees, reshaped trees that had grown awkwardly as undercover trees impacted by an unfriendly neighbor's old plum, babied our beautiful maples, opened tree canopies to the light, and even persuaded the neighbor to allow them to remove overhanging branches at the points healthiest for the life of that old tree. Cleanup was exceptional, some of the best we've seen in 25 years. We couldn't be happier with their care and excellent communication. Nope. I've used them in the past and THIS year but they did a horrible job. I have so many grubs all over and I live in a VERY nice neighborhood. They also were not all that effective in fighting weeds...they appeared all summer. I had 5 apps in the package and I'd say the only one that "worked" was in June. The rest were a waste of money. BTW: I was 2 days late in the early spring to secure a discount for treatment. The person in the office said "I'm sorry," but this was further evidence that it's a company that doesn't care. I mean, c'mon: 48 hours for a customer. Also, I have NEVER EVER EVER gotten a live operator at their number in "North America." They always say to "leave a message." Davey's tree service did an excellent job on trimming up our large cedar trees and also topping off our hedge. Landscapers had previously trimmed the trees and did not do a good job. Davey's knew how to make them healthy again and look wonderful. read more

I called Davey tree to come look at a 20 year old fir tree in my front yard that was losing the tips. They came out a couple days later and said it is a rare condition but nothing to worry about. They said because of last years hot summer most likely it was stressed but otherwise healthy. They treated it with a deep fertilization and it is doing much better! They were friendly, helpful, responsive and showed up on time. I'm a picky gardener and I'm happy with their service and I recommend. read more

Davey Tree crew has been here all day thinning out my 9 very overgrown front yard trees. We were getting no sunlight in our yard and our grass was dying. They very carefully and thoughtfully thinned out the trees, did some reshaping where necessary, and made everything look better with lots more light. The new saws are so quiet. I hardly heard any of the usual tree-trimming noise today. I do not speak Spanish so I was very grateful that the head man, Steve, spoke perfect English. Very important when trying to explain detailed requests. He was very knowledgeable. They were very efficient and did a thorough cleanup. Could not be more pleased. I had high hopes for Davey. However, after paying $1500 to have them do our front yard weeding, laying down mulch, bush trimming and tree trimming, the weeds came back through the mulch after 1 week. When I finally got back a hold of Davey about coming back to ensure the weeding was redone, after I had left 2 phone messages and an email, I was told that it wasn't their practice to kill the weeds, rather they just pull them and put mulch on top and thus that would require another set of laborers and thus they would not be able to come back out to redo this work without being charged again. Davey tree company was cutting down my neighbor's large cottonwood tree. They came into my yard, broke my fence, cut down two small trees, threw the trampoline, and left the gate open so my dogs escaped into the neighborhood. When I called to complain, they denied they were ever in my yard (I watched them tromp about in my yard for hours), lied about cutting my trees and then hung up on me and refused to rectify the situation. I don't write reviews often, but this company and their crew are remarkable. We were devastated to wake up and find our beautiful Japanese Silk Tree cracked down the center from the weight of our Feb 2019 snow storm. We have watched for over 20 years as this tree grew to it's amazing height and beauty, with an aroma that had people stop to just smell the sweetness of it's blossoms. At about 25' tall we couldn't get at the top to remove the heavy snow. I used Yelp to find (hopefully) the best arborist and found Davey Tree, who came just a few days from our first call. We got a quote with a different company, accepted it, and then learned that the company had been purchased by Davey Tree. From that point on, any inquiry to the original company was met with bafflement, and we had to deal directly with Davey Tree. The job got done and we were able to move on with our lives. There were definitely some bumps along the way, though. First, we had trouble getting anyone to tell us the time to expect the crew. When the crew arrived, they hadn't heard that we wanted to keep all the wood as chips. The crew was very professional and we were able to clear that up before they started work. Afterwards, we asked when to expect the stump to be removed. We were told to wait a week. A week later, I asked, seriously, when? We were told it would be almost a week more since our job had gotten lost in the shuffle. The final straw was when we had another company out to plant a tree in the same spot. We told Davey Tree this was our plan, and yet when the tree planting company arrived we found out that Davey had only ground the stump down 18 inches. 18 inches! Unless we were just planting a sapling, that was never going to fit the bill. The company planting the tree stepped up and removed the rest of the stump. Ridiculous when I had already paid extra to Davey Tree for the same service. Davey Tree said they would "see what they could do" to give us a discount because the stump was removed so poorly. When the bill arrived, they asked for the full amount. I paid it and will not do business with them again. read more
